1954 Birthday Book of Loucelia Chapter No. 38 Order of the Eastern Star

The Order of the Eastern Star is “a Masonic appendent body.” The Loucelia Chapter no. 38, founded in 1920, was(/is?) a historically Black chapter based in Philadelphia, PA. This is their “birthday book” for 1954 which lists the birthdays of all members!

The “birthday book” includes pictures and information about members who hold offices in the organization.

It also features advertisements from sponsors, like this one for “Grace’s Beauty Shop.”

Here’s an example of one of the birthday pages! Underneath the list of names is just half a page of blank lined paper. Maybe to write birthday messages? Or make notes about what presents to get for everyone? Oh, and happy birthday to Lucy, Laura, and Hortense!🎂

FORGOTTEN HISTORY: On March 5th, 1959, 69 African American boys, ages 13 to 17, including Lawrence’s 15-year-old brother Lindsey Cross, were padlocked into their dormitory for the night at the Negro Boys Industrial School in Wrightsville. Around 4 a.m., a fire “mysteriously” ignited, forcing the boys to fight and claw their way out of the burning building. It’s an event in history possibly forgotten or unknown by many, but it’s that moment that claimed the life of 21 boys. 🙏🏾🕊 #moorinfo
