What food group is honey what the fuck is this stuff
Apparently its categorized as raw meat by the FDA, which is cursed information if I’ve ever seen it.
WHAT
I wonder if this is due to tax reasons (why tomatoes are taxonomically fruit, but legally vegetable) or religious reasons (why beavers are considered fish, for purposes of Lent).
“Beavers are considered fish, for purposes of Lent”
If I’m being honest here, I don’t know what to do with this information.
IIRC hippos are also catholically fish.
You know what, if you can take down a hippo you deserve to eat it during lent
I just made a meme that is so incredibly specific
I adore the romantic trope of “whatever universe, my soul will find you.”
The small spaceship in the episode ‘Helping Hand’ of the Love Death + Robots series was designed by Yannic Kawan.
hey boss, just "accidentally" stabbed my "hand". got any cursed blood facts?
great news anon, as a human your blood is already among the most cursed on the planet!
see, most people don’t realize this, but mammal blood is actually completely unique among vertebrates. if you put a drop of mammal blood on a microscope slide next to a drop of lizard blood, you would be able to tell them apart instantly!
how? simple- mammalian blood cells don’t have a nucleus!
the nucleus is a dark mass at the center of a cell that tells it what to do and lets it reproduce by splitting itself in two- and every other major vertebrate group on the planet has nucleated blood cells.
BUT NOT MAMMALS. (these cells are NAKED somebody please GET THEM SOME PANTS.)
at some point in their 200+ million years of evolutionary history, mammals discovered that if you force your red blood cells to drop their nucleus and turn into pink cheerios, they can focus on carrying oxygen and ONLY carrying oxygen! this means that mammal blood is much more efficient than fish or reptile or even bird blood at carrying oxygen liter-for-liter, though at the cost of lugging around some extra internal organs and having to make new blood inside of your bones. what a steal!
maybe that’s why all the stock photo blood researchers are making that face.
I’ve not had time to write a post in a while. This post is probably somewhat confusing. But this discovery is so goddamn neat. We’ve just scratched the surface on something remarkable and I have so many questions. Here’s the study: https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2020/06/17/2004805117 Other places to see my posts: INSTAGRAM / FACEBOOK / ETSY / KICKSTARTER
The abstract from the paper
Fish have somehow colonized isolated water bodies all over the world without human assistance. It has long been speculated that these colonization events are assisted by waterbirds, transporting fish eggs attached to their feet and feathers, yet empirical support for this is lacking. Recently, it was suggested that endozoochory (i.e., internal transport within the gut) might play a more important role, but only highly resistant diapause eggs of killifish have been found to survive passage through waterbird guts. Here, we performed a controlled feeding experiment, where developing eggs of two cosmopolitan, invasive cyprinids (common carp, Prussian carp) were fed to captive mallards. Live embryos of both species were retrieved from fresh feces and survived beyond hatching. Our study identifies an overlooked dispersal mechanism in fish, providing evidence for bird-mediated dispersal ability of soft-membraned eggs undergoing active development. Only 0.2% of ingested eggs survived gut passage, yet, given the abundance, diet, and movements of ducks in nature, our results have major implications for biodiversity conservation and invasion dynamics in freshwater ecosystems.
It’s really cool and possibly has some serious implications for some ecological modelling of fish movements and population genetics.
you people will reblog anything
One thing I’ve learned about writing is ”give everything a face”. It’s no good to write passively that the nobility fled the city or that the toxic marshes were poisoning the animals beyond any ability to function. Make a protagonist see how a desperate woman in torn silks climbs onto a carriage and speeds off, or a two-headed deer wanders right into the camp and into the fire. Don’t just have an ambiguous flock of all-controlling oligarchy, name one or two representatives of it, and illustrate just how vile and greedy they are as people.
it’s bad to have characters who serve no purpose in the story, but giving something a face is a perfectly valid purpose.
This is the real heart of “show don’t tell”

IF YOU ARE UNMARRIED, DON'T HAVE KIDS, AND HATE YOUR PARENTS PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HAVE A FUCKING WILL
this has been a public service announcement from your friendly neighborhood probate lawyer
Again:
1. The law doesn't care how long your parents and family have been out of your life
2. The law doesn't care about your long term friends or "found family"
If you don't have legal documents that say otherwise, your biological family calls all the shots.
This goes especially for LGBTQ+. Please do not get deadnamed in your obituary.
How to make a will.
How to make a living will (Advance Healthcare Directive) so you don’t get fucked over by biological family if you end up in a situation where you cannot make your own healthcare choices.
