what you must understand is that clay and bloberta both see the other person in orel... in the blessed union bloberta watches passively as clay indoctrinates her child against her; she moves through their relationship with the subconscious understanding that orel will turn out exactly like his father and doesn't feel as though she has any power to change this. she's wrong, and she still should have tried to be a positive support for him, but given her circumstances it's understandable. clay meanwhile abuses orel in a specifically (trans)misogynistic way with the most obvious example being in nature part 2 when he calls orel a sissy for "whining" about his drinking, something we know bloberta also (rightfully) gives him a lot of shit for. clay is subconsciously aware that he is parentifying orel and expecting him to fill a role of emotional support that he at one point expected of both his own mother and bloberta, so when orel begins to pull away and stand up for himself clay sees bloberta's exhausted contempt reflected in him.

i’m just complaining at nothing again but the way the moral orel fandom has conditioned so many people to add stuff like “don’t get me wrong, i still think bloberta is an evil demon from hell!!” under so many genuinely thoughtful analysis posts about her out of fear of clay fans responding with stuff like “don’t forget she’s evil!” “you know she’s still a bad person too right? did you forget how unlikable and terrible she is?”…like i’m sorry but people’s blindness to their own misogyny is rotting their media literacy so bad, ESPECIALLY when the oppression of women through the Christian heteropatriarchy is such an in-your-face theme and driving force of conflict in the show like 😭

sometimes i remember the moral orel “i’m a church” scene and i have to take a breather. because like what do you mean this is a child failed by every single adult who was meant to care for him and who has had the only thing that made his life feel meaningful (attending church) taken away from him finally realizing that the only one looking out for him is himself, and that the institution he considers holy is only so because of his own faith and passion
