Imprisonment and Wrath

Roscidia took to her home when she could, her homeland. The place in which she could wholly be herself and the eyes upon her would still be filled with adoration. She had spent what felt like ages pondering the trajectory of her life and if she wished to return here on a more permanent basis. She hated her other home. She hated most of the people in it. She despised and reviled the inhabitants of Stormwind’s provinces in private. Disgusted by them all. There were very few people she held love in her heart for, and her heart grew ever colder with each passing day. Of course, she hid these feelings.

She had left for Belore’anthil when the Horde and Alliance thought fighting in Stranglethorn again was a just course of action. And each day she prayed that so many people would just. Fucking. Die. Many people who would call her friend didn’t know how badly she wished for them to expire and rot. She wished that their faces were still decaying beneath the jungle’s humidity. She wished that the Alliance would have lost, and that seas of them were dead now. But, alas, they all returned home and she pretended, well enough, that she was happy for it.

A very worthy pretender.

There was a beast lurking within her flesh that Roscidia had starved for years, pretending. As she stood in the darkened forests, within a halo of the pine trees, she imagined how it must look. Emaciated. Rabid. Feral. She apologized to it countless times, apologized to herself countless time for denying it. However, on this night, she would feed this beast and she would enjoy it. No unintended outsiders were present, only her guard, only her aunt, only herself, and only a prisoner.

“Here.” Pryliese grunted, shoving the prisoner forward upon his knees. “No one of note. This one would have been overlooked, unimportant to Stormwind no matter how much he wishes he wasn’t.”

“That’s a lie!” He snarled in return, which only earned him a swift kick in the face by Roscidia.

“Let me tell you about lies, oh nameless one.” Roscidia purred, crouching down to be eye level with this man. Human, he was. Handsome, green. His blue eyes were wide with terror, that auburn hair he had, which she could imagine being elegantly disheveled on most days, was wild and slick with sweat and a little blood. Those chiseled cheeks were red, and those lovely lips quivered. Young and useless he was. Just a pretty face. “A crown betrays a race of people and then the other half of that race has the audacity to proclaim loyalty to it anyways. A crock of shit. This world isn’t fucking fair. And, in the words of the previous warchief; this world is a prison. And you willingly prance about in your prison’s uniform, proud to protect and serve it as if it would give a shit if you died. No one is looking for you, nameless one. Aside maybe the girls that’ll miss swooning over you. Everything. You. Love. Is. A. Lie.”

Roscidia did not draw out his death. It did not take hours for him to succumb to its call. Several seconds after she saw the recognition in his gaze, she jammed a dagger into his throat and wildly sawed away, very nearly detaching that pretty head from his shoulders. He died in, perhaps thirty seconds. A minute maximum. And when his blood was spilt and his spirit wandered away from his corpse, she rose to a stand again. She, too, was covered in his lifeblood. “Feed his corpse to the hounds. Melt his armor down.”

Several hours after his death, Roscidia and her aunt stood upon the shores of Belore’anthil. The sun was just starting to bruise the night sky. Dawn was approaching. They had talked idly for a while, yet none of it was important. For the last hour they had stood in silence, finding peace in the company of family. As the crest of the sun began to rise, only then did the older of the pair speak. “What are you going to do, Roscidia?”

A long moment of silence followed. Perhaps Roscidia just wanted to hear the lull of the waves, or hear the wolves call in the forests. Perhaps she only wished to be quiet. Or, perhaps, she was finding the right words to say. Either way, that long silence was broken eventually.

“What I have always done, dearest aunt. Wage war in secret.”

“So tell me how noblegarden works again?”

“Well, it is customary for noble houses to paint and hide eggs for their people. Inside the eggs are candy, coins, and some nobles even hide a scrap of cloth inside which the people will trade in for corresponding finery. Pink for dresses and black for slacks.”

“And in Saltwood you do it differently?”

“Well, we do hide eggs with treats…”

“But..”

“Well, it is a tradition that we carried with us from Duskwood. We hide them and the children have to find them before they are stolen. Some children take it upon themselves to act as the guard or knights for the others, searching for the thief. They’ll dress up as their favored knight complete with wooden swords.”

“Who would steal treats from children!”

“The egg goblin of course.”

“By the light.. this I have to see..."

“I saw him! I did. He went that way!” Bare feet against wooden floorboards tattled the arrival of the guard. Dozens of them this year, older now. Grizzled vets that knew where to search and patrol.

“What if he eats us?” Ah, a younger one. The wobble in their voice betrayed them, perhaps even exposed this being their first year on the force.

