One thing that’s bothering me is that Silver told Madi about Thomas, and we have no idea if Flint gave the okay for that or not.
So your saying if it were reversed Flint told Thomas about Silver and Madi you would still mind? They have no secrets between the two and tell each other everything. That’s what you do in a relationship. We’ve all talked to our hubby’s about our friends. Why is it different now??
Telling your significant other about a friend and his wife is not the same as telling your significant other about your friend’s deepest secrets. That’s not Silver’s secret to tell.
After all the shit Flint pulled, dragging and forcing countless of people into his plans without ever telling them why, that is the least what an important and equal ally as Madi deserved. He knows her motive, why shouldn’t she know his? You want to go to war, a war your ally is taking an entire Maroon army into, but not tell her why? Seems a bit absurd to me. Think of all the mess that could have been prevented if Flint was actually consistent and honest with his allies. But alas, that would’ve probably caused the end of the allience, for if he had told he was only in it for vengeance and not the freedom of slaves, that would’ve not been taken so lightly (and that’s an understatement). So ofcourse Flint selfishly kept that to himself and let Silver and Madi believe what he wanted them to believe. Flint isn’t some innocent victim, he knows what he does and he has only proven that he doesn’t deserve the same trust and loyalty he has always demanded from “his subjects”, since he has betrayed so many of them so many times. What did he expect? That he could get away with this shit forever? He gets no sympathy from me.
Blacksailed I want you to think of it this way. Flint was a proud man. Miranda often talked about him feeling shame for loving Thomas. It’s taboo. Your post shames Flints love. That it is not equal to other loves that society defines as “normal.” When you say did he ask permission it’s as though his sexuality is something he should be ashamed of. One he must hide. You stamped it with prejudice because of their gender. Madi and Silver are in a relationship, man and woman. They love each other. Look at Thomas and Flint relationship in the same manner, man and man. They love each other. Without stigma. It is a relationship as all others. Love is love.
Yes, Madi had a right to know Flint’s motivations. Silver, however, did not have a right to tell them to her. Maybe something happened off screen where she asked Flint and he told her to ask Silver. We don’t know, which is what was sitting uneasily with me.
Yes, Thomas and Flint’s relationship is equal to Madi and Silver’s, regardless of gender. My post doesn’t shame or prejudice Flint’s love or their relationship. Society already did that. Flint knew he had to hide that part of himself if he wanted to stay alive to wage war with all of England for what they did to him, Thomas, and Miranda.
Who he chose to tell or not tell was his right. Outing someone is never okay.

look at the meta here. Steve gives up the helmet, the mask, when it’s not a symbol of do-good patriotism anymore. He simply becomes Steve Rogers. The symbol of Captain America devalues when people don’t believe him as the ideal, but Steve Rogers remains the same. Not even the symbol is immortal. It’s not the symbol that defines the man, it’s the man who defines the symbol.
Let’s go.
series 1 flint is my fave aesthetically but series 4 flint is my fave emotionally but series 2-3 flint is also my fave and james mcgraw is my ultra fave but basically i just love james flint
black sails rewatch - XXVI.
My father was a tailor in Leeds. As was his father and his father’s father. Time was if a man on the Avondale Road asked where he might find the finest clothes in northern England, he was pointed toward the shop of a man named Rackham. Then the men who sell wool decide they’d prefer not to compete with the men who imported fine cotton. And as the men who sell wool have the ears of the men who make laws, an embargo is enacted to increase profits and calico disappears. And my father’s business that he inherited from his father and his father’s father begins to wither and die. And my father suffers the compound shame of financial failure seen through the eyes of his son and descended into drink. I’d sit beside him as a boy at the Sunday service as he shouted at the pastor, at the altar– at anyone who’d listen, really– at the injustice of it all. And I’d put my arm over his shoulder as the insults began, help carry him out of the church. God, the insults. At his funeral, our neighbors were kind enough to whisper them rather than call them out loud. So, I set to work, determined to rebuild what had been taken away. I was 13 years old. but I was determined… until a man arrived at my door claiming to hold debts belonging to my father. Debts accumulated as my father drank. Debts he claimed that now belonged to me. Debts I could not possibly have hoped to repay. Debts over which this man would have seen me imprisoned– imprisoned in a place where the debts would have been discharged only through hard labor. Hard labor with no wages, working at –wait for it– the production of textiles.

are you ever in the middle of saying something or showing someone something and you realize that literally no one cares
A story is true, a story is untrue. As time extends, it matters less and less. The stories we want to believe, those are the ones that survive.
The writers gave us this quote as the same time as an “open ending.” Combined with the themes of this show I choose to believe that what’s important is not the story they tell, but the story we remember. The story we believe. And they gave us other themes, too - themes of love, of representation of marginalised characters, and an ending for several of them that was unambiguously happy. This quote, and the entire show, is also clearly a criticism on a bigoted civilisation: civilisation wants to believe that pirates are monsters, that people who are different are monsters, and that’s why those versions of their stories survive. Black Sails is such a meta show, so aware of the contemporary issues it addresses. Out of the two “options” - the one where marginalised characters who have suffered too much finally get a shot at happiness and love and are portrayed, through this love, as human and not as monsters, and the one where those same marginalised characters, treated as monsters by both historical and contemporary civilisations simply because they are different, are punished for their differences with meaningless death, - the one we believe says more about us than it does about the story itself. Civilisation tells the story that serves its narratives, its values. Which version we believe, which version we tell, says a lot about our values - and helps us spread those, against the grain of pessimism and bigotry. Considering the themes of the show,I am pretty sure I know which version would align us with the message the writers have been trying to send. And even if I’m wrong - considering the state of the world right now, where stories about people who are different have the biggest chance they’ve ever had to not be deformed into monstrosity by a bigoted majority, it does not matter what story the writers have been trying to tell. It matters which one we tell. I know which one I believe. I know which one I want to make sure will be remembered. I know which one I want to make sure survives. And like the quote above says - the story that survives, ultimately becomes true. Let’s make it the hopeful one, shall we? (via bisexualcyborg)

I need the creators of black sails to know how much the show means to me, how much thomas hamilton and james mcgraw/flint’s relationship means to me and how much it means to me that after everything they got their happy ending
I need them to know how much it means to me to see a same sex relationship being the reason for this entire show, that the love one man had for another changed the course of history.
I need them to know how deeply moved I am by Thomas Hamilton, a thoroughly gay and good person, and how much I love them and the creators for writing him so lovingly and carefully. As a gay person, I need them to know that it means the absolute world to me.
