ace bi fjord is real because i said so
* ewehorned .
the lie that falls past his lips is like a hand slowly closing around the wings of her beating heart. careful. inevitable. a practiced motion. her tongue dances behind her teeth as her cheeks puff slightly in self-restraint. she wants to pry, want’s to insist in asking him what’s wrong —- but fear sets into her shoulders. she doesn’t want him prying, doesn’t want to open this can of worms rattling between her ears. he isn’t fine. neither is she. the expression that wins over her features is one of sympathy. slowly, her legs unfold from beneath her, bare feet finding the wood beneath. hands brace at the edge of the cot, the indecision on whether to stand keeping her grounded, small, curled in on herself. shoulders rise to near her ears, eyes averted from the worry in his gaze.
any other night she would be delighting in his hesitant scrutiny, wiggling in earnest at his inquisitiveness. but now, she is sore, and tired, and just before she can spiral down into the darkness of her own thoughts his words cut through the threads. almost in surprise, she picks up her head, brows flying upward as violet hues dare to flicker to him, warmth rushing up the side of her neck. calm down. calm down, jester. she forces her heart to ease, standing slowly as the ship shifts beneath them, bobbing gently in the water. an apology. she’s almost ashamed to admit she hadn’t seen it coming. hadn’t hoped for it. a sort of seriousness furrows her brow.
“ oh. ” she starts, glancing off to the side as she gathers her hands behind her, fingers anxiously twisting around one another, “ i mean. thank you. apology accepted. ” a firm nod, tension in her jaw. she wants to say so much more, and can only hold her tongue so long. there’s a brief moment of silence where she feels like she’s going to burst, “ it’s just – fjord – you disappeared. and you keep on – making stupid choices, and it’s scary to watch, you know? ” she’s almost tripping over the words, but her point still stands. lips pinch into a tense line, “ things have been crazy, and i know it’s been a lot for you, but —- ” i don’t know if i can watch you do this to yourself for much longer.
she accepts his apology without question. fjord’s jaw hangs slack with the weight of words left unsaid. part of him wants to interrupt. draw the conversation back to ‘i’m sorry’ and swear not to leave her behind ever again. the silence that falls between them in that moment of hesitation on his part is unbearable.
it’s scary to watch. his heart beat echoes in his throat. “ i don’t -- ” his voice catches but it’s quickly smothered in the grips of a nervous chuckle. “ i don’t want to scare you. ”
jester’s words cut him deeper than he realizes. it’s silly. he’s all too used to scaring people. usually though it’s without merit. based solely on the nature of his being a half-orc. this is not that, he rationalizes. reminding himself that he’s dragging all of them across an ocean on what is essentially a wild goose chase. it’s true that his want for answers has often blinded him to the needs of the others, despite his best efforts to the contrary.
“ it’s just harder than i realized. ” he moves to sit beside her on the cot, finally. staring at the calloused palms he rests in his lap. “ i’m trying to do the best with the circumstances we’re in but it feels like with every move things just complicate themselves. ”
doubt fills his chest. he’s chasing a dead end. and at what cost ? snake-like eyes zero in on jester. throughout everything, she’s been there right beside him. “ look, i trust you, jes. if this gets too much. if i -- well ... you just say the word and we’ll turn this ship around. ”

she spends the first few minutes alone in her chambers in a cold silence. trembling fingers can not grip her pencils tight enough to scrawl even a measly, crummy doodle. a single line jitters in a corner of her sketchbook, eyes puffy and red from tears of relief, or joy, of fear, freckled cheeks full of tension. finally, she resigns herself to silence, not making a sound as she strips away her armor from her sore body, the gouges in her chest and back still screaming with the echoes of pain. slowly, she sinks onto her cot, violet hues fixated on the spot where the floor meets the wall.
with an unceremonious flop, she throws herself onto her back, arms above her head as vacant stare finds the woodwork above her. slowly, she tries to coax eyes to close. in that instant, she can see its face; watches her hand fall out of focus in her line of vision, the snarling snout of yellowed teeth, lighting darting along its jaw, wreathed in an ever present flame. eyes pop open as he body snaps to attention, jolting up until she’s standing. it isn’t until she’s gotten her bearings, until she convinces her racing heart that it’s over, that she notices the fresh wave of tears spilling past her cheeks, beading on her chin as lips quiver.
