i apologise for the length in advance but! this person has made me much less forgiving and it drives me insane when ppl say asians are treated as practically white. i immigrated from southeast asia to a white country later in my life and near-immediately had to tolerate someone with some choice beliefs who treated me like a token asian friend (leave me alone???)

white person with a self-assigned japanese name (pet peeve i have btw. no one ever talks abt it but why is it always japanese or korean? It Could Mean Nothing). not much by itself, but with everything, yk

thought i couldn't be queer bc i was asian and gave me the dirtiest look when i said so. supposedly very progressive in terms of lgbtqia+ awareness

also didn't think i could be mentally ill! also as a person who is supposedly very aware and progressive in this area

applied good-student and strict parent stereotypes to me and proceeded to go trauma olympics on this imaginary me's trauma for a whole year. and i mean genuinely, they would bring up how much worse their everything is compared to my supposed life. i would give them nothing and they would still keep going

i was a good student BECAUSE i was asian

felt entitled to, as the most innocent and oppressed person ever, to take their anger out on everyone disimilar to them including me, not even mentioning their tendency for "humorous" violence

when ppl think of asians, they often think of the East (n that's probably where this person got their stereotypes for me) but i often feel voiceless being so nearby and yet ignored, and i am happy this blog exists 😭🫶

oh these are all extremely good points anon!! this is a PSA for all non-Asian people to please STOP giving yourself Japanese/Chinese/Korean names! and the 'Asians can't be mentally ill/queer' stereotype is 100% prevalent.

I can't say I agree on the name part. When people give themselves a name, they usually go for a name they like. You have to admit Japanese/Korean are the "most likeable" Asian culture, even if it's stereotypes/biases/ whatever. As an Asian myself I don't see this being any different than me giving myself an English name or calling myself Blooky.

I believe even some (old) Asians believe "Asians can't be queer/ mentally ill" stereotype... I've seen things like "This wasn't a thing before the evil western came!" and "You just want to be different" but like, the type of people exist everywhere on the planet and aren't limited to Asia. Somehow only we got the stereotype.

I work with kids and sometimes we have to do safety lessons with them about like, not telling strangers on the internet your home address or something. And sometimes the kids wont understand why, so you have to impart upon them that, well, some adults want to hurt children. And thats kind of difficult to do, because you have to beat around the bush, both because you dont want to scare them (while still making them understand how serious it is) and because you might lose your job if you explain it too straight forward.

Luckily, for some reason, the villain of one of the most popular franchises with children for the last 10 years happens to be a serial child murderer. So when a kid asks why they shouldnt trust strangers, instead of hand wringing and humhawing my answer out, I can just say "we dont always know when a strange adult has good intentions with children, or when they are William Afton."
