queer is a slur, grow up

‘Queer’ was reclaimed as an umbrella term for people identifying as not-heterosexual and/or not-cisgender in the early 1980s, but being queer is more than just being non-straight/non-cis; it’s a political and ideological statement, a label asserting an identity distinct from gay and/or traditional gender identities.People identifying as queer are typically not cis gays or cis lesbians, but bi, pan, ace, trans, nonbinary, intersex, etc.: we’re the silent/ced letters. We’re the marginalised majority within the LGBTQIA+ community, and‘queer’ is our rallying cry.

And that’s equally pissing off and terrifying terfs and cis LGs.

There’s absolutely no historical or sociolinguistic reason why ‘queer’ should be a worse slur than ‘gay.’ Remember how we had all those campaigns to make people stop using ‘gay’ as a synonym for ‘bad’?

Yet nobody is suggesting we should abolish ‘gay’ as a label. We accept that even though ‘gay’ sometimes is and historically frequently was used in a derogatory manner, mlm individuals have the right to use that word. We have ad campaigns, twitter hashtags, and viral Facebook posts defending ‘gay’ as an identity label and asking people to stop using it as a slur.

Whereas ‘queer’ is treated exactly opposite: a small but vocal group of people within feminist and LGBTQIA+ circles insists that it’s a slur and demands that others to stop using it as a personal, self-chosen identity label.

Why?

Because “queer is a slur” was invented by terfs specifically to exclude trans, nonbinary, and intersex people from feminist and non-heterosexual discourse, and was subsequently adopted by cis gays and cis lesbians to exclude bi/pan and ace people.

It’s classic divide-and-conquer tactics: when our umbrella term is redefined as a slur and we’re harassed into silence for using it, we no longer have a word for what we are allowing us to organise for social/political/economic support; we are denied the opportunity to influence or shape the spaces we inhabit; we can’t challenge existing community power structures; we’re erased from our own history.

I’m not kidding. Cis LGs have literally taken historical evidence of queer people’s involvement in the LGBT rights struggle and photoshopped it to erase us:

Pro tip: when you alter historical evidence to deny a marginalised group empowerment, you’re one of the bad guys.

“Queer is a slur” is used by terfs and cis gays/lesbians to silence the voices of trans/nonbinary/intersex/bi/pan/ace people in society and even within our own communities, to isolate us and shame us for existing.

“Queer is a slur” is saying “I am offended by people who do not conform to traditional gender or sexual identities because they are not sexually available to me or validate my personal identity.”

“Queer is a slur” is defending heteronormativity.

“Queer is a slur” is frankly embarrassing. It’s an admission of ignorance and prejudice. It’s an insidious discriminatory discourse parroted uncritically in support of a divisive us-vs-them mentality targeting the most vulnerable members of the LGBTQIA+ community for lack of courage to confront the white cis straight men who pose an actual danger to us as individuals and as a community.

I know I keep reblogging posts like this, but it matters to me. “Queer is a slur” is a TERF dogwhistle, and a lot of the younger generation is falling for it. Please pay attention to history and ask questions about who’s behind social media campaigns that undermine the inclusivity of your community.

I rarely see anyone in the ~discourse point out that “gay” is a reclaimed slur itself. Somehow everyone is aware that it used to mean “happy, chipper, festive, sociable, flashy, lighthearted, etc,” yet no one stops to realize how utterly offensive it is to use that word as a euphemism for mlm. It requires zero additional context to see the blatant effemiphobia and realize it’s entwined with the STILL PERVASIVE stereotype of mlm as frivolous, loud, carefree dandies (see also: nancy boy, nelly, sissy, light in the loafers, and about a hundred other slurs that are still recognizable as such). It’s considerably worse if you do add some context – before it came to specifically mean “homosexual,” it was also used more broadly to mean “sexual deviant” (mlm, literal prostitutes, figurative sluts). This isn’t petty hair-splitting about ancient history, either. It was aggressively reclaimed circa the 1950s, and frankly, the fact that it had already lost its venom by the time YOU popped into existence just proves how successfully a term can be reappropriated by the people it’s meant to marginalize. The reclaiming of “queer” has already happened, too – the only people debating its merits at this point are either screaming into the void that is Tumblr, or taking an edgy stance in a classroom discussion at the college where they’re majoring in, you know, QUEER STUDIES. Trying to give the term back to bigots is as misguided and pointless as trying to get a “gay is a slur” movement off the ground. Yes, it is; that’s the point; welcome to the twenty-first century.

