He was feeling the effects of the concussion and the whiskey and it was exhausting. His body felt like lead. If he pushed, he could move, but the notion of doing so was almost nauseating. He listened to McCree speak, trying to muddle what he was saying through the way his brain seemed to flicker in and out of real comprehension.
He mentioned the whiskey and Jack frowned behind the mask, brows furrowing. Perhaps if he had declined he could have gone with him- but potential friendly sabotage aside, he was in no condition to be running around, that was for certain.
He grunted, finally. He thought. And then he sighed.
âFine.â And then Jesse was⊠reminiscent and quiet and that part of him he wasnât sure he was comfortable with. He still talked more than enough for both of them, a trait Jack belatedly remembered Gabriel commiserating about in his younger days- perhaps Jesse handled silences well but he did fill them when he felt it. It was when he was quieter, thoughtful, that Jack found concerning.
He was talking about him. A version of himself dead and gone and buried in ceremony in Virginia. He sank into the chair, staring ahead. A good man. It was hard to believe some still thought of him as such. So many months before the explosion he remembered only vitriol spewed at his person. Public outrage any time some bullshit was brought up about him. Every aspect of his life questioned, every movement scrutinized. It drowned out the positivity. Ana had disappeared, Gabriel rarely talked to him except to argue, and everyone else stepped back to steer clear of his and Reyesâ conflicts.
Heâd felt alone- cut off in the ivory tower of headquarters trying to solve things by himself. Sometimes he wondered if heâd gone mad in those days.
He finally grunts.
âSounds like an unfortunate man,â he murmurs. âIâll take you up on another whiskey. Should be outta your hair by the end of the night.â
âOh no yâdonât old geezer. Youâre stayinâ till you ainât gonna keel over. That being a till morning at least. Iâm tellinâ ya to rest while I go huntinâ down the last of the Talon bastards who came ruining my good mood. Youâre keepinâ your ass here. Got me old timer?â The younger joked as he pushed himself up and fixed the hat over his head again.
âIâll be back hopefully. But if I ainât that means mâdead or captured and if thatâs the case then you can get yourself out of here. Donât come thinkinâ âbout savinâ me. I ainât worth the shot.â Jesse muttered, picking up his holster from the table and strapping it back on, then checking out his Peacekeeper for the firefight he knew heâd be going in for.Â
âI saved your life Soldier. Donât screw it up by puttinâ yourself back in the fray before you even finished healing.â
With that he shoved his pistol into his holster and started moving for the door. âBeds in the back, whiskeyâs on the table for ya. Get some rest and if youâre feelinâ healthy enough, get out of town. Donât worry if you ainât seeinâ me again when you wake up.â The Cowboy opened the door to his little hideout and gave the elder man a small wave goodbye. âCatch ya âround partner.â Jess winked and left, shutting the door behind himself.Â

iâm trying to say that iâm glad youâre here.
A sentence starter meme that I deletedâŠwhoops!
âIâm glad youâre here too, McCree.â Pandering is not Morrisonâs style; the soldier means what he says. âI know Iâve let you down before, and I know I will again, so it means a lot to hear you say that. Just stay strong.â
âY-Yeah well...th-this time atleast it wasnât your fault.â Jesse joked as he held to the bullet wound hole against his side. He winced and lent against his Commanderâs side, smiling up to him with a dopey stupid smile of his he always wore.Â
âMâalways strong. Heh...ju-just I mean what I said...mâglad youâre here.â He whispered tiredly. âJust in case yâknow...I actually to bite the bullet. No pun intended. Dying alone ainât soundinâ like a fun time.â
Late night drawing đđŠ
"Eherm...h-how mad would you be with me if I told'ya I liked when y-you erm. Kissed me?"
76 canât help but make a rather blunt, basic answer. âNot that mad.â
To be fair, he wasnât mad, bitter, or filled with absolute disgust with himself having kissed an old recruit. If anythingâŠhe hadnât even seen Jesse as much of a recruit now. Having become his own man, a cowboy. No longer did he march under the wing of Reyes - he could now stand for himself.
âI ainât all that madâŠâ Thereâs a slight pause in his words, a smile tugging at his lips behind his visor. âMaybe a little.âÂ
The fact that heâd kissed the ex-Deadlock member was only an after thought, not exactly something he thought back on for an extended period of time.
He hadnât truly taken deep thought into the situationâŠMind far too busy constructing his next move against Talon.
Thereâs a faint lightheartedness in his voice, though it still retained itâs gruff toneâŠHe didnât sound as hateful, as mean.Â
For once.
For a man who always seemed so sure about himself he had never heard himself stutter so badly in his life. Fear had coated his every thought speaking what he wanted to say to the older man out loud but to hear that he wasnât angry or mad or anything really on those notions put so much relief in the poor cowboy that he honestly thought he was gonna drop in a keel.
