overthinking should at least burn calories bc wtf
chrissy is a june baby and therefore a gemini, and if my calculations are correct that means she’d be the youngest/the last one to turn 18 in her class, making her being the shortest and the head cheerleader even funnier. as a gemini, she’s indecisive (hence why she lets her mother take control of her life for some time) but impulsive (hence why she decides to buy drugs once she starts getting visions), she’s outgoing (hence why she’s the most popular girl in hawkins) and adaptable (hence why she gets along with everyone and will have a conversation and be kind to anyone).
chrissy rushing home to tell eddie that a group of fireflies is called a sparkle ✨
All I dream of is a home where I am safe emotionally
sender picks up receiver on the side of the road after their car dies.
"Hey, Eddie! Wow, you really flew here. My brain was writing the plotline to a summer blockbuster horror, so I appreciate the hustle," she grinned, though her facial expression held an undertone of exhaustion. She was utterly drained. Sure, Chrissy could've called Jason, or even her parents, but the mental gymnastics it would take to interact with them left her calling Eddie instead. With him, she could remove the mask she held up for everyone else in her life. Her nervous system could rest, and after the night she'd had, this was a necessity.
"So, not to place all of my eggs in one basket, but do you think there's a way to fix it tomorrow so that I don't have to get it towed? I really don't want my parents to know. Somehow it'll end up being my fault," she muttered, blunt tone absent of any dramatic flair. Because this assumption wasn't too far-fetched. "If they would just get me a stupid computer I wouldn't have even had to drive to the library to work on my paper in the first place!" She crossed her arms, realizing she'd given Eddie little opportunity to respond as she provided stream of consciousness thoughts without restraint.
i just want to rest my head on someone and finally breathe
[ TXT ] : be honest. are you flirting with me or am i delusional?
Chrissy’s eyes flew wide, baby blues frantically dancing between excitement and horror as she read Eddie’s text. Chest fluttering as her heartbeat rattled against its cage, she anxiously mulled over her reply. Dumb, play dumb. But… she didn’t want to make Eddie feel bad if there was a reason he’d asked in the first place. Coy then. That was her default where he was concerned, anyway. They narrowly danced around the obvious, and it was a comfortable space. Thrilling, even.
[ TXT ] definitely delusional. That’s your sweet spot anyway, right? 😉
[ TXT ] what if I am?
He shouldn't have asked. He should have simply continued to dance the dance around whatever it was that was happening most nights when they fell into this habit of messaging back and forth into the small hours. He watches the screen anxiously, waiting for those three little dots to show any sign of response. He waits for what feels like forever, mentally cursing himself for letting his fingers bypass his brain. Then, it happens. The three little dots. Chrissy was responding. He takes a long drag from the cigarette he almost forgot was clapsed between his fingers, still the dots taunt him. Until.. DING!
[TXT] : clearly delusional, that's what I thought. At least I can rely on your total honesty to keep my deluded ass grounded
[TXT] : however if you were then, at the risk of sounding uncharacteristically dramatic, I would probably drop dead where I lay. But know that I would have died the happiest man on earth.
Chrissy’s giggle shattered the silence around her. She repositioned, reaching to press a lace-fringed pillow over her face until her laughter settled. She was already on thin ice with her mother, the frost queen. She couldn’t risk grounding. Especially with this unfolding turn of events.
Chrissy: Is it really so surprising that I might be flirting with you? Your reputation kind of led me to believe you were more confident in this area. I mean, you have that sexy, tall, dark and mysterious stranger thing down to an art.
Her fingers hovered over her keypad, wondering where this boldness was coming from. Perhaps she’d grown tired of self-restraint; of being entirely predictable. Her fingers reached to twirl around the dainty gold heart that hung from its chain around her neck. Pressing the back button, she began erasing her train wreck of a first draft. And still, she found herself saying something similar, but with calculated restraint.
Chrissy: Is it really so surprising I might be flirting with you? I thought it might be obvious by now. But… I don’t want you to die, so I wonder if I should’ve admitted that…
Chrissy: Come back to the light, Eddie! 🤣
The dots are taunting him again. She's writing something, then she's not. Obviously thinking about her reply. Then a whole lot of writing something, then nothing, then the dots begin their infuriating dance again. Eddie's cigarette is long gone, burned out and disposed of. He rolls himself a joint to keep his fingers busy, but he's not going to smoke it yet, he's going to need all his mental facilities present and correct for this conversation. He can't explain it, but Chrissy has the effect of making him inexplicably dumb. His usual charm abandoning him in favour of hurrrr, pretty. And that absolutely can't happen now. Plus, if by some miracle he does manage to score a date with the subject of his all consuming crush, he wants to be able to remember every moment of how it happened so one day he can recant the tale in typical Eddie dramatic fashion to their kids and grandkids.
