People hating on Rose because she isn't perfect is annoying, but it gets SO misogynistic when people hate her because of Adrian and pretend Adrian is perfect.

The difference in the way people treat male and female characters is staggering. Male characters are regularly put on pedestals in a way female characters just aren’t. When men do wrong it’s forgivable because *trauma*, or - as is so often to case with Adrian - another character (usually a female character, Rose in this case) is responsible. Sometimes their bad behaviour is just outright ignored, people will insist on a view that is directly contradicted by the text.

When female characters ‘do wrong’ they’re hated (I put ‘do wrong’ in quotation marks because it can mean something as ridiculous as Rose, a 17/18 year old girl who’s been raised in almost total isolation, not having a perfect understanding of everything that’s wrong in her society from the day the book starts! Even plots where she learns better aren’t allowed, she has to be perfect from the beginning!). Look at the difference not only in how Rose and Adrian and treated, but Lissa and Adrian. Lissa is so often hated for taking advantage of Rose, even though Rose very much plays a part in that and Lissa learns better. For that matter, look at the difference in how Lissa and Dimitri are treated. I never see anyone talk about how often Dimitri dismisses Rose’s feelings in the early books, or how often he lashes out at Rose instead of talking about his feelings.
