i cannot keep quiet about this anymore.

if you're in the US or Canada and interested in learning a language using a free app please get a library card and download MANGO. it's very good and extremely free with a library card (there are many public libraries and universities using the service, so make an account and use the search feature here to find out if there's one near you).

mango currently has 72 available languages and dialects (that's right! different courses for french or canadian french! spanish or latam spanish!). it's set up basically like an audiobook with text. the idea is that the narrator explains the words while you read, and you repeat after them or say the translation out loud when prompted. there's a daily review where you go through flashcards. you can also use the flashcards at your leisure and create your own. at the end of each chapter there's a listening comprehension quiz and a reading comprehension quiz. i cannot emphasize how effective this all is. and it's free with a card.

if you're not in the US or Canada and/or looking for something more like duolingo (don't use duolingo btw tldr they fired translators and replaced them with "ai"), then try BUSUU! it only has 14 languages atm but the lessons are really descriptive and effective. it also has a feature where you can correct other people's open-ended speaking/typing exercises. you set your fluent languages, and exercises by people learning those languages will appear in your feed for you to correct. you can even add others as friends! and, much like duolingo, it has a streak and leaderboard system for you to strive for, minus the guilt-tripping owl.

busuu is free (you watch ads to unlock lessons and they're all skippable after like five seconds), although it also has paid premium/plus versions (i don't use the paid version—the language courses are available for free, and the ad system is Really unobtrusive).

hi!! this is suddenly getting a LOT of notes out of nowhere lol so i thought i would provide some updates and clarification now that it's been over a year since i made this post :)

for starters, i still highly recommend both of these programs for several reasons, one of the main ones being that duolingo is getting more and more useless every day, and outright paid alternatives aren't accessible to casual learners or people who simply can't afford a subscription like that.

let's start with mango :) i love mango! i have absolutely no issues with anything about mango. the one thing i did want to mention, bc someone had brought it up in the tags and i realized i may have mistakenly worded my original post, is that mango is Not provided by all libraries in the us/ca. just like any other service, libraries decide what to offer based on their population and funding. i've heard of some providing rosetta stone (which i have never used and know nothing about, but i'm pretty sure it's older than i am so it might be good haha), and some having no language services beyond some textbooks etc. so, be sure to use the link above to check if your library has it.

also, the reason i had said us/ca specifically is bc that's what their website said, but good news! someone said that their library in new zealand used to offer mango!! so, if you have a local public library in any country, look around on your library's website or ask your librarian to see if they offer it. you might be pleasantly surprised, so give it a shot! and remember, public libraries want to cater to you, so if you want something they don't have, ask for it! they might not even know about the program and would be happy to look into it for you :)

now for the other stuff. in the case of busuu, in the fall of 2024 (several months after i made this post), chegg (the owners of busuu since 2022) announced that busuu would introduce a "conversations" feature for english and spanish learners, which would use ai to allow learners to practice their target language with a chatbot. additionally, at some point in the summer of 2024 (again, months after this post was made), people started noticing ai-generated videos/audio in the later sections of the italian course. the explanation from busuu support was that the course designer had generated the content, and busuu was implementing it to see how users felt about it. i don't know if this is still in use as of now.

that all being said, busuu ads currently like to talk about their "ai-powered practice sets," which i'm fairly certain is just chegg trying to benefit from the word "ai" when it's really just a regular vocabulary study. in terms of the "conversations," i believe this is entirely optional and only available in the english and spanish courses. the only other "ai" i know of in the program is a relatively new "busuu bot" that will correct your open-ended exercises just like a native speaker would. i've only really seen it in the wild when correcting english-learners' exercises, so i don't think it's being used in most courses, and this still has the leeway of allowing a native speaker to still correct the exercise or even report the bot's answer if necessary.

that's just some stuff i wanted to bring up about busuu! if you know anything about the duolingo bullshit (which, if you don't, please please look into it and stop using duolingo Now.), you should notice that while there are a few areas where chegg is trying to implement ai to enhance the courses, i have Not heard of them firing translators in favor of making people correct ai slop. i cannot effectively emphasize how detrimental this has been to duolingo and its courses without turning this into a 20k essay, but yeah.

if i ever hear of something like that happening at busuu, i'll add to this post again, but as of right now, the original courses are intact and the chatbot is 100% optional (or nonexistent, depending on the target language). and, hey, remember i said they were looking to see how users felt about the ai stuff in the italian program? if you see any ai bullshit in a busuu course, send in feedback and explain Exactly why it upset you. the more data they have on unhappy users, the more likely they are to change their tune before chegg turns busuu into duolingo 2.

that's all :) tldr see if your library has mango, ask them about it if they don't; busuu seems to be tentatively moving towards ai but Only if their users let them get away with it, so don't let them! okay love you bye!!

Whenever I see my kudo count go up by even just one (1), I'm ecstatic. Like, literally grinning ear from ear because it means someone not only sat down to read my shit, but they also liked it. Giving kudos is basically a way of bumping fists and going like "eyyy, that was some good work right there. keep it up!"

