“geez, what’d you do, kid? sounds super fun.” she glanced down at the girl’s hand when she looked at hers. “eh. i mean, kinda, but not really.”

“i fell off a stupid horse.” she shrugged, still trying to figure out if the older girls hand was broken or not. “maybe it’s broken, it looks broken, but m’not a doctor so.”

“god, my hand is so fucked up, dude. this look broken to you?”

“what’d you do? i just got stitches in mine.” she squinted trying to take a look at the girl’s hand. “can you move it?”

         “yikes. that sounds rough.” josie widens her eyes then shrugs. “sure, if you really feel the need to.”

“i didn’t even realize i’d got hurt until i saw blood everywhere.” she shrugged too. “i look like frankenstein.” her words came out as she showed the girl her stitched up hand.

“well yeah, but even out there they have limits as to how far we can go.” eden didn’t do well with confined spaces, no matter how big they seemed to be. being so used to the open and then having to be in certain spaces wasn’t something she liked. 

“but it’s huge, there’s no way you can get bored with all the space we have.” blaze didn’t get her deal. most people would love to have as much space as the safe house did, it was rich people huge as she called it.

“they would still be a little tender after three days — it depends on the person’s pain tolerance and the area they’re in. if they’re in an area that gets a lot of movement, they’ll be sore,” she said, putting a pair of gloves on. “can i see ‘em?”

blaze listened to her carefully, what she was saying made sense, but she just wished the pain would go away like  — NOW. nodding she stretched her arm out to show the nurse her hand which was stitched up the side.

“okay. i can take a look at them for you if you wanna sit on the bed for me,” she said, putting hand sanitizer in her hand. “how long ago did you get them?” she asked.

blaze nodded, getting up on the bed like piper had asked her to. “um, like three days ago i think?”

while sitting at her desk, she twisted the chair gently back and forth as she typed away on her computer to update a patient’s file. during the five months she’d been working here, everything was routine and she moved quickly but efficiently. today was a little different. her usual babysitter canceled on her so she had to bring kaitlyn with her — not that she hadn’t done it before, but before it was only for a few hours. this time, it was for her entire shift and she knew kaitlyn would get restless. just as she’d finished updating the patient file, she heard a knock at the open door. “someone’s here, mommy,” kaitlyn said. “i know, baby. finish coloring,” she said before looking towards the door and giving the other a smile. “hi, what can i do for you?”

blaze groaned as the pain in her hand continued to throb. she’d never gotten stitches before, and the eight running up the side of her hand were irritating her like nothing before. trudging through the medical wing, she spotted an open door belonging to a nurse, finally. “um, yeah, my stitches.” she spoke quietly. “they’re still hurting. when i got them, they said it shouldn’t hurt still now.”

“There’s gotta be some pizza places that are still open, right? We should order a pizza.”

“i wish, i would’ve already ordered like twenty to the front door in dr. nelson’s name so she had to pay for em’.”

memphis was enthralled with moana as she sat on her room’s carpet, coloring books and crayons scattered all around her. humming along to “how far i go” and scribbling carefully into the flower on the edge of the page, the tiny brunette was so focused that she didn’t even notice or remember her ajar door or the person lingering against it. memph let out a yelp of surprise, shutting her coloring book instinctively startled.

blaze had been practically going through every room, searching for her younger sister. she knew how she got when she wasn’t around, and it was making blaze anxious that memphis could be somewhere curled up waiting for her to find her. she almost missed the mousy little brunette because of how fast she was going in and out of rooms, the only thing stopping her to recognize her sister in front of her, the yelp that escaped the other’s lips. “oh! there you are.” she breathed heavy. “i was searching this whole darn place for you.”

“i don’t want to be stuck here for a year, though.” she said, tone of voice matching the others. “my home has all of that. and we’re not stuck inside these walls.” it was true, at her home there was much more space to run around and be outside rather than confined inside the facility. “sure, it’s fancy n’ all but it’s not where i would wanna be if i had the choice.”

“stuck?” blaze was puzzled. had she not seen the massive amount of land filled with outside activities for everyone? “you know only the mandatory stuff here is inside right? this is a ranch. there’s like a ton of acres for you to run around and do things.”

“yeah, that sort of makes sense.” she nods, “it does look a little bit ridiculous.” she shrugged, looking back at the tv where a girl was running around looking for the beach when it was clear the beach was right next to her. “this kind of stuff happens every episode?”

“there’s a lot of shows on tv like that now.” blaze shrugged. apparently it was entertainment. “oh yeah, they fight, drink, scream, and cry, it’s so predictable.” she said. “there names are ridiculous too, that short one running around looking for beach is named snookie.”

“Well, I guess its good you found a better home. Its just weird being pulled out of another one.”

“well i get that. probably better than anyone. i’ve been pulled out of at least eight homes in the span of two years once. but this place is different, even if you don’t wanna be here, you’ll be able to find something to get you through it, you’ll probably be outta here before any of us if your people are good.”

“just be thankful it’s your hand and not your face, yeah?” she laughed, “a gauze wrap would definitely be more efficient. good thing i’m not a nurse. did they give you advil or any type of painkiller?”

“i’d have been pissed if it was my face, that probably hurts worse than in your hand.” she shuddered, just thinking about the pain she could’ve possible endured. “oh yeah, they gave me some GREAT pain killers, of course i can only get them through monitored use, but they make me feel like i’m on a cloud and then i sleep for four hours and no one complains because it’s a side effect. i should’ve split my hand open sooner if i knew it’d get me permission to nap.”

“oh. lucky you. most of us here, this is the best home we’ve ever had.”

yeah, he bet. it seemed he missed everything even remotely interesting. he did, however, wonder how she had managed to pull something like arson off in a place like this. “i used to celebrate it back when my dad didn’t nurse the bottle and give me black eyes as a present. but in again, that was a tuesday before he left. shit, there should be activities for people like us. preferably naps but it seems they don’t take well to that being an activity.”

“so your dad was a major dick too then, huh?” blaze was numb when it came to her past, or maybe it was a fake numb. she didn’t know, but all she knew was that it didn’t bother her anymore, she couldn’t change it and that was that. “i’ll probably just lock myself in the art room,” she shrugged. “i tried riding horses but the little shit threw me off, and then i got eight stitches.” the memory of it was clear as day. “they let me nap, but not as much as i’d like. i guess twelve hours of sleep during the day is considered depression.”

“Jeez, that sounds like a lot. I once had to get stitches, it really, really sucked. What happened, that you had to get ‘em?”

“yeah, i’d give it a ten on the how bad it sucked scale. oh, i fell off a horse. a stick went right through me. sliced me open good.”

“fell off a horse.” blaze’s tone was monotone. she was always monotone, unless it was her sister or someone she really enjoyed speaking to. “wanna see?”
