Class Critique - Zara Fong
I was intrigued by the way Zara used a toy as the subject of the stop-motion, so that children can identify with this character. The view we have of this character is similar in perspective to that of a third person view video game. This technique could have been used to give the audience a sense of control over this character and give them the idea that they can change the course of the narrative. This is an important reference to the ability that the audience has to make a change in the life of underprivileged persons in third world countries.
However I would like to have seen a longer clip so we could make a more concrete conclusion. I felt that there needed to be more frames per second and a greater shift in movement to really draw us into this character's world. Possibly there could have been gestures incorporated, as simple as a turn of the head to look at objects etc. to give the character more human qualities, but then again it could loose the aspect of control that has been created.
I can certainly see this clip being sculpted into something quite powerful and compelling; certainly towards the targeted audience. Keep up the good work and you will succeed with excellence if you branch from this initial idea.
