“No, you’re right; you’re not cute at all,” Matt hummed in agreement, tapping a note into his phone for later. “You’re completely and utterly adorable, Av.”

“No recording. Make me laugh more often, then you’ll hear it more often. Here’s your reward.” She gently smooched his cheek now and returned to her more composed state.

Well, that was kind of a surprise, and he placed a hand over the point she’d smooched, eyes wide like those of a rabbit watching a car draw closer.

“No-one will ever believe you did that unless I preserve the smooch forever,” he murmured, pouting dramatically. “I’m gonna need some of your formalin.”

“No. I don’t need you to smell like my workplace. It’s enough that I smell of it constantly.” She sighed. “Just keep going, you might soon earn another one.”

“You most certainly do not smell of this place all the time,” he tutted, raising a brow. “You smell of... whatever that shampoo is that you use. Mostly. It’s nice; what is it?”

“Mhm, it’s even in the dictionary.” Looking up, he tapped his lip with his thumb pensively. “Avienne Bellamy, proper noun, a very adorable and intelligent lady who happens to work with corpses. See also, Gothic chic.” Of course he’d noticed the blush. He wondered how much more red she could get.

“You stop it…!” Her voice got slightly more high-pitched and she indeed blushed harder. A rare display for her indeed. Even though, Avi smiled, it was all in good fun. “You’re cute!”

A dramatic gasp followed her accusation, his eyes widened and his hand flew to his chest as he affected the most offended gape-mouthed expression. “I know!” he finally said, indignant, high-pitched.

And then he smiled and tapped her head gently with his phone in lieu of a big folder to smack her with. Such a big kid, Matthew was.

Avi then started laughing. And it was quite a pretty, melodic sound. So rarely heard…

“Good! If you didn’t knew, I’d be almost offended…”

Patting her shoulder sympathetically, he shivered with disgust, quite involuntarily. Not that he was squeamish, of course. Just that it was a really nasty sensation, something in the semi rotten innards of some poor corpse spewing bile or partially digested mush or some other such pleasant liquid at you. “That is what happens when you mess with a body that’s been sitting in a hot, damp bathroom for a day or two,” he said gently. “But at least you had the good sense to be wearing scrubs and gloves and a mask at the time, right?” He was making an assumption, not having been present at the time. “Want me to take you home? Take a nice shower?”

Chuckling, he opened the passenger to his car and held the umbrella over her head so she wouldn’t have to suffer even a droplet of rain as she clambered in. “Mhm. Well, if you want me to take you to my pokey wee flat, I’ll make you dinner. And if you want to go to the kitties at yours, I’ll order us a takeaway. Your choice.”

“Hm…” She hummed thoughtfully as she got inside the car and sat comfortably. “Your place then. I like your cooking.”

Putting on a seatbelt, Avienne smiled to herself again. Maybe this day wasn’t going to be so bad after all.