Exactly this. I *have* known people - mostly of older generations - who do not like being identified by the word queer. They have other more specific/less triggering words they want to be called. And that’s fine! The ideas of what to call ourselves has been a discussion the community has had forever. As a previous person said - just about everything that a non-heterosexual person could identify with is a reclaimed slur - and so if someone does not want to identify with a particular word that’s understandable.

The difference between that and the discussion which usually happens when someone says ‘queer is a slur’ is that people like the anon above are trying to take the term away from other people rather than suggest a different codifier for themselves. They are trying to turn an umbrella term for a larger community into a specific instance of oppression so that they can shame the people using it.

The kinds of people trying to police the language around queer do not want to include certain kinds of people into their LGBT politics - and the word queer forces them to do that. It was never about personal identifiers.

Differently from Anime, Seto did not see the last duel of Atem and Yugi. He is waiting for Atem to come back from the underground. Seto believed his victory. However, he never appears. Instead of him, YUGI does show up.

The creator Kazuki does not depict any furthur scenes after the last duel, so I was thinking about what Seto shall think when he sees Yugi showing up. Imagine, if Yugi got to tell Seto that Atem is gone, that should ve torture to both of them.

If Seto could be at the last duel, or, at least had a chance to say goodbye to Atem, it could be a different story from DSOD.

I wish to draw the another story of Seto and Ishizu and depict the excavation of the millenuim puzzle. And also how Seto knows Atem’s name.

Tanjiro

Lives in the mountains for the rest of his life because he loves the peace and quiet, but will bring his kids often downtown to meet with uncle Zenitsu and aunty Nezuko

Kids are kinda scared of Zenitsu cause he’s so noisy and hide behind him

Firstborn is a boy, but he will have a lot of children

Sometimes cries at a strange time and place, tells people it’s for no reason at all, but it’s actually because he loves his family so much and can’t picture his life without them

Hand-crafts toys for his children and tools for his wife all the time

Spends at least a brief amount of time with each of his children and listens to their aspirations and dreams with interest

Piggyback rides all day all night

Throwing kids in the air because they find it hilarious and giggle a lot

Tucks them up at night and gives them forehead kisses

Zenitsu

Lives in the town suburbs with Nezuko

Will only have daughters. A lot of them. Probably 4.

Screaming and crying simultaneously every time he talks about them

Gathers all of them in his arms protectively and continues to scream

Every time Nezuko mentions how they will marry well because they’re indeed very beautiful, he gets triggered. The air around him starts to crackle.

Inosuke

Lives in a hut in the heart of the mountain

Has no idea how to be a parent

Something weird and small is following him around all the time, it kinda looks like him

Annoying, can’t keep up, always needs saving

Predators often think the baby is food. Predators end up sliced in pieces.

Baby ends up being a daughter. A very stubborn one.

They end up fighting each other for 10 hours a day. Fights end with blood and heavy breathing. There’s a lot of yelling.

Daughter loses fights up until one day when she wins and he’s silent for a week

She later finds him pig assaulting a tree, tears in his eyes. She doesn’t ask him why.

Tanjiro’s firstborn gets stuck in a snow-drift at some point and Inosuke’s daughter ends up saving his sorry ass.

Tanjiro’s son is enamored

Genya

All babies magically calm down when he’s around

He definitely finds it very weird, but doesn’t say anything about it

Tries to lull his baby to sleep, ends up falling asleep before it

Babies sleep all over him throughout the day, but he’s fine with it. He can remain perfectly still for hours if he has to.

