Discussion: Is Billy Elliot a queer film?
Better: Is Billy a queer kid?
A lot of people see the film as a giant metaphor for being queer. My friends and I watched the film last night and as @thealmightyemprex @the-blue-fairie can attest, the film hits you much harder when you were a queer kid yourself.
However, Billy many times attests that he himself is not a "puff". He is somewhat attracted to the daughter of the ballet teacher. And you can argue that they only put Billy's gender non conforming friend because they wanted to point out that Billy was not like him. He wasn't queer just because he wanted to do ballet.
But then the end has him performing in Matthew Bourne's rendition of Swan Lake, who's infamously known for being a very gay centric retelling of the classic ballet. Maybe that's the way the film chose to convey that although doing ballet doesn't make you gay, Billy grew into a talented gay young man.

Billy Elliot and self expression. Billy Elliot and going against societal norms. Billy Elliot and working harder than the people around you to prove yourself. Billy Elliot and having to prove you belong. Billy Elliot and masculinity. Billy Elliot and wasted potential.

it’s interesting my sort of osmosis knowledge of this movie was that it says billy is straight even though he likes ballet and that was very progressive for 2000 or whatever. but I feel like the movie is very deliberately agnostic about his sexuality? Like my read was there is sort of a potentiality w both his male and female friend but he declines overtures from both of them bc he’s not actually interested in sex yet. He’s like I have a ballet audition so I don’t really care about that right now
