the clicks communicator is really cool and I hope the blackberry-style phone market keeps growing. I'm not ready to commit to buying one tho.

I was thinking tho cuz they say it has capacitive keys, for gestures and shit. But I'm pretty sure it's just a touch sensor per key not an actual continuous touch field, so it wouldn't be precise enough to use as a track/touchpad.

I looked into it and there actually is a keyboard, the DS Pixel, that is a touchscreen with a plastic keyboard on top. It can still sense touch thru the keys! and the pro version has hall effect sensors so typing is more precise. I don't need the screen, but it shows that the tech is possible!

if I had the time, tools, and budget I would prototype a keyboard, but alas...

ok, actually, that idea from my last post actually gave me a proper game loop! holy shit I've been stuck on the core game loop for so long.

let's say there's a dictator (or more accurately, a corporation-like government) in a society with terrible wealth disparity between the upper and "middle" class (little to no distinction between middle and lower). the goal of the game is to either overythrow or change the mind of the dictator, which also is a GOAP NPC, like everyone else. if the player can show that their beliefs/goals are more effective than the dictator's corrupt opinion, then the dictator's GOAP agent would naturally adopt that better strategy.

ok one way to do this would be to talk to and basically unionize the working-class agents so that workers striking or sabotaging directly affects the goals of the dictator agent, and it forces them to consider the fact that people agree with an opposing belief/goal

I really want to make it feel like you're in a real living world, so that shouldn't be the only way to stop the dictator. another would be to infiltrate the government and directly interact with the dictator. you could rise the ranks and gain enough authority to affect the dictator's beliefs/goals, or you could talk to and convince enough people in the government that they affect the dictator for you.

the part to figure out next is how to actually talk to agents and have that affect their beliefs/goals, via a dialogue system.

today I wanna talk about how NPC beliefs and goals evolve within a world where the player can affect the course of events and their effects/consequences. If I want the game to explore the idea that any person is a product of their environment and experience, then the beliefs and actions of an NPC must be influenced by the actions of the player. In a typical "your actions matter" game, like a TellTale one, that is just handled by the game story/script being a branching tree. I am proposing making each NPC a GOAP agent with beliefs about goals and plans to act out those goals, but the player may influence those beliefs so that the plan of action doesn't include taking advantage of other people, or convincing the agent that acting just for the benefit of itself is a lower-value action.

now no idea yet how that'd actually work but it's a cool idea

here's a brief explanation of predictive processing/how your brain works.

the sensationalized title would be "what you perceive as reality is actually a controlled hallucination".

think of reading text that's a bit too far away (or blurry) to read. if you look at it long enough, given the context of what the text is for/where it is, you will probably be able to read most of it. and, at least for me, when you've deciphered it, it becomes easy to read because your brain literally fills in the gaps with the text.

the point I'm making is, our actual sensory data is sparse and noisy. the brain, based on what you've experienced in the past, fills in the gaps. (kinda like TAA, DLSS, and frame generation. well actually it's not really like those temporal effects.

rather than filling in the gaps, the brain actually generates its best guess of "reality" from scratch, constrained by sensor data, hence "controlled hallucination". when the brain's prediction/beliefs about world are different enough from sensory information, then the brain has to decide if it wants to update its beliefs.

I just realized psychedelics/hallucinogens probably just confuse the brain's ability to decide between its beliefs and the sensor evidence, and that leads to the brain's beliefs drifting, hence reality starts to break down.

oh yea also those illusion images that look like it's moving are because they confuse the brain's beliefs, and for some reason it strongly believes that pattern is moving.

Another thing on my mind is video game enemy/npc AI. rn I'm the lead coder for a really cool vidya gaem I'm not gonna say much about BUT

One of the artists recommended F.E.A.R's AI system and oh my god this is my nerd heaven. GOAP/Goal Oriented Action Planning is a system that defines the AI's goals abstractly like "I want to kill the player, and I want to not die" and then the action planner tries to pathfind and find a sequence of actions that will achieve the goal. Because it's a lot less rigidly scripted than something like a behavior tree, GOAP ends up making AI that come up with emergent, unscripted behavior that looks a lot more intelligent. It's so fucking sweet.

I've been thinking over how to add proper cooperation between different enemies/NPCs because in F.E.A.R, the AI cannot see or interact with each other. There are 2 modes of cooperation: an action that requires multiple simultaneous inputs (like holding down two buttons to open a door) and the other mode is when one AI cannot access an action but another AI can (like needing to hold a button in another room to open the door) Once that's added, the AI will be able to do some crazy puzzle solving and shit! (someone NEEDS to make a pikmin type game with this tech NOW)

The other addition to GOAP I was thinking of is adding some adaptivity to its actions so if it's fighting a player, it will find a new plan if the player keeps punishing a specific move, but that will require much more work than just allowing agents to communicate goals to each other.

so here's my big spiel about my scifi worldbuilding

I've posted some art on here of two of the ocs from this world, one being my pfp, Glasgo (although my pfp is technically an enphoso version of him), and the other is a mammal-like alien named Samira. I'll explain their species later.

For years, inspired by media like the Hitchhiker's Guide and Futurama, oh and I can't forget to mention Jan Misali, I've been obsessed with how two completely different species with no common ground other than being sapient would interact, and things like pidgins forming. (altho I've never actually committed to making a full conlang)

Anyways, my world is set on a branch of the Milky Way far away from us. If a human ever does appear in the story, it would be rather insignificant because one of the big themes I want to push is that there isnt any inherent difference/superiority between any species even if one is more "advanced" or their brain works on a different timescale, making them appear to think "faster" or "better". Characters or groups that hold prejudice against others will have their beliefs deconstructed showing that any and all examples of "superiority" are just them being more learned or experienced due to their culture/ environment. Furthermore, "intelligence" isnt just one thing, there are countless subjects that you can be "intelligent" about, but again that's really just experience.

Oh also gender isnt really a definite thing in that world because not every species has a sexual binary, so outside of those species' own languages and cultures, it would be seen as strange to single someone out for their sex because unless the sexual dimorphism is obvious (like peacocks), most people wouldn't even be able to tell them apart. In the interspecies common language, the pronouns would only specify stuff like 1st 2nd 3rd person and plurals.

Okay now about the species. Right now I have giglians and uhh haven't named Sami's species because it's designed to be kinda uninteresting.

Glasgo is a giglian, from planet Giglos, and is of course heavily based off of glaggles. The current idea is that giglians are advanced single celled organisms (or a multicellular goop) that reproduce via mitosis. This means that every giglian is essentially a clone of the one it split off of, with identical memories up to that point. If two giglians are connected by a split that happened a year ago, then they will remember the same memories up until the split point. This, in a way, forms a sort of familial culture that isn't based around who your parents are and your bloodline, but the location and events that caused the previous you to split/mitosis. Also this ofc means that all giglians are nonbinary and asexual (and they're generally aromantic but thats a cultural thing. if a giglian grew up elsewhere, they would probably engage in romance).

Sami is an unnamed species so far. It's intentionally pretty much just an anthro because the point of her species is to be the closest thing to human you'll see. Sorry I don't have much else to say about that.

The idea is that Sami and Glasgo are acquaintances but share a hatred of the status quo, Sami specifically hating the space cops because of a personal grudge

hi I was thinking about wanting to find a space to just talk into the void about shit that interests me and I entertained the thought of twitter, and posted a thread about some ai cognition theory shit and why llms are dumb for not using at least some of that tech (actual memory) but god please not full active inference that is in my opinion capable of being conscious (its based on the current best theory of human cognition, predictive processing)...
