The thing is I do think that whether a character tops or bottoms is actually a character trait- not a personality trait, to be clear, but more like... Their preferences are aspect of characterization. The same way their favorite foods are, y'know?

For example I have an OC who exclusively tops because of trauma, another who exclusively tops just bc that's what they enjoy. These are both examples of characterization, just in different ways.

I don't think it inherently reflects their Dominance or Power or anything like that, not unless the character themself has a warped perspective. And I don't think that the bottoming characters are inherently emasculated or degraded because of this either.

I feel like it's such a slippery slope between "these are important aspects of the characters' experiences with their sexuality" and "sexual position reflects personality"

But it's very clear to me that most fans who have ship wars (over the same ship) only really care about the latter. They feel like the whole dynamic changes because they treat "top and bottom" like "boy and girl" in a very essentialist way, because they see penetration as a degrading act.

It's just all so silly and empty to me, because at the end of the day it's not really about characterization or exploring a certain dynamic. It's just about copying and pasting the exact same generic fandom tropes and arguing about who gets which ones (and sometimes about which character you're projecting yourself vs your desires onto). And they're all OOC anyway so why even argue?
