Carlos Manuel de Céspedes - known in Cuba as El Padre de la Patria - declared the island’s independence from Spain in 1868, rising his own flag at La Demajagua and freeing the enslaved men who fought with him.

He lost 3 of his sons in the war he began, and was executed by Spanish forces in 1874- twenty four years before Cuba gained independence from Spain, and twenty eight years before the United States attempted to annex it. Murió antes de ver una Cuba soberana.

Wanted to draw this based off a Cuban joke I remember hearing once before;

A Czech, after the fall of communism in Checoslovaquia visited Cuba. He tells a Cuban, "Czechoslovakia is free now. I can criticize the government all I want and I dont get arrested." The Cuban then responds, "Cuba is free too. I can criticize checoslovakian government all I want and I dont get arrested either."