“He don’t eat children, I think. Only chocolate.” Came a response, wise and loud. “And we can’t let him do that.”

“Yeah!”

“For the people!”

“FOR THE CHOCOLATE.”

“Andy no.. that aint right, you gotta just say for the people. It is the way.”

“Oh, right. Okay. FOR THE PEOPLE.”

The goblin’s fat feet walked him along the barn door’s framework. A thick wooden beam that had become his hiding place also gave him the ideal view of those coming and going. He’d wait here until the guard circled around and then he’d run, just far enough ahead where they could see him and find his dropped eggs but never catch.

“Five minutes.” A sweet voice pulled his attention from the older guards he had to outrun.

Ah, his lovely accomplice and wife. From his position, he could see the top of her golden head as she searched the barn for eggs with his sons. They dropped her hands and raced ahead, searching crevices for wooden eggs filled with treats while she remained in the doorway, cleverly blocking the view of outside so he could rest.

They were getting faster.

“MOMMY!” One of the boys stood just below him, mouth agape and arm lifted so that one finger could point over his wife’s head to where the goblin hunched, fat egg in hand. Him. He was the goblin. Shit. “G.. go…” His boy stuttered and he almost laughed. Was that fear or..

“RUN BOYS! Before he steals your eggs! Get the guard.” Aelin wailed, twisting to the side so the boys could flee the barn. She didn’t look up but paused beneath him. “Time is up.” She warned before she fled the building herself, one arm lifted. “I saw him… in the barn.”

That was dirty! She could have said he had run out the back. He was getting too old for this.

“Do you concede?”

Sylvrinne ran her fingers over the little note that was tied around the neck of the mannequin. It took her long enough to even notice the note, between the letter still within her grasp and the gift that was before her eyes. Her fingers drifted from the parchment to the dress, feeling the beautiful fabric; soft and sturdy. Oh, it was properly overwhelming. She had never before been treated so kindly, so softly. And never before had she been gifted with things so beautiful. Flowers were more than enough, in truth, yet this had exceeded all of her expectations.

But, did she concede?

She picked the tiara up and placed it upon her head, she made her way to the mirror and studied how it looked upon her. It was more beautiful than she deserved, yet it was given to her anyways. And she wished to honor that gift with every breath. And so, she carefully removed the tiara and placed it back where it once was. She had time to plan, time to plot. She shut the door of the walk in and left the room entirely.

She passed by servants and greeted them warmly, exiting the estate to find Yuuya out by the garden. Her younger, yet freakishly taller brother was as still as stone, and he only seemed to animate when she was close enough to speak her request. “Do you think the smith and the armorer can be bothered with a request?”

Yuuya seemed unamused, those angry, ruby eyes stared out from beneath the brim of his tricorn hat in scrutiny. “I imagine they can, if you pay them like you did the last time. What is it.” His voice held hardly any tone, any emotion. She was used to this, by now.

Her answer did not miss a beat, her good mood could not be swayed. “Good, good! I have a special request, I need it done quickly!”

Yuuya and her discussed the details of this request, and she had him walk with her to the room she shared with Ithildir. Yet, she made him wait outside while she penned a note for her beloved to read, a note for Yuuya to bring to him while he did her bidding.

A Promise to Tonight

Atop Sylvrinne’s nightstand sat a lone letter with her name elegantly and gracefully scribed. It held no seal or indication as to who wrote it, but Ithildir felt confident that she would know his hand writing the moment she saw it. Within it was a simple note that read as follows: My heart, Business has called me away and I must meet with the Duchess’s architects. While I wish you’d have joined me, I understand that this longing is something I must become used to in the coming months. Regardless of how lonely I will feel among our people, I look forward to seeing you when the sun has set. I wish I could express my longing for you, but I am afraid by the time I finish this letter I would have insulted your dear cousin’s architects with my tardiness. . . and run out of ink. Instead, I will simply ask that you take my words to heart: You will not win this war you have waged. With love and longing, Ithildir

Do you really think you are ready to brave such a place, Astrid?

Skadi’s tone was careful, yet still firm. It was later in the day, and the pair shared a deer for supper. Astrid tore into a flank as she stared into the fire, nostrils flaring in a soft sigh.

It had become easier. Easier to stomach the memories, easier to swallow the feeling of wrongness and the eternal paranoia of deception everywhere she went. It wasn’t often she had to convince herself everything around her was real, and even when she did, Varsen was always quick to catch her if she’d slipped. The thoughts earlier had plagued her. Haunted by the dreaded ‘if’ and the equation of potentials. But could she go it alone? Search where the others didn’t or failed to?

