âDid you ever wish that you could fly? I keep hoping that if I make her really proud, Ma will teach me how.â

âYou think?â Usually that seemed to be the sort of thing people knew the answer to! Then again, Eithne hadnât known that she had any half-siblings until just a year ago, so it wasnât that far-fetched. âWell if youâre not one of my brothers then how did you learn to speak to them?â she asked, gesturing at the crowd of birds gathered around them. âMe, I just sortâve⌠started to hear them, one day.â
Crow did not answer the first question unsure how to explain his circumstances properly without causing the women to scream and run. Â He rubbed the back of his neck and his weight shifted from one foot to the other nervously.Â
â I just always could⌠its not as complex as human languages, but still.â
For what itâs worth, sheâs taking the whole âstrange boy wrapped in bandagesâ thing rather well. âSâfunny how things like that work,â she mused, tossing another scrap to the birds. âI wonder why some people can hear âem and some canât?â They couldnât ALL have a parent in common!

âYeah, you,â she nodded at him, waiting patiently for Crow to skulk a bit closer.
Eithne just shrugged philosophically at his quiet cynicism. Crows gonna crow, after all. He might be right. The unfamiliar raven hopped up onto her shoulder, the better to dip its beak into the paper bag and steal a giblet before flying away with its prize. âWhen I asked if they knew anybody else who could talk to them they said you were here. Theyâre happy about it,â she explained to him, holding out another scrap for a bird to take from her fingers. âDunno if itâs about food or company, though. Wanna feed them with me, and weâll say itâs both?â Eithne offered, jiggling the little paper sack at Crow.
Crow nodded quickly while rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. â WaitâŚyou speak to them?â Most people did not know how to communicate with them. The only reason he could was because he was born that way. She appeared normal thoughâŚso how?  His blue eye glanced to his friends for a few moments before the stranger and spoke. â Iâll just watch.âÂ
Eithne glanced over at him again, sticky fingers rustling inside the bag. âYeah. I always hoped Iâd meet someone else who can. They might be related to me.â It seemed like simple logic to her! âIâm Enya,â she introduced herself, and tossed another piece of meat to the cackling birds. âWhoâre you?â
Crow had his doubts that things worked that way, if it wasâŚwell people would be more uglier.  His personal thoughts were put on hold when she asked him a question.  â umâŚugh well⌠I donât really have a name⌠people just call me CrowâŚâ He was infamous for his murder of crows that trailed him around the city.
No last name or anything? Then again, he didnât seem like a normal sort of person. âNice to meet you then, Crow,â she smiled at him. âThis is the first time Iâve asked that any crows have known someone else that could speak their language. I donât suppose youâre one of my brothers, are you?âÂ

There was a girl in the park, feeding the birds. This would be a normal, wholesome scene if not for the following details:
1. The girl was feeding the crows. 2. The paper bag she was feeding them from squished and bled a bit.
Eithne tossed another chicken heart to the group of crows surrounding her, smiling as they squabbled over it before some lucky bird flew off with the choice morsel.
<All right you lot, I said no fighting!> she laughed. <I brought more than enough for everyone to share.>
Crow  was in the park for his own reasons as people were wasteful and much easier to find half eaten sandwiches or other things.  Though today was not his day, it was garbage day yesterday and the trash cans bared nothing of use to him. Though it was interesting to see a girl feeding crows, but he kept his distance as he was aware how being covered in bandages and dirt was unsettling. At least his friends were being treated well. He recognized them as individuals rather than a species.
For a little while, she seemed happy enough just to sit there and toss meat scraps to them, chatting away. It wasnât until a new, unfamiliar raven landed on the back of the bench and screeched at her. Eithne stopped to listen to it, asking it a question perhaps... and turned to look directly at the strange boy, squinting slightly at him. âHey!â she called across the park to him. âYour friends are happy to see you.â

âłâOPEN. â
â lizzie borden took an AXE, anâ gave her mother FORTY whacks. anâ yâknow what she did when she was DONE? â
âShe gave her mother forty-one! âŚDid you ever wonder if it were true, though?â
âHappy birthday to me, happy birthday to me~â
She sang it quietly as she settled down on top of her sleeping bag, cross-legged in front of the tiny campfire sheâd coaxed to life from dry sticks and waxed cardboard. In her hands was a single-serving slice of cake in a plastic clamshell container, fresh from the grocery store three miles behind her. Her parents smiled at her from a photograph taken in the late â90s, propped up against her backpack where the wind couldnât blow it away.
Eithne had found a fairly nice little clearing some few hundred feet from the roadside, sheltered from view by trees far older than herself. It was going to be cold tonight, and she wanted them as protection from the wind.
The dog that had been following her for twenty miles sat patiently nearby, but the cats had been returned to their families - even the dead one, which sheâd left carefully wrapped in a shroud after taking away the gift that had made its broken body get up off the asphalt and follow her. The dog was dead too, but its fur was still soft and it didnât smell bad. It didnât have any memory of âfamilyâ to return to, so she supposed that meant it was hers until it wanted to be buried. It wouldnât rot as long as she kept it âaliveâ with her motherâs gifts, but it still existed in a twilight between alive and truly dead.
She ate her birthday cake with a plastic fork from the deli counter, then with her fingers, swiping every last smear of white icing from the plastic container. It would have been nice to have a birthday card or a present, she supposed, but it would be a waste of money. Oh well, she wasnât a child anymore! She didnât need things like that! She repeated that to herself over and over while packing up her trash and banking the fire, while zipping up her sleeping bag, while slowly falling asleep.
She was warm, her cheek pillowed on woolen skirts. Someone was carding their clawed fingers through her black hair; she could smell blood and gunpowder and the tang of wet iron. âHappy birthday, my Enya,â came her motherâs voice, a soft lilt that carried sweet death and the laughter of ravens beneath. âOf course I remembered you.â Still half-asleep, Eithne just burrowed closer to her motherâs warmth, fingers wrapped in the Morriganâs bloodstained dress.
I donât know how it happened (I blame GIS and Pinterest), but I finally managed to find a FC for Eithne! Her hairâs usually too long in the icons I have but Emily Rudd looks so much like her! And just in time for Eithneâs birthday tomorrow, too...
âI woke up in the morgue today.â
âThe man in charge got upset. âŚI think I partied too hard.â
âDid you ever figure out how you got there in the first place? Besides too much partying, I mean.â
Spooky things for a spooky girl.