Maybe we're getting a little ahead of ourselves my guy.
Eddie: yes! Absofuckinglutely it's hard to believe. The goddess in human form, who hung the stars in the sky, is acknowledging my existence
Woah, okay.. reign it in. Delete that, we're not trying to weird her out. Chill the fuck out Edward you fucking clown
Eddie: light? I didn't see any light. It did get kinda warm there for a second and I got the strongest smell of sulphur. This is gonna sound real fucking weird, but I could have sworn I heard people shouting "welcome home"
Eddie: I guess that means that you flirting with me isn't the weirdest thing to happen to me tonight
Chrissy repositioned, rolling onto her back as she once again stifled her giggles with the back of her arm. Eddie had this way of making her laugh; a genuine, needed-at-a-soul-level laugh. The kind beckoned from a comedy comfort movie you put on when the world was just too heavy. No one amused her like Eddie did. And no one made her heart feel like it was going to leap out of her chest and play hopscotch… except him.
Chrissy: Stop it! I know plenty of church goers who would see the same at the end of their life. And a heaven where you aren’t welcome sounds pretty lame if you ask me, anyway! :p
Chrissy’s eyes flitted around her room like powder blue butterflies, a wave of nervous shame flooding her body. The sensation mimicked adrenaline with an undertone of dread; like the moments when her mother scrutinized her body during summer break. Speaking against the church’s idea of heaven seemed like a one way ticket to her own bright light. But Chrissy felt such comfort in Eddie’s imperfections. He laid them bare, on full display, complete with the middle finger and a devilishly handsome smirk. Something about that felt safe. Calmer than any church she’d stepped foot into.
Chrissy: Eddie, can I ask you a question?
She, of course, didn’t wait for his response before she continued to type.
Chrissy: Why would it be so surprising for me to be flirting with you? For me to… like you?
Eddie: obviously it's gonna suck if I'm not there. My charming, gregarious nature improves any and all social situations
Did she just imply that eternity would suck the big one without him? Potentially??? But right now he's not in the right mindset for a theological discussion regarding their possible residences once they shuffle off this particular plane of existence. Not when his heart is in his mouth because Chrissy Cunningham freely admitted to flirting with him.
Another cigarette is what he needs. Times of high stress calls for chain smoking. He prepares to shift forwards on the couch to reach the not so long ago discarded pack and lighter, only to find that he's already perched on the edge of the couch, with zero recollection of having moved there.
The three dots are back to taunt him again, he studies each and every one of them, dancing their little dance as he lights up another cigarette.
A question? She wants to ask him a question. This question itself is rhetorical because she's not waiting for him to respond.
And in that moment he offers a little thank you to whichever deity is watching over his useless ass, grateful for the fact that they're not on any kind of video call because apparently the appropriate reaction to discovering that Chrissy Cunningham likes him is to make a screeching sound akin to a pterodactyl and to stand in the middle of the couch.
If anyone witnessed this, or the subsequent coughing fit which followed when he forgot how to smoke, or even breathe, his reputation would have been on fire in a dumpster within a fraction of a second.
Shit fuck shit fuck shit fuck shit fuck WHAT DO I SAY?????????
Eddie: many, many reasons. I'm sure all of which can and will be discussed at length once my ability to function returns from wherever the fuck it just went
He returns to sitting on the couch like a normal, reasonable excuse for a human being, taking a long drag from the cigarette clutched tightly between his fingers before continuing to tap away at the screen of his phone.
Eddie: reciprocal honesty time. There may be a rumour circulating within the inner sanctums of my friendship group that I have been harbouring something of an all consuming crush on you since eighth grade
Eddie: That rumour would be true
Forgetting her goal to remain carefully silent, Chrissy let out an involuntary "eeee!" so shrill she knew it would wake the dead. And once she came to from a short daydream of Eddie climbing through her bedroom window, anxiety and panic hijacked any previous celebrations.
Shoot shoot shoot shoot Chrissy muttered to herself as she shoved her cell phone under her pillow and brought the downy comforter up to her cheek, blushed a searing red from reading Eddie's confession. She listened for her mother's familiar footsteps shuffling across the hallway carpet runner. About the moment she realized she'd forgotten to turn off her beside lamp, Mrs. Cunningham opened the door. Chrissy sat up with a panic, before pulling her emotions back into a restraint of casual confusion. "Mom? Did I wake you?" she asked, offering an exaggerated yawn for extra flair. One of her curled bangs tumbled into her eyelashes, and she reached with a shaky hand to free their entanglement. Her mother's cold stare replicated a nightmare she'd had recently, and a chill rain down her spine. "Chrissy, why is your lamp on? And why did I hear you screaming?"