Protec™

Probably great at singing lullabies

Doesn’t mind playing with pink and glittery stuff

Wakes up every day, trying to convince himself he really has a family that loves him

Openly aggressive if someone hurts his kids

Sanemi

Will try to train all his kids for battle from the moment they can walk

Thinking about their future makes him nervous so he holds them close and sighs, promising to be there for them no matter what

Kyojuro

The most fun dad ever

Drops everything to spend time with his kids, no matter how important his task is

Goes into wild places and teaches them how nature works and how they have to be in harmony with it

Always tells the most intriguing, cool stories at night before bed. Kids make him tell more and he never refuses. It always ends up very late before anyone falls asleep

Has unnecessary amounts of pets in his house, always shelters strays and kids love it

Gets incredibly sad seeing any of his children fight and never says anything about it, but they notice and apologize to one another and to him

A just dad, every game and every chore is done and assessed fairly

Uzui

Has at least 8 kids

Probably has favorites and it shows

Forgets birthdays, sometimes names

Mostly annoyed cause there’s less time for sex and it’s inconvenient around so many kids

Devoted tho

Will do anything for his kids

The great amounts of love he receives from everywhere makes him very, very happy

When he’s surrounded by this warmth, he’d forget how annoying kids are most of the time and he’d find any of his wives right away

Iguro

Secretly hopes none of his kids look like him

Only first one out of two does so he’s only semi-bitter

Feels very guilty and sorry to put Mitsuri through pregnancy both times

Is extremely anxious for 9 months, falls ill with worry while she’s near labor date

Mitsuri ends up taking care of him and thinking it’s very cute

Labor goes smoothly every time because she’s strong, but he can’t help the worry

Is constantly fascinated with the very concept of having kids and that they love him unconditionally

Ready to die for them any time

A harsh and strict dad

Self-loathing intensifies after he’s being harsh and strict and he goes to Mitsuri’s and his room, where he can be privately upset about it

Himejima

Externally, calmest dad in the history of calm dads

Internally, in eternal agony over past memories of personal failure concerning kids

Spends a lot of time trying to banish fears that some events might repeat and thus punish him for his failures

Will protect his children with his life, of course

Loves hearing them laugh or just being noisy around him

Smallest daughter loves sitting in his lap and babbling to him about tiny bugs she’s seen in the forest

Sometimes she’d bring said bugs in her hand and place them on his palm so that he can feel them and tell her what he thinks

Most of his children dream of life in the city so they all end up living there except the smallest daughter

Her love for her dad and nature is too strong so she remains with him and looks after him till he’s old

Eventually marries, but she and her husband still live in his house

Tomioka Giyuu

Giyuu's haori was almost torn to shreds during the decisive battle [against the Demons] but Nezuko mended it so beautifully. The original memento of a fabric, however, had been reduced a lot. But now most of the fabric have been restored, Giyuu-san was so moved he sent Nezuko so many gifts (kimono, Western clothes, hair ornaments) that even Zenitsu considered him as a rival.

Giyuu was also befriended by Uzui and his family, it seemed, and when Uzui's child was born he was allowed to hold the baby.

After the battle, Giyuu went into coma and was in a dangerous state, so everyday Nezuko, bringing his mended haori, called for him to come back. For a while it was also not known whether Tanjiro and Shinazugawa would regain consciousness due to their critical state.

Kochou Shinobu

Shinobu's pet goldfish was named Fugu. She wanted it to grow healthy and full of life.

She wouldn't admit it, but she was a natural [airhead] so the names she brought up for Kanao first included Suzume* (a bird), Hakobe* (a plant), Kamasu* (a fish), Tanago* (a fish), Tobiko* (fish roe), among the unique names she came up with.

When Kanae opened the papers with said names on them, she froze for a while. Her face broke into such an "EH?!" expression that even Aoi couldn't smoothen things.

"What's so funny?" Shinobu got a little pissed, so the upset Kanae just smiled and sweated as [Shinobu] folded [origami] cranes, balloons and rabbits while [Kanae] put out the papers with unique names on the floor. When Kanao was about to pick up the paper with "Kamasu" on it, Aoi, displaying karuta-like speed, replaced it with another paper.

*T/N: suzume = sparrow, hakobe = chickweed, kamasu = barracuda, tanago = bitterling, tobiko = flying fish roe

Rengoku Kyojuro

[Kyojuro] has a sound mind that was not easily distorted by any circumstances. He could talk to anyone, young or old, male or female. Sometimes people were afraid of him because they feel as if [he and them] weren't looking at each other even though they were looking at each other.

He sometimes didn't listen to what people say (he was the type of person to reach conclusions quickly) but was sensitive to the subtleties of people's emotions, so he was very caring. Due to this, he was well-liked by the other Pillars.

As with the case with Tanjiro, despite conflicts from differences in the way they treat each other, [Kyojuro] never hold it against the other [person] and was able to respond quickly with a smile again. He was also quick to change his mind. There were many people who can't keep up with him due to him being too fast. He was a bit of an impatient [person]. He also ate his meals quite fast.

