Soapboxing in Iowa                                                                               With the Iowa caucuses less than six months away, the Iowa State Fair was destined to be an important political event. The cancellation of the Iowa Straw Poll—typically held by Republicans in early August—placed even greater significance on the fair.   Overlapping at times, Saturday's political gathering hosted Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump and Rick Santorum. Iowans say they can't recall another election cycle when so much political star power arrived at the fair on a single day. Robot Revolution                                                        

Robot hotels, robot villages, robot’s first day at work. Robots are big business in Japan.

Bloomberg photographers visited the country’s first “robot hotel” – the Henn na Hotel – which opened on last week in the Dutch-themed Huis Ten Bosch amusement park in Sasebo; Yaskawa Electric Corp.'s Robot Village complex in Kitakyushu, where the company manufactures industrial robots; and Pepper robot’s first day at work at a Mizuho Bank branch in Tokyo. 

At the opening of Japan's Robot Revolution Initiative Council on May 15, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe urged companies to "spread the use of robotics from large-scale factories to every corner of our economy and society." Backed by 200 companies and universities, the five-year, government-led push aims to deepen the use of intelligent machines in manufacturing, supply chains, construction, and health care, while expanding robotics sales from 600 billion yen ($4.9 billion) annually to 2.4 trillion yen by 2020.

Artisans Angkor                                                                The Artisans Angkor mill in Siem Reap, Cambodia, employs over 1,300 people in the production of traditional Khmer handicrafts including: silk-making, stone and wood carving, laquering and painting. Little Beetle, Big Problem                                    Since the late 1990s, the grain-of-rice-sized mountain pine beetle has attacked and killed more than 700 million cubic meters of pine trees in the inland forests of British Columbia, Canada’s top lumber-producing province. That’s equivalent to about 700 million standard telephone poles. “The current estimate is that 60 percent of mature pine in B.C. has been killed or will be killed by the end of the decade,” Rodger Hutchinson, a West Fraser vice president, said June 5 in a Bloomberg Television interview in Vancouver. Hyundai Heavy Industries

Hyundai Heavy Industries is the largest shipbuilding company in the world. They employ 26,000 people in production, including research & development and administration. 

Photographer SeongJoon Cho visited their 1,500-acre shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, which stretches over four kilometers, according to the company’s website. Their products range from container ships to bulk carriers, submarines and destroyers.

Circle of the Sun                                               

Japanese national flags are printed at Tokyo Seiki Inc.'s manufacturing facility in Numata, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Tokyo Seiki, a Japanese flag manufacture based in Tokyo, manufactures various flags including national flags and banners with the TOSPA brand.

Japan’s economy grew at a faster pace than initially estimated in the first quarter, on a stronger pickup in business investment and inventory buildup. Gross domestic product expanded an annualized 3.9 percent, more than a preliminary 2.4 percent, according to revised data from the Cabinet Office on June 8.

Border Town                                                                      In Rio Grande City, named for the river that splits the U.S. from Mexico, footpaths cut from the brush by drug-smugglers and illegal immigrants have a new look, rehabbed into family-friendly hike-and-bike trails. The town of 14,000, seat of the poorest county in Texas, put $80,000 into the project, and is spending $125,000 on a new park. It bought a vacant building for $1.3 million Monday that will become the new City Hall. Everybody knows where the money’s coming from, because they’re everywhere -- the border-patrol agents who crowd the most popular taco trucks at lunchtime and get their shirts starched over at Comet Cleaners.         Now that the state has authorized $800 million to ratchet up security on the Mexico line, more troopers are on their way to deliver another shot to what might be the biggest stimulus program this needy part of Texas has ever seen. Inching Closer to a Deal                                                    Euro-area finance ministers will meet for the third time in a week on Wednesday to try and secure an agreement to avert a default in Greece. With a week to go before the country’s bailout expires, a deal appeared within reach after Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras signaled he was ready to end a bitter five-month standoff and reach agreement with creditors to unlock aid. While hurdles remain -- including votes in the German and Greek parliaments, and figuring out how to pay the International Monetary Fund -- analysts say a solution will be found. Making Bidis in India                                                                          Bidi cigarettes made in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, India. India’s government has raised taxes, required graphic warnings on packages, and barred smoking scenes in films as it seeks to reduce tobacco use and fight related illnesses that kill a million Indians annually. Paris Air Show 2015                                               

As aviation leaders mingle in Paris for the industry’s largest expo, much of the talk centers on a Boeing Co. plane nicknamed “Mom” that doesn’t even exist yet.

The tag is an acronym used internally at Boeing for “middle of market,” a jet that would be sized to fit between current single- and twin-aisle offerings and succeed the discontinued 757. Dry Times                                                                      On the ground and above Lake Mead in Nevada in June 2015. The record drought plaguing California isn’t limited by lines on a map. Arid conditions caused by dwindling rainfall and snowpack are stretching across the West. The Southern Nevada Water Authority is building a three-mile, $817 million tunnel under Lake Mead to retain access to its Colorado River supply as the reservoir declines to 40 percent of capacity. While droughts are common in the western U.S., climate change has led to longer and more frequent water shortages in recent years. Jeb Enters the Race                                         In an attempt to follow his brother and father into the nation’s highest office, former Florida governor Jeb Bush announced Monday that he's running for president of the United States. The announcement ends a months-long flirtation that began in December, when Bush jolted the rest of the potential field by signaling he was serious about running. Bush then unleashed a furious fundraising effort aimed at collecting $100 million in the first three months of the year, leaving little doubt about his intentions. Devastated Kathmandu                                 Nepal’s government estimates reconstruction costs from April’s earthquake alone will exceed $10 billion, equivalent to about half of the country’s $20 billion economy. Nepal is one of Asia’s poorest nations, with a gross domestic product that’s smaller than any of the 50 U.S. states. Clinton’s First Campaign Rally                               Hillary Clinton launched the second phase of her presidential campaign on Saturday, drawing heavily on her personal story as she outlined her vision for shared prosperity for all Americans. After two months of relatively low-key outreach to voters and donors aimed at reintroducing her to the country, Clinton appeared at her first campaign rally, on New York’s Roosevelt Island, with Manhattan and a wide blue sky as a backdrop and, at the end of her speech, her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and their daughter, Chelsea, at her side.