white noise fills her ears, she’s a thousand miles away, until a knock at her door sends her mind reeling back to reality. the voice is familiar; heat rushes across her collarbone as she sniffles, loudly, pressing a hand to her chest, “ one second i’m naked — ” her tone is wavering, weak, even the smile that tries to come with it is unconvincing. swiping at her cheeks, bare feet padding to the door. she opens it quietly with a soft sniff, blinking rapidly to try and hide her tears, “ wha.. what did you want to talk about ? ”
at first, her tone is a bit loud, but seeing him almost hunched at her door reminds her of the hour, of the soreness of her body. the tiefling steps aside, letting her companion inside before softly shutting the door behind him. with a soft clear of her throat and a hum, she tosses herself down onto her cot, folding her legs beneath herself and patting the space beside her in invitation, “ are you okay.. ? ”
the familiar feeling of guilt had settled in his gut and become unshakeable but it washes away for a brief moment, as a small smile plays across scarred lips. even though her joke comes on a wavering voice, he can appreciate how jester always tries to keep things light even when she’s hurting. as the door to her cabin opens, she’s met with fjord’s facade, his smile gone and replaced with a look of concern as he gives the tiefling a once over.
he doesn’t enter through the door way but no further into the room. opting to standing stiff -shouldered at the door, watching jester move past him to take a seat on her cot and offer him the space beside her. still, he does not move. “fine. i’m fine. ” thats a lie. one that doesn’t need to be sniffed out. he’s far from fine but his own issues can be put aside for the time being. they can always be put aside. right now, his focus is on jester.
“ i just wanted to apologize. ” he says, a hand finding the back of his neck as his gaze turns downward.
( wish i could be there for ya ) ind. priv. jester from cr2 X ind. priv. fjord from cr2 ( give me a reason to go )
sleep does not come easily to him. he lies awake in his bunk, staring at the ceiling above. fjord is unsure of how much time has passed but he knows theres not much more he can take of this. before long he’s risen to his feet, making his way through the the squall-eater’s hull to jester’s room. he stands outside her door but for a minute as fjord rehearses what he’s going to say to her. the words he’d left unsaid upon their return come sweeping back to him.
she brushed shoulders with death today and though she may act tough, fjord knows when jester is hurting. at least, when it’s as obvious as it is now. he’d thought about simply giving her some space but his stomach lurches, when he thinks about how he’d left her in that strange plane with a dragon at her heels and no way of knowing whether she’d make it out alive... or at all. and while these past few weeks had become a turning point for him. he can’t afford to leave jester behind. she means too much to him. they’re in this together.
knuckles rap in quick succession against her door. he clears his throat. always a nervous habit. “uh... jester?” he calls out, loud enough for her to hear him on the other side of the door but still quiet, so as not to rouse anyone else on the ship. “i know it’s late but do you have a moment? i... feel like maybe we should talk.”

in her head, a thousand scenarios flicker across her thoughts, features stalling with the slight shake of her head. fjord couldn’t mean —- maybe avantika’d forced him into a corner, so to speak. maybe she didn’t give him a way out of the situation. did he try to pull something on her and need to cover his tracks ? fjord would have told her, fjord tells her everything, fjord would never lie to her. she doesn’t realize how fast she’s breathing until the drawl of the warlock’s adopted tone filters in through the nightmare scenarios that cloud her vision. the lump in her throat solidifies, and she nods, forcing her lips to keep from quivering in the ocean breeze. she knows how precarious this whole situation is. if she were to lose her cool… things could go very badly; she could not live with herself if she got all of her friends hurt, or worse.
over the gulls his admission cuts through, and her shoulders tense. she knew ? she did. from the way he can’t meet her eyes. her heart feels heavy, as the wonder in her eyes lessens to a seriousness. she prepares her words carefully, looking off to the side to see if any of the crew might be within earshot. Her whisper is almost gravelly, low in tone as she tilts her head down.
“ did she try to kill you ? ” a beat, as her parched throat screams for silence, “ or.. did.. did you get anything.. ? i mean be.. besides.. ” her tone threatens to crack, and she’s trying, truly trying, to hold together, “ you must have.. right ? or did – were you scared ? was she like.. ” she tries to come up with.. something. anything to lighten this tension in her shoulders. a part of her instantly poses the question of what her competition was capable of – but it didn’t feel right to ask, not even for her. besides, competition for what ? she and fjord had no commitment, no promises made. the memory of air filling her lungs once hummed so sweetly in the corners of her mind – now it feels like a sharp pain between her ribs.
