there are ways to slide into a new town with little fuss and no second glances, but alice doesn’t care to be good at it. all she wants is a little fun, and if it takes knocking a tosser down a few pegs, then let it be. when she goes home later, she’ll be her aunt’s quiet companion and they can puzzle out what it means to start over again. now, alice wants to get to know this place.

❝ ‘fraid not. but you can always go the route that all great queens do, ❞ the ghost made a grotesque ripping sound between clenched teeth as he dragged his thumb across his neck. but that twisted delight that rocked on the curve of his bottom lip simmered into a half-moon grimace. he plucked at the tip of his knife with the very thumb he’d gestured with.

❝ friendly, huh? ❞ a sickly sweet chortle growled from the back of his throat, ❝ i’d hate to meet the bastards in your life if you think that’s friendly. ❞

❝ oh, you’re full of jokes, are you? more excellent luck. ❞

her body hadn’t adjusted yet to this new state of being. the bends in her limbs still carried pooled exhaustion and every vertebrae seemed to grind painfully against the ones next to it. but slowly, ever so gradually, that old decades long weariness began to be leached away, replaced with something else. a something alice couldn’t quite find a name for it. more than anything, it made her want to spring upon the next creature that moved.

❝ not a death that suits me, thank you. and no you wouldn’t. they were rotten bastards and i’d like to be rid of them forever. but instead.... ❞ she trailed off, squinting. would that she had her own sword to toy with. ❝ where have i gotten myself now? have i died? ❞

WONDERLAND → alice’s pronouns

out of all wonderland’s intrinsic peculiarities, the way its residents refer to their savior monarch is one of the more recent and unexpected.

even during her initial visit to the realm, alice had been pinpointed as the ultimate slayer of the queen of heart’s symbol of terror and destruction: the jabberwocky. tales of this slayer depicted a plucky boy with long, flaxen hair swinging the sword that brought the jabberwocky down. wonderlanders began to relay tales of this new, curious little visitor in terms of the “the boy who will save us all”. alice, considering herself clearly a girl, is most confused. it continues to be a matter of confusion for her during her first two visits. by the third, however, upon slaying the jabberwocky and being (oddly) crowned honorary queen of wonderland, alice has grown used to it. there are matters that do not matter so much after so long, so she lets them have it.

anyone who is a wonderlander will be either familiar with or accustomed to describing alice as a “he” or a “boy”. while alice does not consider herself a boy in the slightest, she accepts it. it’s easier to do so after being told of the jabberwocky legend. all in all, just another curious thing.

A guilty pleasure. A time she can ensure will be silent of the noise around her on a daily basis. The beach—even in the dead of summer—is vacant of traffic as the moon beams the ocean waves with her glow. Without the warmth from the sun, a hoodie keeps her flesh from prickling with a chill.

The stars dance above her and Genevieve envisions she’s up there, dancing to the muted music of the night. Fireflies and the moon herself joining in. But just as she’s about to fully engulf herself into the trip, the sense she’s not alone anymore brings her back to Earth. A neighbors dog cuts the silence and confirms her suspicions. ‘ Hello ? ’

any night she’s able to sneak down to this ghostly stretch of sand and replace the clamor of her thoughts with the whispers of waves is a better one. her bike dropped into the camouflage safety of lanky dune grass, alice can creep up to the wobbly line where sand meets and sit. hours can crawl by and she’s none the wiser. scooting forward or backward to keep herself at that edge of the tide is part of the draw, the entertainment.

she likes this spot best at night, when it becomes the meeting place of natural noise and organic silence. until it very decidedly doesn’t. the one-two punch of both hound and human inserting themselves into her bubble of solitude is enough ruin the mood. she’s tired and she wants some fucking peace — can’t other people have the same idea on a different schedule?

unseen, her eyes roll. no chirped greetings here. she’s not happy about this.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Children from another world depose a tyrannous witch-queen at the behest of a talking lion, and are declared the realm’s rightful rulers. The realm’s citizens accepts this without major protest because the lion said so.

The Wizard of Oz: Child from another world deposes a variety of tyrannous witches with the aid of a talking lion, reinstates the realm’s rightful ruler, then just sort of shacks up with her indefinitely. A lot of the realm’s citizens are honestly a bit weirded out by this, but go along with it because it beats the alternative.

Alice in Wonderland: Child from another world variously aids and antagonises a series of tyrannous queens (some of whom may be witches) with the aid(?) of a talking housecat, and is subsequently crowned queen herself for no real reason. The realm’s citizens mostly don’t notice because this sort of thing happens all the time.

something about the man’s aura absolutely bleats with power. there’s no question; alice can feel it, both different and similar to what she’s felt follow her her whole life thus far. enough notes of shadow and dust motes floating in the streams of light where it peaked in to make the flaxen-crowned girl stop and wonder a little.

what they’re in possession of isn’t the same, though. can’t be. but it’s awfully close.
