Calling All Kings - Sakuma && You?
The way that Rei spoke stood out to even someone as generally unobservant and forgetful as Yuuka, to the point where she didn’t think it’d leave her mind even after they went their separate ways. He couldn’t have been much older than her…he looked to have maybe two or three years on her at the most, and yet he spoke in a manner that seemed to imply he was many years her senior. His manner of speech kind of reminding her of the kind old geezer who had taken her in after the death of her parents. Even so, Rei wasn’t that old…was he?
“Mm…that’s true. Only a weirdo would go hanging around a graveyard at night,” Yuuka responded bluntly, unaware that her comment likely implied that Rei was the type of weird person she was talking about. Her lax smile indicated that she meant no harm with the comment, and held out his flier to return to him once she was finished scrutinizing it. She had gotten her point across, more or less it seemed.
She couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow upon hearing his motive for wanting to organize a nighttime meeting with as many kings as possible present. So he wanted a truce of sorts between the kings? An alliance? Even someone like her felt as if it wasn’t entirely possible considering the circumstances. It seemed like new kings were popping up here and there all of a sudden due to whatever was going on with the slates so even if he managed form alliances with some, would there ever be a way of truly reaching everyone? It sounded like an impossible task. Certainly not one she was up to. “Oh, I see…you know…don’t you think you kinda speak like an old geezer?” To her, that was the most important topic at hand. Why did talking to him make her sound like an infant? If he really was a vampire or ghoul or something, then he was probably super old. But this guy seemed pretty human to her, aside from the strange, night time graveyard thing.
“Ehh, it’s your first time? Yuuka’s too! I’m Yuuka Teramoto, the White King. It’s nice to meet you, Rei-chin!” Out of of habit, she reached out one hand to take his in a handshake, but then reached out her other hand as well, lightly gripping his hand with both of her own. This was her usual strategy at the many handshake events where she interacted with fans, although it somehow made its way into her day to day life. Not that she shook many hands outside of work or official business in the first place. The small concern she usually might’ve had about how she addressed her elders wasn’t present here at all. If anything, she figured a youthful nickname would make him remember that he wasn’t a sixty year old man. At least, she didn’t think he was.
His question brought her little difficulty. Not a single thought seemed to go through her head as she answered him with the same brutal honesty that she had used all evening. “About that…there’s nothing! As a king, I don’t really have any aspirations or something. I just want to continue with work as normal and be loved by lots of people! But that has nothing to do with me being a king. I don’t want being a king to get in the way of the things I love…or something like that,” she explained with an odd twinkle in her eye, unable to stop herself from thinking of how much she enjoying being on the stage. She didn’t mind being a king, but if it got in the way of being an idol, then she was sure she would’ve hated it. Fortunately, there were no problems of that sort so far.
Yuuka’s words were like an arrow that pierced at his heart. His eyebrow twitched only slightly but that kindly smile of his remained intact. The smile she wore alluded that her words were free of malice. She appeared to be the type that spoke her mind without reserve. He didn’t hate that kind of thing though. This honesty was a little amusing even though it stung a bit.
Rei accepted the flier without complaint but didn’t comment on her views of those who casually hung out in graveyards.Though just as he accepted it he balked once more as she commented on his speech. Ah, that.. It had become a bad habit of his.. How did he explain it? It had arisen from him just being overly dramatic and making excuses for himself.. Maybe it was just better to keep up with the ruse.
“Well.... It’s because my body isn’t as youthful as it once was.” There was a bit of a strained undertone to his words as he tried to explain the reasoning behind it. “I am.. quite old, actually.” Old was just his code word for being overly clumsy. There was nothing wrong with his body.. The only thing that was off was his equilibrium at times.
“R-Rei-chin?” By this point he was completely taken aback by her behavior. First there was her brutal honesty, now her overly friendly nickname, and the way she clasped his hand in both of hers. Rei still hung strong to his earlier assessment that she was a good person at heart though her upbringing was questionable. The nickname wasn’t something that bothered him much and at the moment there were more pressing matters to address.
Once she’d finally gotten around to answering the one question he was most curious about he found that for once in their entire exchange he wasn’t surprised. Even so, he still went quiet for a moment as his mind thought over it. “So we are the same then.” Once more he put on that friendly smile of his, a wide grin that surely flashed off his pearly white canine teeth.
“Truth be told, I am very happy with my life and don’t want anything to get in the way of that. I feel the same as you.. But that’s why I needed to do this to protect this city. I have a lot of adoring fans whose smiles I wish to preserve. But.. I am glad to find a King who won’t be a cause for alarm in this city.”