The white hot burn of fire pokers in her skin were brought to the forefront of her mind suddenly, sharply, the cold bite of bloodstained shackles pinched at her wrists. The thoughts were banished as quickly as they could be.

“We were taken home on the wings of the Kyrian and told to look elsewhere, but...” she paused, licking her fingers clean and tossing the bones into the fire.

“But?” Skadi chimed, licking her paws with a soft rumble.

“It felt incomplete. All of it.”

“You died, Astrid. The others searched fruitlessly with leads given to them by the dead that did not know his face or his soul.”

A flat look was given over the flames as forearms were propped on her knees.

“You presume to know his soul so well that you feel he may be in Bastion.” It was the Denmother’s turn to return the flat, dubious tone. An ear swiveled back and Astrid snorted, shaking her head slowly.

“I do not presume to know anything, Skadi. If the body in the ice was someone else by gods know how, I am of a mind to believe he is alive. Misplaced. If others are ready to give up or are lost then I will go where they cannot.”

Crimson hues stared and burned into the side of Astrid’s skull.

“Is that not what your husband said, the very same, before he stormed off to Helheim wether anyone went with him or not?” Skadi rumbled. Amusement threaded in her tone despite the topic at hand. Astrid paused, lips thinning. It was, wasn’t it?

“Truly, you are a match made by the gods. But I will ask again... -can- you, Astrid?” Skadi’s chin lifted to stare at the Vikingr across from her from over the bridge of her nose in that show of noble arrogance. The Huntress fidgeted in her seat and she took a short breath.

“I can.” She eventually agreed, chin bobbing in a short nod.

“Will you take anyone with you? Will you even -tell- anyone?” Skadi chuffed, tongue laving over her bloodstained maw.

“I will consider it with the Lady.. but she cannot be left alone in the City. Varsen or Dame Stormcrow can stay with her.. or both. She has her sisters.. so she will be fine with one less Shieldmaiden milling about I think.” Astrid rumbled offhandedly, listing off her thoughts aloud.

“Heavens, at least you will tell someone of your horseshit antics.”

“I told Varsen I wanted to go to Helheim and bring Guarm home.” Astrid quipped quickly, frowning.

“Where, pray tell, did that get you?” The wince was real, a recoil to put a shotgun kick to shame.

“Which leads to the next question.. will you tell your husband where you go?” Another recoil, and Astrid reached up to rub the side of her face. Uncertainty bled between the pair before Skadi snuffed it out.

“Tell him and he may not let you leave, or do not and face his anger and worry when you return. Where oh where did his wife run off to that is not this little hideaway or his bed? Or, alternatively, have the Lady tell him after she likely hardly lets you leave and face his anger, worry, and hurt when you come home with either something or nothing..” Skadi began, and Astrid frowned. Again her head bobbed in a nod. Rosemarri told her she can talk to her any time, so perhaps she would do that first if anything but to gain insight on a plan that sounded insane.

“A better plan.” Skadi agreed after a moment. “Speak to her on the morrow. For now, rest.”

Time doesn’t feel the same anymore.

What is the balance between firm and gentle? Docile and wilful? Cruel and compassionate? I think I find it, I think I see the line where I need to walk as Lady Sunshield but when I step close to that path I am surrounded by upset. What would this world have me be? Broken? Unsure forever? It cannot be this way, I cannot contort myself into a doe and continue to march forward. I cannot lead...

I miss my father.

It was not Syred that came to meet me but his odd servant Silitharius. The elf was not as docile as he had been upon previous meetings, taking his role as negotiator seriously I suppose. Truth, I did not know what to negotiate but there were questions that demanded answers and at the very least there was a wrong that needed to be corrected in some way.

Ithildir’s ire was dangerous to my family. A crime had been committed in my name, the abuse and attack on a noble whose house serves Stormwind the way they do is unthinkable. I know should the court act on a charge such as that, I would have no defense for it was I that sent Ithildir to Syred’s care.

Syred, in the five years I have known him and trusted him, I had not known there were two of him. A father and son with similar images but different temperaments. Silitharius mucked through clearing that matter up for me but it left so many more questions. Who was the one that helped me as a confessor? Which helped my knights? Which is the one I see in Stormwind? No matter, it was clear both needed to be avoided. An off-balance agreement had been made finally, silence for a confession and all should be well. Ithildir will hear from Silitharius who the guilty party is and I will make sure my lips are sealed against sharing Syred’s secrets. Secrets exposed by a single name. Do I think this heralds the end of this nonsense? No. It’s a break and mock peace but I will take it. @sinsofaconfessor @sparrow-of-omasdorale