Thankfully his heart was stronger than that and for once he stayed on his own two feet albeit in a small little daze.Â
âYâreally ainât mad....?â Jesse muttered back after a long pause of silence between them. Well Jack wasnât known for lying so he might as well actually be telling the truth here. âI-...eherm. Good. Good thatâs good I guess.â The brunette mumbled quietly.Â
âTâbe honest here I just-....ainât left my mind since itâs happen. I know. Weird. But still....ever since ya did it I canât help but-....but remember.â McCreeâs cheeks turned a gentle red and he averted his eyes sheepishly.Â
For the charmer of Overwatch he had never felt this feeling of shyness before. This was all new to him. Maybe it was because it was Jack...or maybe because this feeling he felt was far stronger than he had felt for any of the countless ladies he had gotten in touch with throughout the years.
Jesse reached up to feel over his lips, his eyes looking at something that wasnât there, far off and lost to the past. âAinât thâsame since. I-....I liked it a lot actually.â
âI um....so how mad would you be if I asked you tâdo it again?â
I heart him
step right up
"You can't shoulder this all by yourself." Jesse said quietly, staring at the holovid as the France Headquarters went up in flames. Another attack on Overwatch by Talon. Goddammit, when would this end....He sighed, staring at the blonde who had sunken into his office chair from the news. "Look. We can figure this out. Talon already claimed the attack. You let me go in You let me take them out. We can end this. You just gotta trust me Jack."
He just pinches the bridge of his nose- watching the news from underneath furrowed brows. A soft exhale blows across his desk, briefly fogging up the impact resistant glass.Â
âItâs not that I donât trust you, Jesse.â he begins- gravelly voice sinking deeper into another octave as the reports begin to come across his desk with alarming frequency and importance. Most of them are tagged as urgent.
âItâs that I donât want what happened to LaCroix to happen to you.â
âI ainât gonna get hurt Jack. Mânot stupid. I know what I can and canât do. Ainât no fire of revenge will blind me when I got somethinâ..someone tâcome back to.â Jesse murmured, putting his hand on the elder males shoulder and giving it a firm squeeze.Â
âIâll makeâem see hell with thâwrath of my gun for what they did. You can bet to damn sure I will...but I wonât lose my cool over it. I promise...Iâll be careful. Iâll be safe and Iâll be smart. Believe it or not it ainât all empty under my hat yâknow.â McCree teased, trying his best to at least crack a small smile off the blondes lips with his own derpy confident grin.
âYou wonât lose me Jackie...I promise.â

McCree had a lot to say. He wondered if Jesse handled the silence of working alone worse than he did. Jack managed it well- silence was a companion these days, a constant. Noise bothered him. Needless noise could mask the sounds he relied on, and other noises spelled more trouble. But here, he at least knew McCree speaking meant he was filling space. Maybe he was glad of someone to talk to. Jack shifted in his seat.
Heâd have excused himself if bloodloss and what he was now ascertaining was a concussion wasnât keeping him rooted. Last thing he needed was someone getting too comfortable around him. It made them fear him less.
But the revelation that his last sighting was still out in the deserts of Egypt was good. It meant his movements were difficult to track. Jesse wasnât an incompetent man, and he was smart enough to be wary of the violent stranger bleeding in his apartment.
âFar as I know,â he started, downing the last of the whiskey in the glass. âTheyâre after a few things I relieved them of.â Not to mention Talon did not intend to let the soldier out of their sights- that much Jack knew. Talon had kept tabs on him for a while now, and often either grunts or The Reaper himself would come down to try to end him. Each time, either skill or providence kept him free of their grasp.
âAnd theyâre trying to get a foothold in the area.â The initial reason Jack had come here. Talonâs fingers extended far and wide but there were many places Talon could not sink their⊠well, talons into. Here was one. But perhaps Jack was worth enough if they were able to tread here. âThereâs an abandoned warehouse east of here. Their cover is a steel manufacturing company buying the lot but itâs Talon.â
He was patched. He could deal with more whiskey, but he knew better than to intrude that much. But he wasnât bleeding. Heâd need time to recover his strength and hope the injury to his head settled itself.
âWell they ainât gettinâ shit done here so long as Iâm around. I donât like Talon beinâ close so you can bet your bottoms worth Iâll cleanâem out of town like a tornado in a trailer park.â Jesse said with a smirk and a wink to boot. Always the charmer this one. âDonât you worry none old timer. Leave thârest tâme. You on the other hand need ta rest. Ainât doing crap in your position whiskey and all.â
Jesse waved his hand lazily. âIâll go check out this factory tonight and scope it out, see what I can take out and what to bring back for you from in there. Trust me, give me a day and theyâll be runninâ with their tails between their legs~âÂ
With that and a nonchalant shrug, Jesse lent back and finger gunned at Jack. âStay here thânight. Lord knows iâm goinâ ta hell but it ainât for no sin on puttinâ old wounded folks out on the streets in the cold.â McCree joked. âIâll even give ya one more glass of whiskey. Just one though. Nâdonât ask why mâbeinâ so nice to ya. Ainât normally a man who likes guests but-...heh....but well...â The brunette looked away and rubbed sheepishly at the back of his neck.Â
â....You remind me of a good man I once knew. He was a real stick up thâass. Real boy scout. Heh, my old Commander use to actually call him that. But a good man all thâsame. Maybe itâs the hair.â Jesse gestured to the elder mans silver short locks and smiled fondly.Â
âMaybe you two wouldâve gotten along.âÂ