Uzui Tengen

Three of the nine [Uzui] siblings died before they even reached ten years old due to overzealous training. The remaining six were forced to kill each other on their father's orders.

They were forced to fight each other, not knowing who they fought as their heads and faces were covered with masks, and Tengen only realized his father's trick in dismay after he had killed two of his brothers.

Even though [Tengen] told of their father's crazy idea of leaving only the strongest children, his remaining brother felt nothing about killing their other two brothers. Tengen, who turned his blade away, then left the village with his wives without fighting his brother.

For a while it became a habit for him to say he was going to hell, but he stopped after Makio got angry with him, Hinatsuru cried, and Suma bit him.

He continued to anguish over whether he should have exterminated the Uzui clan, but he couldn't bring himself to kill his father and brother.

Tokito Muichiro

On the time [Tokito] lost his memories and resembled his brother's mannerisms, he was happy his brother had protected him. (The people around him got a healthy dose of his toxic speech though).

He was harsher with his words, but he knew he, who was more absentminded than his sensitive brother, was the one with tougher nerves.

Even before he entered the Demon Slaying Corps, Tokito could sleep soundly no matter if there was a tempest or a thunderstorm, and he never lost his appetite.

After the decisive battle [against the Demons], Tokito's crow became thin and sickly, though Tanjiro's crow comforted her, and eventually they became husband and wife.

Kanroji Mitsuri

As a young lady of her age, [Mitsuri] was nervous about the opposite sex, but she especially liked Iguro, who exchanged letters with her and was exceptionally kind to her. There were times when she wanted to confess her feelings to him, but because of the trauma of her marriage interview and her misunderstanding that Iguro was kind to everyone, she was unable to tell him how she felt. In fact, the only person Iguro was particularly kind to was Mitsuri.

There were times when she would ask Shinobu for advice about love, but since they were both oblivious to romantic love, their exchange of letters turned weird. (Shinobu's love advice was like a research thesis, mentioning brain response, heart rate, blood pressure, etc).

After joining the Demon Slaying Corps, she was often praised, and was very happy to have friends, senior and junior colleagues. However, as her colleagues were killed by demons one after another, the smiling and cheerful Mitsuri sometimes couldn't stop trembling with anger and sadness.

Iguro Obanai

Iguro had always been concerned about his surviving cousin, and when he asked around to find out what happened to her, he found out she was living a comfortable life with her remaining fortune, had married and had children, and was living happily.

This was unbelievable to Iguro, and he was terribly surprised and shocked at the same time. It wasn't that he shouldn't be happy, but he feared and envied his cousin's attitude continuing to live in luxury in the house where the tragedy had occurred, as if nothing had happened to her, regardless of how the fortune had been acquired, or her lineage.

Iguro didn't like to eat much because it was too much trouble. However, he felt happy whenever he saw Mitsuri eat delicious food. After eating with her (but not together), he was able to work up an appetite and eat more than usual.

Shinazugawa Sanemi

[Shinazugawa] became the embodiment of "the red ogre who cried"*.

He was the type of person who would do anything, even if it means dying, being hated, or be ostracized as the bad guy, in order to protect the people he cared about. He was so blunt, easily misunderstood, and was too hasty to act, that even the Flower Pillar, Kocho Kanae, was worried about him.

He was the same with Genya, a person who didn't plan anything to make himself look good and wouldn't care about what others thought of him.

He and Iguro hit it off well from their very first meeting, though their taste in the opposite sex were at odds, since Sanemi wasn't good with women like Mitsuri. (Himejima cried though since he knew Iguro and Mitsuri liked each other. Shinazugawa was quite dense at matters of love though).

Himejima Gyomei

Himejima was raised in a temple by his relatives. His father died of disease, while his mother died while giving birth. As if misfortune kept piling on him, he got a fever when he was a child and was blinded as a result. However his will to survive overcame all adversities.

They lived poorly so he was thin, but he was blessed with a tall height and strength to do manual labor. Since childhood he was a mature and calm person who helped everyone in need.

However, in spite of his blindness, he had a keen sense of "sight", so that when some mean people tried to throw things at him or make him fall, he was able to avoid them. He was often branded as a liar due to this.
