Them: Higher education isn't a right! You have to pay tuition to go to college!

Me: But pretty much every job, even entry-level jobs, require at least a bachelor's degree.

Them: Work an hourly job that doesn't require a four-year degree!

Me: Ok, then can we raise the minimum wage so I can work full time and, like, live and eat and other essential functions?

Them: No! If you want to make decent money, go to college and get a degree!

Me: But...

Them: Ugh, this generation is so lazy. I think I'll pray about it.

Facebook friend: “I have 4 degrees and I’m a veteran. I make $20 an hour. Why does a fast food worker deserve to make only $5 less than me? If you agree with this law, please explain why.”

What I said: Because I don’t think it is fair that citizens have to financially make up for the low wages that corporations pay their workers while they generally make record profits each year.

What I wanted to say: Because I’m a decent human being who doesn’t use the opportunities and privileges I have been afforded in my life to shit on the hard work and long hours of people who haven’t been as lucky as me. Because the minimum wage was created to regulate wage and ensure that people wouldn’t have to rely on the government to supplement their income, and now 2-3 jobs don’t cover basic necessities. Because it is not up to me to decide what job is worthy of what wage, but it is my job to support the notion that every person in this country deserves to have a roof over their head and food to eat and health care. Because most other first world countries in the world haven’t imploded under the oppressive nature of livable wages, even when the very corporations pushing to stop wage equality here are doing just fine in those countries. Because there have been plenty of corporations (Costco, Starbucks, etc.) that have paid over minimum wage and still made insane profits. Because I worked in food service for 9+ years where I was lucky enough to make a living through tips, but suffered greatly on slow nights because then I was only making $3-$5 an hour. BUT IT IS MOSTLY BECAUSE I DON’T THINK I AM BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE AND MORE DESERVING OF BASIC NECESSITIES. MOSTLY THAT.

Everyone else on the thread: You’ll be eating your words when MACHINES take over and we lose ALL OF THE JOBS!