Chrissy forced a breathy laugh, shaking her head with steady embarrassment. "It was just a nightmare, mom. I turned on the lamp because I was too scared, but I was going to read my Bible and try to fall right back to sleep. I'm sorry I woke you," she answered, and nearly dry-heaved at her own deception. I'm sorry, God. But I can't let her ruin this too she prayed, while simultaneously hoping her mother bought the lie in the first place. Mrs. Cunningham's eyes narrowed toward Chrissy. Like a famished viper calculating the distance to its prey. "If you read your Bible more during the waking hours, maybe the devil wouldn't be visiting your dreams," she retorted, before telling Chrissy to turn off her lamp. "You'll wake an hour earlier and read in the morning. A fresh, rested brain is the least you can offer to your Lord and Savior, Chrissy. Now get to bed," she firmly ordered, waiting until Chrissy turned off her lamp and bid her goodnight before she finally shut the door.
She waited another five minutes to make sure her mother wasn't hovering outside the door. Heartbeat pounding, she checked the time stamp from Eddie's last text to the current time. Twenty minutes had passed! TWENTY! "FUCK," she groaned to herself, barely above a whisper yet still holding a spark of anger.
Her brain churned with silent apprehension, agonizing over her reply.
Chrissy: Eighth grade? Really? Why didn't you say anything? It's just... you really hid that well. I had no idea.
Chrissy: Eighth grade was the talent show, that's right! You were the first boy to ever really be nice to me. I'll never forget that. You taught me that looks can be deceiving. That sometimes...the one they tell you to look out for ends up being the only one who really sees you.
Chrissy paused, clearing her throat despite not speaking aloud. A wave of heated excitement prickled across her body, unsure if she should be this honest, but finding it impossible to stop now that she'd admitted her feelings for Eddie.
Chrissy: I'm not worthy of being anyone's four year crush, but I'm flattered. And it's nice to know I wasn't the only one who had one.... :)
Chrissy's body tensed as she hit send. And she waited. Praying Eddie hadn't fallen asleep, or worse, thought she'd rejected him and thrown his phone into Lover's Lake.
It was done, it was out there. The worst kept secret in the history of everything, now confessed and laid bare. Despite the deep seated anxiety of potential rejection, it felt good to finally say it.
But then there was nothing. Not even the three little dots to taunt him. Nothing. Radio silence.
Three minutes.. four.. five. The buzz of adrenaline is starting to wane, dread and regret creeping in to take its place. The ticking of the clock on the wall mocking him with each passing second. Lo-ser. Re-ject. Dumb-ass.
Nine.. ten.. eleven minutes. Still nothing.
He consoles himself with the thought that maybe Chrissy had fallen asleep. It was late after all. Maybe she's sleeping and will read his confession in the morning. But checking his phone again, there's no mistaking the two tick marks next to his message. Read.
"crash and burn Munson. Crash and fuckin' burn."
He tossed his phone aside and hauled himself up from the couch where he'd slumped gradually lower and lower during the passing minutes until he was the physical embodiment of the deflation he felt inside.
He made it half way to the door of his bedroom, joint and lighter in hand, before he turned back to grab his phone, shoving it into his pocket. Just in case.
Fifteen minutes. The joint was smoked and Eddie was crashed out on his bed, headphones on and the sound of Dio trying to drown out the harsh words of his inner monologue.
He doesn't know how long it's been now. He hasn't checked his phone since taking it from his pocket and discarding it somewhere on his bed. There had been a brief moment when he'd thought the weight in his chest was actually trying to crush him, however after cracking an eye open it was quickly determined that the crushing weight of rejection was in fact a large black cat by the name of Ronnie James Miow making Eddie's chest his chosen napping spot.
*DING!*
Eddie's eyes fly open. That sound means only one thing. Chrissy. Then begins the weird scramble to find his phone whilst trying not to disturb Ronnie. Fingertips found something phone-like in shape and size, and after a couple of failed attempts to grab and drag it within reach, it was in his possession again, and contrary to his worst fears, the reply wasn't one of rejection.
Eddie: hid it well?? Are you shitting me?? It was the worst kept secret in the history of Hawkins High! It was more obvious than Mr Bernard's wig!!
His hands trembled as he typed thanks to a second rush of adrenaline, the sudden uptick in movement prompted a disgruntled merp from Ronnie, who only doubled down on his intention to stay put by stretching and subsequently curling up into a tighter ball.