he’s a master observer but with jester, he doesn’t need to be. she wears her emotions plainly. he sees the slight tremble in her lip, the way she carries her shoulders and can even hear the hitch in her breath as she speaks. it’s clear to him that this confession has cut her deep. he’s just not quite sure of all the ways in which it did. “ no ... no ... she didn’t try anythin’ like that. ” he shakes his head. the truth of the matter is he gained very little knowledge from their night together but avantika found herself plenty. he told a boldfaced lie which she was able to sniff out. now, he’s concerned with how much else she knows he’s lying about and what sort of danger its put all of them in. he turns back to face the sea, knuckles turning white as he grips the deck railing. “ it was just business. ” he’ll spare jester the details but he feels the need to that point of information particularly clear. “ i lied to her about whether i knew vandren and she knew it. i had to regain her trust somehow, so ... i showed all my cards, as it were.”

his hands are clamps, they pin the willowy form of her movements in place. he grabs hold of her and she can feel the warmth flourish under her skin, just like nott said it would, and she feels her heart skip up into her throat, and everything is wonderful, skipping over the wispy clouds overhead ——- and then, the look in his eyes, the timbre of his voice settles in. did she do something wrong ? was he really, truly uncomfortable with this ? an apology and a question fight for the use of her tongue, all the while violet hues wide as saucers take in every twitch of his face. by the time she starts listening, really listening, the ever present smile falls from her features. weight sinks her onto her heels, “ fjord.. ” escapes in that silence, and she frets while he rubs at his jaw, threatening to drain the color from her very skin, “ you paused, though. sometimes, when i talk too fast, i say the wrong word because there’s just so much i want to say, but you were – ” she finds herself floundering, now, while water crashes against the side of the ship below them, “ – and caduceus said the same thing, that you were managing just fine ! ” the words hesitate to push past her lips, as she digs her heels into the woodwork, as if her body were becoming stone itself.
this isn’t how he wanted her to find out. fjord wonders, if he had just been upfront about avantika with her from the run and go, would her reaction have been the same ? a voice in the back of his head mutters ‘ you should have told her ’ and he agrees now, in retrospect, that it might’ve been the best course of action. jester, out of all the others, is his oldest companion. he should be able to trust her. so, why did he feel as though he couldn’t when it came to this ? they’re not together. theres no loyalty he owes her in that sense and yet ... “ jester. ” he says her name like it’s a warning, as her voice edges above the sound of gulls hanging overhead and the deck work being done around them. they’re in over their heads, way too deep to fall to pieces now, and over this. if someone overhears, he’s possibly a dead man. and thats implying avantika isn’t already keenly aware of his game to begin with. “ jester, please. i’m beggin’ you, keep your voice down. ” the hand on his jaw moves to the back of his neck, “ i — alright. you’re right. avantika and i ... ” but for some reason, he can’t bring himself to say it in full. “ we ... well, y’know ... ”

“ heey, fjooord~ ” accent lilts in taunting tone as the tiefling saunters across the deck. she’s been trying to follow nott’s advice, truly, but she can not be so cold so constantly, not to her closest friend ! besides, how was she supposed to listen to him, to be there when he needs her, when pretending she doesn’t care at all ? still, she tries to put on airs, lips pursed slightly as elbows rest on the rail, bumping her hip a bit roughly into fjord’s, peering up at him with mischief in the curl of her lips, “ sooo. how is the seducing avantika plan going ? i know you said you were okay with it, but if you really don’t think you’re experienced enough, or if you’re uncomfortable, you know, i’m sure beau would take over. and i could help you practice ! i could pretend to be avantikaaa, and i could be like… ” here, she straightens up, swaying her hips to the side sultrily as she exaggerates her accent, creating some freakish hybrid of dialect, “ ‘ooh, fyord, yoo are so ‘andsoome – ‘ something like that ! i mean i’m not as good at the voices, but i want to help ! ”
he gaze turns from the murky depths beneath that ship, pivoting to face jester. there lies the smallest hint of a smile, bit back between the thinning gaps in the half-orc’s teeth. of course, her cadence is absurd and fjord, a well-practiced individual in the art, can’t help but be amused by it. but all too soon, he sobers. the crease in his forehead that has been there since the start of all this returns. “ look, uh, jester... ” two calloused hands come to a gentle resting place on the tiefling’s shoulders in an attempt to still her. he starts to speak but he’s not certain on how to continue, nor how much he should say. especially to jester. “ i appreciate the sentiment but i think that i’ve ... managed on my own. ” managed not the word he was looking for. fjord clears his throat then. hands now moving from jester’s shoulder and instead, grabbing at his jaw, feeling for the outline of his tusks beneath the flesh. a nervous habit of his. “ i misspoke. ‘manage’. ” he says quickly, “ i’ll manage with avantika on my own. ”
* JESTER .
