i was going through your gifsets of your tvdu ocs and they're so beautiful <3 but it also made me think: nevaeh ends up with damon, and she has a good relationship with caroline, yes? but damon was less than civil to caroline, giving he fed on her and compelled her to forget before she got turned into a vampire. how do nevaeh and caroline navigate that part of their friendship? would it hurt caroline to see nevaeh get with someone who has deliberately hurt her? and if so, how would nevaeh respond to that?

I want to make one thing clear: I hate Damon Salvatore. Not only am I Stefan stan, but genuinely Damon is one of my most muster characters of all time. He has a feature on my most hated characters Pinterest board.
So the simple answer to this is that I made Nevaeh before I had seen TVD and had only heard of it. I still hated Damon, in fact I hated the entire concept of TVD, but I loved what I knew about Caroline and the potential tragedy was (and still is) too delicious for me. Like Nevaeh & Damon get a happy ending not because I think Damon deserves it but bc I think Nevaeh does.
I tired switching her love interest once I watched for real but the tragedy of it all was just TOO GOOD, I could not imagine her with anybody else as her main love story or ending up with anyone else. Like I have made myself cry multiples times over the years thinking of all the tragedy and heartbreak that comes from her relationship with Damon. IT’S SUCH A GOOD STORY.
So originally, when I was still a new writer, the plan was that Nevaeh wouldn’t find out about all that until she had already fallen deep in love with Damon and Caroline had grown to tolerate him. Like season 3/4, she would find out and break up with him until Caroline saw how miserable they both were and encouraged her to get back together with him. Terrible idea, I know.
The new plan is that none of that stuff really happens because Nevaeh protects Caroline. Nevaeh and Damon met the year before, had a sexually charged friendship (never more because she was still in love with Jeremy). Although she does not know how truly awful and dangerous she is, she grows to suspect after she reflects on their meeting while in Paris and so when Caroline starts talking about this guy, she realizes who it is. She goes with Elena to see Stefan because she knows Damon is a Salvatore, and tells him to stay away from Caroline. He agrees, as long as she agrees to hang with him instead.
Caroline is initially upset by this, after all she feels like Nevaeh stole her man. But she gets over it pretty quickly as they never actually had anything and she knows how much Nevaeh would never do anything to purposely hurt her. Essentially, Nevaeh takes Caroline’s place as the spy but without the sexual assault and threatening. Damon already likes her from when he knew her, he finds her amusing and she knows how to play his game.
I also think it’s a really important skill as a storyteller to be able to separate a character, even a protagonist, from your own feelings and belief. If I were to make very character have the exact same opinions as me, that’d be pretty repetitive and boring.
My solution to how much this was to make Belle Gilbert. My other OC who dates Stefan, loves Caroline, AND gets to torture Damon. She’s essentially an overpowered self-insert for wish fulfillment, while Nevaeh’s story is about actually telling a story (not to say I don’t think Belle’s story is not also interesting).