Kudos aren’t as expressive as comments (which are wanted btw, so go ahead and make a writer's day by leaving one. and you will make their day, I promise you), but they're still worlds better than quietly clicking in and out of a work you liked because surely my kudos/comments won't make that much of a difference anyway, right? I don't normally post about Canadian politics here, but this issue is really important to me. If you use this site as an escape from stuff like this (which I wholeheartedly empathize with), just ignore this post.

But if this issue concerns you, the least you can do is reblog and spread the word. Anything helps, and the more noise we make, the better.

The Canadian Senate recently passed bill C-22, An Act Respecting Lawful Access, aka the "Lawful Access Act," that will require an ambiguously-defined group of electronic service providers (which may include all internet service providers and potentially other companies such as Google and Apple) to keep a record of all user metadata for up to a year at a time and provide the government a backdoor to access this record on demand, no warrant required.

For obvious reasons, this is a serious and disgusting breach of privacy. The government already has the legal authority to request a record of a specific suspect's data if they get a warrant, but now they want the ability to do this to everyone, all the time, with no prior notice. Not only is this unnecessary overreach, it also creates a massive vulnerability — just imagine all the information hackers will gain when (not if) these databases get breached.

While the government has already softened some aspects of the bill (proof that resistance works!), it still requires the creation of dangerous backdoors and data records. The new Liberal majority government seems to be trying to rush the bill through and get it passed without any further changes before the summer break, which we don't want to happen.

What you can do as a non-Canadian

Share this info and make any Canadian friends you have aware of what's going on. The issue of online privacy (or lack thereof) is one faced by many countries around the world right now, and it will only stop getting worse when we the people say it stops. Let's set the precedent that we want more safety and privacy online, not less!

What you can do right now as a Canadian

Write to your Member of Parliament: You can find your representative in the House of Commons by selecting your province/territory on the map (linked below) and finding the MP who represents your riding. You can send them a (politely-worded) email (and a physical letter never hurts) informing them of your concerns and asking them to reject bill C-22.

Sign Petitions: Petition e-7416 is an official petition to the House of Commons. It already has over 9 thousand signatures and will remain open until September 22. While the government has no obligation to honour a petition, we can force them to acknowledge just how unpopular this bill is.

These dudes are fucking legit.  They don’t just show up one day in court, either, they actually make friends with the kids and let them know they have a support system and that there are people in the world who care about them and will always have their back.  And less important, but also cool, is that the few times a couple of them have come into my cafe, they’ve been super friendly and polite and when I told one of the guys that I noticed his Bikers Against Child Abuse patch and wanted him to know how awesome I thought he was because of it, he got kind of shy and blushed and said, “The kids are the awesome ones, we just let them know they’re allowed to be brave.”

Bikers Against Child Abuse was founded in 1995 by a Native American child psychologist whose ride name is Chief, when he came across a young boy who had been subjected to extreme abuse and was too afraid to leave his house. He called the boy to reach out to him, but the only thing that seemed to interest the child was Chief’s bike. Soon, some 20 bikers went to the boy’s neighborhood and were able to draw him out of his house for the first time in weeks.

Chief’s thesis was that a child who has been abused by an adult can benefit psychologically from the presence of even more intimidating adults that they know are on their side. “When we tell a child they don’t have to be afraid, they believe us,” Arizona biker Pipes told azcentral.com. “When we tell them we will be there for them, they believe us.” ( Article)

Bikers come from across the nation to watch over and take shifts for these kids. And the best part is once you’re adopted into this family as a BACA kid, you’re always one. Even when you’re 40 and the perp gets released from jail, they’ll come meet with you and find your best options for avoiding the person and maintaining the life you’ve built for yourself. Once a BACA child, always a BACA child. In Florida, there’s 100% rate for identifying the perp based on the child’s testimony. Why? Guys? This post changed my life. I saw this post. Forever ago. And thought it was only in america… and wished desperately that they could help me. But then I saw it again, during a bad episode, and checked their site. They aren’t just in the USA

They’re in Canada as well and probably other countries. I met and talked with a native guy who runs the place near me. His name is Shaman. I got in, and I’m considered a BACA child now. Despite being 17, turning 18 when I talked to them. They spent time with me when my abuser was over, they gave me therapy resources. They give you something called a ‘level 1′ where they go to your house with as many bikers as they can, i shit you not a solid 20-40 bikers came from even out of province, and met me. I got to choose my biker name and I got a vest with patches on it and my name on it. They all hugged a Teddybear before giving it to me, and told me if I ever felt the BACA bear was running out of love, to give them a call and they’d refill it for me, and then I got a ride on one of their bikes. Just a day or so ago I went to an annual party with them and they we ate food one of them cooked and had a lot of laughs. 

I’ve never felt as loved as I did being a part of the BACA family. They also gave me dog tags with the names, and phone numbers of my 2 workers.  So I can call them whenever I feel scared. 

BACA is an absolutely wonderful group that will do everything in it’s power to help any child whos been abused. 

And it doesn’t end when you’re 18 either. As long as you get in contact/get your level 1 before you’re 18? you’re ALWAYS a BACA kid. I’m 18 now and they still invite me to parties, ask me if I’m okay, and are there for me. They’re still trying to find me resources for therapy. 

BACA has changed my fucking life. 

I hope you all can read this, and reblog it knowing from someone who fucking been with them, that they are absolutely amazing.