Her eyes widen, her best attempts to put on an innocent face beginning to fail as she nods as convincingly as she possibly can, right hand pushing strands of her hair back. As if somehow, someway, that makes her look more serious. Because it should, it really should! She’s never seen a serious responsible person with messy natural loose hair, perhaps perfectly curled long hair, sure, but that’s different. “ I didn’t! ” Jester insists, crossing her arms and looking back at Kiri now hanging around with Nott and Caleb, “ She must have… I don’t know… heard it from Beau! That’s probably it, probably. Or maybe she’s in love with you. That’s also a possibility. ”
Probably not, though. But everything’s possible. “ Fjord, that’s really good! ” She gasps, grinning and nodding along with her compliment to try to distract him, “ I didn’t know you could do my accent so well! You should do it more often! ”
despite the obvious joking nature of jester’s comment, fjord grimaces, ❝ thats weird. i don’t even want to entertain that. ❞ he follows the tiefling’s gaze to kiri, where she stands at nott’s side. he has a little more to say about their growing attachment to the young bird creature but fjord keeps it to himself. they’ve already agreed to part ways with kiri the minute they find a safer environment for her so there exists nothing more he needs to say on the matter. though, he knows when it comes time to part ways with her, jester and nott are sure to take it harder than the others. he crosses his arms and turns back to jester, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips at the compliment but he shakes his head ; not so easily distracted from the matter at hand. ❝ nope. don’t change the subject. little critter’s got a mind like a steel trap, jes. i just want all of us to be careful what we say around her. ❞
there’s not many songs on it yet but check out my fjord playlist

“ that was – impressive, what you did back there. “ he starts. calloused fingers are shoved into his pockets. “ where’d you appear, and then disappear. “
❝ well, thank you. ❞ the compliment, though welcomed, is met by a smile attempting to be restrained. he also happened to think what he’d done was mighty impressive, especially given the failing on his part during the battle prior but to oh, to be humble. ❝ it’s just a little something i learned recently. i’ve been sorta excited to try it out. ❞
i refuse to let my suffering make me cruel.
* guttersniper .
the stream is low enough for him to pass with only his boots getting wet. he sloughs through the water and arrives on the other side of the bank. he keeps a comment to himself, wanting to avoid being smacked. doesn’t sound like a very good guard. fjord’s been friendly so far, but just because someone acts like his friend doesn’t make them one. “ i don’t – have any healing potions. “ disappointing a stranger shouldn’t make him feel the way it does. however, he quickly distracts himself and begins to rummage through the satchel on his waist. it has been tied in a tight knot, twice, for it was intended for the use of someone taller. he works with what’s given to him.
“ i have this. “ he pulls out a tiny bottle, full of thread and one needle. “ if you’d let me see it, i could probably stitch it up. “ living the way he has has taught him many important things. closing wounds was one of them. if it was deep enough, he would have to start a fire, cauterize it. it raises the problem of alerting his friends, and he doesn’t know how friendly they’d all be together. “ if you’d sit … there, “ he points with his free arm at a log towards the thickening of grass and weeds, “ perhaps i could do something. wouldn’t be the best stitches, but no one ever said medical stitches had to look pretty. “
❝ thats unfortunate. a healing potion would’ve been a big help. ❞ but he understands, in the more rural areas of wildemount, magic items are hard to come by. it's why his party is currently without. the half-orc’s eyes flick from the boy, as he rummages around in his traveling satchel, then back to his wounds, until finally they find themselves glancing back up the stream bed. he’ll need return to his party soon lest they start worrying. assuming the conversation over, he’s a little startled when the kid speaks up again, a vial with a needle and thread held between his thumb and forefinger. fjord regards this all with a skeptical brow.
without healing potions or spells he’ll have to find some way to bandage himself up and this seems as good an option as any. he doesn’t inquire the preparedness of a child for this precise situation, he knows enough about the cruelty of the world to know that being anything otherwise might spell one’s death. what he does question, however, is the level of skill. the last thing he needs is an infection to make matters worse.
after a beat, fjord shrugs and further rolls up his bloodied sleeves, ❝ it looks like i don’t have much else in the way of options. ❞ he approaches the log and takes his seat. he holds his arm out with open palm, ❝ but before you start stickin’ a needle in my arm, i think we should be a little more acquainted ; you can call me fjord. ❞