Eddie: I could Uno reverse that right back at you. The girl with the pigtails, pompoms and cute smile was the only one to cheer me on, even after they dragged my ass off stage
Eddie: she was waaaaaaay out of my league back then, and only grew more and more unobtainable. So I figured I'd settle for making you laugh with my court jester bullshit every lunchtime. (Don't try to deny laughing, I saw you) Pissing of *redacted* in the process was merely an added bonus
He hits send, perhaps feeling a little guilty for doubting Chrissy for even a second. Scrolling back up to re-read her message for the twentieth time something finally clicked.
She wasn't the only one..
She wasn't the only one..
Eddie: wait wait wait wait wait.. you.. four years?? And you never said anything? I had no idea!!! Holy shit!
Eddie: so what I'm hearing is, if I were to maybe ask you out there's a possibility that you could potentially say yes???
Chrissy: Maybe it was obvious to your friend group, but the people we hang out with don't exactly intermingle usually lol
Chrissy: That's also why it wasn't obvious. I figured if you had a crush on anyone, it certainly wasn't me. I always thought guys like you want girls with piercings and tattoos :p (I'm half joking, by the way.)
Chrissy: I cheered you on because I could tell you had real talent, Eddie. Your stage presence is like nothing I'd ever seen then, or...now. Just because no one understood it then doesn't mean it isn't there.
Chrissy: Plus you were my hero for sticking it to anyone that didn't get it. Including adults. I've been raised not to question authority so it's a lot harder for me. But seeing you, living day after day not giving a crap? It's inspiring. I don't know how you do it. I spend way too much of my energy caring what people think. It makes me miserable sometimes.
Chrissy paused, realizing she was getting into uncomfortably serious territory after Eddie dropped his bombshell confessional.
Chrissy: Four years. I mean, yes Jason is was my boyfriend because he's the safest option. He's also the closest to freedom that I can get. Since he's a parent's dream, I get to leave the house more than I ever could before. Even if they're just transferring me out of their custody into another's. It's not that I don't care for Jason. More that I cared for the version of him I thought he was.
Chrissy: And when you started giving him and his friends a hard time in the lunchroom, I was...impressed. No one really stands up to Jason. Not even me. But you do it without a second thought. I think that's one of the things I like most about you. Chrissy: I also didn't say anything because your reputation means that my mother will most likely never agree to meet you :(
Chrissy: There's potential. -pause- Chrissy: Yes.
[ TXT ] : [ IMAGE DELIVERED ] you left this behind 😅
[TXT 👑]: oh no. how hopelessly forgetful of me
[TXT 👑]: I guess I'll have to see you again tomorrow to reclaim it
Again, Chrissy found herself stifling the giggles that bubbled from her chest before they ever reached passage through her mouth.
Chrissy: LOL, I was definitely wondering where that was going... Chrissy: Sunday? On church property? In front of mom, dad, the pastor and the Womens Bible study group? Do you want to lose the ability to breathe, Eddie? :')
She froze when Eddie asked her to pick where they would have dinner. Jason never asked her preference. Which she thought was just the way it went when it came to having a date. Wait, was this a date? Her stomach did a somersault that would put any of her cheerleader tumbling to shame. Mentally running through Hawkins's very few options, she settled on Benny's. There was a side salad on the menu there that, with drizzled vinaigrette, came to no more than 200 calories. That might allot her a handful of fries, which she'd order to disguise how little was actually eaten.
Chrissy: Let's do Benny's :)
Chrissy yawned, checking the time and noticing how late it was. She had a test in a few hours. Her first period was Math, of course. Chrissy loathed Math. And while the only thing she wanted to do right now was talk to Eddie until the sun peeked through her bedroom curtains, she knew a few hours of sleep prior to tonight would serve her better. At least she wouldn't be an entire zombie if she went to sleep relatively soon.
Chrissy: I'll see you tomorrow then?
The Breaking of Chrissy Cunningham
“Incoming, Cunningham!”
Chrissy ducked instinctively, but not low enough to escape the wallop of a water balloon right to her chest. Freezing cold water bled through her shirt as she yelped, and the soaked cotton immediately stuck to her sweaty skin.
Enraged, she glared in the direction of the warning voice and met the deceptively innocent, brown-eyed stare of one Head Boys Counselor peeking out from behind a tree.
“Edward Munson,” she snapped. “What in the heck are you doing?”
“Ooh,” a teenage boy’s voice called out from her other side. Dustin, probably. He’d been Eddie’s shadow from day one. “Miss Chrissy said heck. She’s gonna be real mad at you, Mister Eddie.”
