MIDNIGHT ON JANUARY 1ST, 1986 could be best described as exciting and eventful as the dull, quiet town of hawkins, indiana was now lit up with exceedingly impressive firecrackers.
everyone had their new years' resolutions they hoped to seek, even if they hadn't actually thought of fulfilling their promises. michael wheeler, the awfully behaved teenager boy next door, did seek to fulfill his resolution, however. after el moved away, mike had gotten smitten with another girl at school by the name of the one and only, y/n l/n.
they became friends first-hand after mike volunteered to tour small-town hawkins with her since she newly moved to the small city from another small city. soon after, she began to hang with the gang, where she fit in quite easily without taking el's place.
everyone except y/n knew of mike's feeling for the girl, so el was rarely discussed in courtesy of mike's newly developing feelings for y/n. after asking around though, y/n finally came to the conclusion that mike and el were once lovers which was quite frankly the reason he was so hesitant about speaking of her.
but mike wasn't in love with el anymore, oh no he wasn't. y/n was the one for him, he was sure of it. she was the only girl who could occupy his mind, the only girl who he'd volunteer to spend his time with, the only girl who he let in through the front door and didn't need to hide in the basement.
so mike grew some balls and dialed a number which he knew by heart, hoping the girl would be up at the hour.
"hello?" she answered, no grogginess heard in her voice. mike felt relieved he didn't disrupt her slumber.
"hey y/n, happy new year!" he cheered over the phone, hearing a small giggle from the other side.
"why thank you, wheeler! any resolutions this year?"Ā she asked, curling the phone cord around her finger. she too, had a confession to make on this new year and deep inside she wished mike had the same. either way, this would be the best time to tell him and if he denied her, she'd just hang up and ignore him forever.Ā
"yeah actually! well, more like a confession? like my resolution is to con-"
"i get it mike. me too actually," she said coolly
"really?"
"yeah, really- wait i have an idea. on the count of three, let's let it all out, yeah?" y/n purposed, biting her lip anxiously at the thought of what she was doing.
"y-yeah, okay!"
"1...2... 2 and a half, 2 and three quarters, 2.99, THREE!"
STARGAZING WASN'T something you did often, but on certain nights when you felt called to, you found yourself wrapped comfortably in sae-byeok's arms while staring at the bright masses of wonder that laid way beyond the two of you.
at some point your gaze on the sky broke when you were reminded of the beauty who was so close to you, her porcelain skinned face freckled with a constellation that was even more beautiful than the one painted across the sky. mindlessly, you began gently caressed her cheek, rubbing your thumb over a number of freckles on her soft skin. she didn't mind this at all.
with her eyes still on the stars, sae-byeok took your hand off her face to kiss the back of it gently and holding it in her own after. she glanced at the sky for a few more seconds before turning to you, a small smile threatening to tug on the end of her lips when she glanced upon the girl she loved the most.
"you look very pretty tonight," she expressed softly, reading your awed expression before looking ahead of her again.
you also went back to gazing at the sky, but only in a poor attempt to ignore the mass amount of butterflies swarming in your stomach at the moment. you glanced at sae-byeok from the side of your eye before responding, "you look very pretty as well."
from under the stars you could really see the definition in her cheekbones and how perfectly her short raven hair sat on her head. you could see her short eyelashes and how the batted every so often because of how bright the skin and stars were. you could see her lips which sat in a straight line, being licked every so often because of how chapped they were due to the weather. you could see how actually beautiful your girlfriend was, even though you are constantly reminded with her presence.
"sae-byeok," you called, which got her attention immediately. she blinked at you when you paused for a second before continuing.
"i love you," you said softly, and with smile.
there was a pause. not an awkward pause or even a pause of uncertainty, but just a pause. sae-byeok was usually equipped with remarks for almost anything you said, but this time you left her unusually speechless. she only squeezed your hand in response, before once again, looking at the stars ahead.
"i love you too," she said lowly yet loud enough for you to hear. you nodded your head slightly before resting your head on her shoulder. she held you tighter, pressing a kiss on your forehead before adding,"meeting you is the best thing that's ever happened to me."

kang saebyeok whoās not very fond of touch but would wish to be nowhere but in your arms during the early morning moments where her body is numb from her legs intertwined with yours and going dizzy with your scent when she buries her face into your shirt. morning rays making her eyebrows furrow as you play with her hair and pepper her forehead in kisses. you give a quiet and sweet āgood morningā to which she simply hums, not get ready to face the world outside of your embrace. everything just feels right in this moment, the world could be crushed to dust and she would be none the wiser as you continued to run your fingers through her hair at that delicious pace that only you could do. this was all she ever needed, this swelling feeling in her heart that was already burst at the seams and overflowing. and all she had to do was ask.
