at this point, pb are teetering on the thin line between diversity and tokenism with this focus on straight white characters over lgbt characters and characters of colour...... it’s very upsetting to see as they have written characters of colour and lgbt characters very well in the past but recently the way they’ve handled certain character arcs reflects a bias towards white characters especially white men. an example is landry’s betrayal, we have options to treat him nicely at the ball game, while aurora doesn’t always get the option to be nice and we have to get in her face about the patient theft regardless.

there is also the treatment of beckett compared to other lis in the elementalists, which i personally believe was a big factor as to why there wasn’t a book three, and also chris from the freshman, the whole first freshman book mainly centred around him and his relationship with becca and also the fact that ethan has a diamond scene EVERY chapter and other lis are lucky to get a group scene where they’re shown for a split second.

i do think we have been very vocal about this on social media and i hope that pb take our constructive criticism into account and learn to become better.

and this is NOT me hating on white/straight/male characters, this is just me hoping that characters from minority backgrounds get the same amount of characterisation.

a cool thing about FA i think is that each of the LIs mirror at least part of mc's own relationship with their mother. blaine's is obvious from the get-go: they both want to be free from the bs their parents have to make them go through, and forge their own career path away from it. mc's is slightly different though with how they actively want to support and be their for their mom and for their mom to just put them first.

ayna's scenes show how her dad is her hero who raised her by himself, mirroring mc's own situation with her mom and how she raised mc alone after their dad passed away:

ayna's storyline also leads mc to question their thoughts on their mom, and how far they're willing to go for her:

and with the latest chapter we have tatum who really wants to follow in his mother's footsteps,

but eventually questions it and changes his mind after (presumably) being reunited with mc again, kind of mirroring how mc's affair with blaine/ayna/tatum himself have made them question their career path more:
