sae’s car was parked only a short walk away, and compared to rin’s chaotic interior, which was usually occupied with water bottles in the cupholder and his spare jerseys, his brother’s was incredibly clean and spacious.
everything in sae’s car was neatly organized. the dashboard was spotless (unlike rin’s, which was filled with happy meal toys you and bachira placed), his seats were pristine, and even the floor mats looked freshly vacuumed.
“… wow,” you said before you could even stop yourself.
he looked over as he closed his door.
“what?”
“oh! it’s nothing.”
“you said ‘wow’.”
“your car’s just really clean…”
“i clean it,” he stated bluntly. clearly to him, cleaning car interiors was nothing out of the ordinary.
“i can tell.”
the corner of his mouth twitched every so slightly yet again. a moment later, he started the engine. however, before putting the car into drive, he glanced at you. “seatbelt.”
“oh! " yeah, sorry,” you mumbled, hurriedly looking down, heat rushing to your face as you realized that you had forgotten to buckle. you reached for it quickly, but somehow the strap twisted awkwardly in your hands.
“it’s backwards,” he said impassively, giving you a look.
“… i know.”
a quiet sigh came from beside you as he leaned over the center console. his movements were calm and efficient as he untwisted the belt, then pulled it gently across your shoulder.
“there.”
click.
“thank you…!” you bashfully said, turning your head, intensely out the window.
sae proceeded to pull out of the parking lot and onto the road. the ride settled into an awkward silence (at least for you), broken by the soft noise of the engine and the occasional patter of raindrops hitting the windshield.
that’s when you decided to speak up. “uh… can i put my address into your gps?”
“go ahead.”
he tapped the navigation screen with one hand, the steering wheel with the other on the screen. you typed in your flat’s address, and as the route appeared, he glanced at the map for only a second. the car returned to the awkward silence it once was.
“… mcdonald’s on the way,” he said, breaking the silence.
“hm?”
he took a quick look at the clock on the console on the dashboard. 9:08 pm. “did you eat dinner?”
you paused before answering. “… no.”
“you skipped it?”
“i was planning on eating after i got home!”
he went quiet for another moment. then, without another word, he flicked on his turn signal, heading towards the mcdonald’s drive-thru.
“w-wait—”
“it’s on the way.” he said, nonchalantly, as if you weren’t a panicking mess in the passenger seat.
“i promise i’m not that hungry! besides, i can eat at home, and i have plenty of leftovers from last night. i need to finish them tonight, or else they’ll go bad!” you quickly rambled, hoping that he’d change his mind.
“…”
sae rolled down the window as he pulled up to the speaker. the employee greeted you two.
"hi! what can i get for you tonight?"
he looked towards you briefly. "what do you want?"
you immediately shook your head. "really, it’s okay."
then he looked back toward the speaker without hesitating.
“one mcflurry with cho oreo cookie.”
the order took less than a minute, and when you two reached the payment window, you started pulling out your wallet. however, before you could give him your coins, he had already tapped his card against the reader.
“i’ll pay you back!” you exclaimed in embarrassment. you knew that sae was well off, but the last thing you wanted was your friend’s brother, whom you met less than two weeks ago, to be paying for your food. not to mention, your first impression to him wasn’t the best; you were a drunk mess crying over your boyfriend for god’s sake!
“you don’t have to, it was only 340 yen.” he said as he handed you your mcflurry.
“i’d feel bad if i didn’t…” you insisted.
“you can buy your own next time.”
you blinked. what did he mean by next time?
“… next time?”
“if there is one.” his tone stayed even and unreadable as always, like as if he hadn’t accidentally implied there could be a next time.
the windshield wipers swept back and forth as the rain poured harder. what was supposed to be a 5-minute car ride (detour to mcdonalds excluded) has so far turned into a 9-minute wait in traffic. the car was yet again quiet. however, unlike last time’s awkward quietness, it’s more of a comfortable quietness. you’ve been munching on your mcflurry while stealing small glances at his face, which was focused on the road. at times, you wondered if he minded the silence… or if he preferred it?
another minute passes in traffic, and that’s when you decide to speak up again. “… do you want to play a game?”
he glances over briefly. “what kind?”
you brighten up, his interest gets you feeling bubbly inside. “like… a question game! we take turns asking each other questions— but not like twenty questions! i was thinking more like getting to know each other!”
“… sure.”
“okay! i’ll go first! " when did you start playing soccer?” you excitedly asked, feeling like a little kid who just got an invitation to a birthday party.
“one.”
“one year old? wow, that’s young! i don’t think i could ever remember what i was doing at one!”
he nodded once.
“okay… my turn’s over. you go now.”
he was quiet for a second before asking his question.
“when did you meet rin?”
“oh, easy! we met during our first year of high school! but we only started talking during the third term!” you answered confidently, as if you were proud to remember the memory of your first encounter with rin.
“and you two just stayed friends?”
“well, yeah! it took a lot of time and pestering for us to get close, though! we only really started getting close when he let me copy his homework… okay! my turn again,”
you thought for a bit, taking a bit from your soon-to-be-finished mcflurry. “hmm… where’d you go for high school?”
“blue lock high school.” he said without hesitation.
“whattt? really? oh my god, i went there too! how come i never noticed you? no wait, actually, how come i never knew rin had an older brother until now?” you asked without a care in the world.
“rin’s private. it makes sense he doesn’t bring up family much. and as for high school, i never cared to interact with my juniors.”
then, before you could even reply, sae spoke again.
“my turn.”
looking over to him, you noticed that he was still watching the road, expression as unreadable as always.
“…do you and my brother like each other?"
you choked at his question. did he just accuse you of emotionally cheating, let alone infidelity as a whole?
“what?!”
he reached over, keeping his eyes on the road and silently handed you a napkin, which you accepted with wide eyes.
“no! of course not! he doesn’t like me like that, and neither do i!”
“you look surprised.”
“that’s because it came out of nowhere! we spend a lot of time together, and we’ve been friends for a long time! he’s like a younger brother to me— well, maybe not brother, but y’know! familial or somewhat adjacent to that!” you rambled, feeling your face heat up at the accusation.
“mhm.”
“you don’t believe me.”
“didn’t say that.”
“but you’re thinking it! like, yeah, we have kissed once— but that was at the end of senior year, and we both didn’t like it at all! rin and i are just friends,” you groaned dramatically, hiding your face behind your hand. then, your tone shifted to a sincere whisper, holding up a pinky. “i swear on my life, sae.”
for the first time tonight, sae’s expression shifted. it was subtle, but for a second, his eyes widened, caught off guard by the use of his own name. he doesn’t think anyone has ever said it quite like that. the syllable sweetly rolled off your tongue, carrying a warm tone. you made his name sound so soft.
“… just friends?”
“yes, yes! nothing less and nothing more.”
you slump back into your seat, face still heated from the question. “so… why’d you ask?”
there was a brief pause before he answered the question.
“curious.”
“just curious?” your eyes narrowed playfully. “i don’t know if i fully believe you.”
“you ask a lot of questions.” he said, as another smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“that’s literally the game.” you countered.
the conversation gradually fizzled out after that, as sae pulled into the parking space of your flat. his car’s tires rolled over the wet pavement, headlights sweeping across the other parked cars, as he found a space near the entrance to drop you off.
“you’re here.”
for a moment, neither of you two moved.
“thank you,” you said quietly. truth be told, you were quite disappointed that you’ve arrived. was half of the ride awkward? yes, definitely. however, you enjoyed your time in the car with him, and you don’t know when you’ll have another opportunity like this. you reach for the door handle, opening his car door and hopping out, before hesitating and turning to face him, leaning into the car, looking at sae (who is currently in the car)
“wait! before you drive off, i’ll give you my number!” you nervously rambled, feeling the heat yet again crawl up your face. “… y-you should text me when you get home! so i know that you made it home safely!”
he stayed quiet, giving you the chance to hurriedly explain yourself.
“i mean like— you drove all the way here because of me!” you laugh softly, feeling embarrassed. “i’d hate for you to get into an accident on the way back after taking me home… especially with the rain going on.”
for a second, he simply looked at you, then gave you a small nod.
“… alright,” he pointed his phone towards you, already unlocked and ready for your number to be put in. “i’ll text you when i get home.”
“thank you… and drive safe, sae.”
you closed the car door gently and hurried to the entrance of the apartment building, turning back once more before going inside.
his headlights were still there.
sae waited until you unlocked the front entrance and disappeared safely into the lobby. only then did he put his car back into drive.

This episode is gonna be called "Cosmic connection" and it's just gonna be lost stars again. I wonder if we're still gonna have to do some challenges given by the sky king or something else this time. Mio and Luca finally get their first interhouse mission. So I guess we're just gonna redo multiple missions from the first time line based on this?
synopsis : The everwinter in the region of Snezhnaya leaves no mercy—not even to you. But luckily, your husband is there to keep you from turning into ice.
an: this was written before the initial character revealed. I used all source I can get to get a little bit grasp of Valeriy's character.
The everwinter in the region of Snezhnaya leaves no mercy—not even to you. Despite the enormous amount of clothes that had covered you, the cold somehow found its way to touch your skin. But luckily, the fire beside you is enough to prevent you from turning into ice.
You shivered at the cold breeze. You knew that the nights in Snezhnaya are cold and dangerous but you couldn't help yourself - not when the aurora borealis above you danced beautifully.
Captivated by the sight, you failed to notice a pair of boots beside you.
Well, the aurora is much more worth looking at rather than a pair of boots.
“It's cold out here. We should head back inside, my love.” your husband, Valeriy’s grounding voice called out as he placed his coat over your shoulders.
“Welcome back. How's your mission?” You asked, patting a spot beside you for him to sit.
He paused before answering, “The assassinators still managed to mingle their way during the meeting. If I hadn't stepped in, things would escalate dreadfully.” You've grown pretty familiar with the ‘assassinators’ he spoke of. His work pretty much revolved around preventing assassinations and protecting Fatui’s clients.
Valeriy is a man who valued strong manners and respect. You noticed how some of his juniors picked some of his traits - one of them being Stepanyan. Who is an evenly tempered man. Partially due to your husband's influence.
He does everything he can to make you comfortable even if you don't realize it. though it's very subtle but if you squint enough, you'll notice it.
“родная?”
“Hm?”
“Let's head back inside. It's getting pretty late.”
“Oh right — sorry, I got busy staring at the aurora.” You answered, taking his hand to help yourself up, letting him lead the way inside the warmth of your house.
After settling down in your shared bedroom, you let him wrap his arms around you, burying his face in your neck - trapping you in a bear hug while your fingers play with his hair.
Whilst the snow outside never stopped, Valeriy's embrace combined with the fireplace is enough to keep you warm through the night.
Comfortable silence fell between you two. Only the sound of breathing can be heard.
“How’s your day?” he asked, breaking the silence.
You proceed to tell him about your day, rambling while he listens. responding with either a nod or a hum. His job has never been easy. Having to keep his guards up all the time can be tediously exhausting — only nights like these allows him to fully rest his body and mind. Being able to let his guard down and not having to think about everything and anything.
All thanks to your comfort.
“While I was on my way back, I saw Teucer—oh” You looked at your now sleeping husband who fell asleep amidst your story. Silently chuckling yourself, you placed a kiss on his forehead before finally deciding to call it a night and drift to sleep.
“Goodnight, my love.”

chigiri hyoma, your boyfriend, who literally is also your best friend.
you, who have always struggled with friendships; it's not that you didn't have friends! no, in fact, you have a lot of friends— you’re quite literally friends with everyone. however, like aristotle once said, a friend to all is a friend to none.
you, who have many friends, but you aren’t quite sure where you fall in their eyes. you’re close enough with them to know their secrets, but not close enough to be invited to parties and group chats…?
you, who have never really had any genuine friendships built on deep and meaningful connections. sure, you know many people and are in so many social circles, but you truthfully aren’t as close with any of them as you would like to be.
you, who fall under the label of a “floater friend.”
that was until you met your boyfriend.
boyfriend + best friend chigiri, who naturally became your best friend when you two started dating. you honestly have no idea how it happened, but you two just clicked, and things went on from there.
boyfriend + best friend chigiri, who loves going to the mall and shopping sprees with you. he loves going to makeup stores and helping you shade-match products, watching you come out of the change room with a stunning outfit he suggested, helping you shop for new bras, etc.
boyfriend + best friend chigiri, who loves self-care sessions whilst gossiping. you help him apply his face mask, then he helps you apply yours. you two would sit on your bed, and he would talk and complain about his teammates. "yeah, and he’s that nasty ninja—” "the one with the ugly green streak in his hair?” "oh my god, yes, thank you! that singular highlight is so fucking ugly; like, seriously, what was he going for??”
boyfriend + best friend chigiri, who loves listening to you rant while playing with your hair. you'll be sitting in front of a mirror while he does your hair, and you’ll be complaining. he'll always throw in a few comments, agreeing with you or giving a reaction to show that he’s actually listening.
boyfriend + best friend chigiri, who always hypes up your outfits; however, he will definitely point out if something looks off. something along the lines of, "princess, the top is super cute, but definitely change the jeans. the shades don’t match.”
your friends, who start complaining and making jokes about how you’ve “replaced them with your boyfriend!” but it really got you thinking about how your boyfriend doesn’t make you feel left out, how your boyfriend doesn’t make you reach out first, and how your boyfriend is always there for you.
boyfriend + best friend chigiri, who is there to listen and comfort you when you rant about your struggles with your friends, but then he lets out a soft chuckle when you wipe away your tears and say, "it's whatever, though. i don't care. you’re my best friend anyway.”
boyfriend + best friend chigiri, who now always invites you whenever he visits his sister in tokyo. he knows his sister would love you, and after finding out about your struggles with your friends, he wanted to introduce you to more people.
boyfriend + best friend chigiri, who’s absolutely right about his sister. she adores you and offers to take you out on a “girls only shopping spree” which chigiri was heavily against. "koyuki, don’t hog her all to yourself!!” he pouts.
boyfriend + best friend chigiri, who loves sleepovers at his place. he loves staying up to watch movies on his couch and doing your nails. he learned how to perfect french tips and has a whole pinterest board full of nail inspo for you!
boyfriend + best friend chigiri, who wakes up next to you on the couch in the middle of the night, movie still running on the big screen tv. his eyes soften once he sees you; it’s a cute sight. you’re asleep, with your head on his shoulder, and a bit of drool coming out of your mouth. he doesn’t mind— if it were anyone else, he definitely would. he was about to move until he paused. "you're my best friend,” he mutters.
“field section, row 18…” you muttered to yourself, trying to find your seat. the week had passed by fast, and before long, it was already friday evening. before leaving the flat, you’d already set everything up for tonight’s sleepover: the projector ready for movie marathons, popcorn kernels waiting to be microwaved, the lounge cleared for sleeping bags— and since your roommate planned on spending the weekend with her boyfriend, it was just the icing on top.
“y/n, over here!” you heard nanase call. you turned to see your two friends, nanase and hiori, waving their arms. “our seats are right here!”
“nana! hiori!” you ran up to them, weaving through the rows of seats before pulling them both into a hug. “nana, how did your interview go?”
nanase grinned immediately. “it went great!”
“that smile tells me you already got the job,” you giggled.
“i mean… having someone on the inside helps…” he said bashfully, jerking a thumb toward the light blue-haired boy.
hiori sighed as he sat down in his seat. “i barely did anything.”
“you literally told your manager i was ‘hardworking and reliable.’”
“that’s because ya are,” he replied simply. “‘n because if i hafta survive another saturday rush alone, i’m actually gonna lose my mind.”
you laughed as they started friendly bickering. “so nana got in through connections?”
“networking,” hiori corrected.
“corporate nepotism,” nanase countered.
“not even close to corporate, nanase. it’s a café.”
“pshhh, whatever! hopefully i’m employed now— i really gotta pay off my student loans for this year!”
“nana, this is actually huge,” you smiled at him. “you’ve been working so hard. congrats!”
“thank you, y/n!”
“by the way, y/n,” hiori piped up, leaning back in his seat, “how’d ya even get here? traffic was terrible.”
“oh, i walked,” you replied casually. truthfully, your flat wasn’t that far from the campus athletic field; it was only around a twelve-minute walk.
“nana n’ i drove here together— i picked him up after the interview, and our sleeping bags are in the trunk. man, it was so busy in the parking lot. took forever to park.”
“okay, but to be fair, hiori missed the parking entrance twice!” nanase laughed, ducking as hiori gave him a quick slap on the back.
you giggled quietly as the two continued to playfully bicker. the bleacher seats were packed, fans pouring into the rows carrying drinks and signs cheering on the teams. a loud cheer suddenly erupted from one section of the crowd as a few players from the opposing team stepped onto the field for warmups.
“oh wait,” nanase suddenly exclaimed, jumping out of his seat. “before the game starts, does anyone wanna get snacks?”
“yeah, i’m down. d’ya wanna tag along, y/n?” hiori asked, getting out of his seat and offering his hand to you.
as you opened your mouth to answer, your phone buzzed in your pocket. the screen lit up with a new text message.
eita 🤍 sent you a message.
“you guys go on ahead,” you said after a second, pulling your phone out. “i need to answer this.”
“you sure? we can totes wait!”
“nah, it’s okay. i’ll guard the seats.”
“‘kay, thanks, y/n.”
the two boys disappeared into the crowd toward the concession stands. as their voices faded into the noise around you, you looked back down at the glowing screen in your hands, your smile softening as you typed out a reply.
you let out a small chuckle as you read his message, closing your phone before slipping it back into your pocket. the smell of buttery popcorn drifted through the air while music blasted through the speakers. you leaned back in your seat for a moment before noticing someone step into the aisle behind you and sit down directly behind your row.
you turned to sneak a glance and—
oh.
your stomach immediately flipped in the stupidest way possible. the recognizable reddish-brown hair and teal eyes, so similar to rin’s.
sae. it was him. sae itoshi.
you quickly looked back toward the athletic field, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear and praying you didn’t look weird sitting alone while your friends were gone. a second later, you risked another glance.
terrible idea.
he noticed you immediately. recognition flashed across his eyes before his expression returned to its usual stoic calm. your brain completely short-circuited for a few seconds.
“oh,” he said simply. “we meet again.”
“oh— hi!” you croaked, embarrassment flooding your face. smooth. great. incredible work.
“didn’t expect to see you here,” he said, looking at you with a neutral expression. no smile, no dramatic reaction. just calm eye contact.
“uh, yeah! my friends and i got tickets from rin, haha…”
he nodded toward the empty seats beside you. “they ditch you already?”
“nono! they just went to get snacks!” you laughed nervously, waving your hands in denial.
“hm.”
an awkward silence settled between you for a moment, though it wasn’t uncomfortable. maybe he just wasn’t exactly the type to start conversations.
“hey, um… i really wanted to thank you for that night last week,” you started. “i realized i never properly thanked you, and i’m really sorry you had to deal with my sobbing mess, haha…”
“it’s nothing. rin said you got back with your boyfriend, so it doesn’t matter.”
what? was he keeping tabs on you…?
“yeah…”
another silence settled between you, this one lingering longer than the last.
“you like soccer?” you asked before you could stop yourself.
fuck. why did you ask that?
he stared at you for a second before shrugging lightly. “yeah, i do. i play for union twenty’s team.”
well, obviously you already knew that.
“what about you?” he asked after a moment, interrupting your thoughts.
“i mainly came to support rin and some of our other friends.”
“figures.”
you blinked. “what’s that supposed to mean?”
“you just don’t seem like the type to willingly sit in crowded stadiums.” his tone was blunt, but not mean. just direct.
“i can totally be social sometimes!” you defended yourself.
were you currently being teased by sae itoshi? no way… right?
“mhm.”
“that sounded fake.”
“it was.”
you stared at him for a second before bursting out laughing. for the first time that night, the corner of his mouth lifted slightly. barely a smile, only there for a split second, but enough to catch your attention.
then suddenly, footsteps approached your seats.
“we’re back!” nanase announced, carrying way too much popcorn, with hiori following behind him, stopping mid-step after noticing who was sitting nearby.
“oh,” he said slowly, looking between you and sae. you immediately recognized that look, judging by the tiny smirk forming on hiori’s face.
a loud whistle suddenly cut through the stadium. the crowd erupted instantly as bright lights flashed across the field, the announcer’s voice booming through the speakers while the players finally ran out.
the game was starting.
the match ended with your friends’ team winning 3–2. the crowd exploded into cheers and applause as isagi scored during the final minutes. he was immediately swarmed by his teammates, all shouting praises.
your three friends, bachira, and isagi jogged over toward the railing near your seats while rin trailed behind them, still sweaty from the match.
“you guys saw that, right? you all saw my amazing dribbling?” bachira exclaimed breathlessly, looking like an eager puppy waiting for praise.
“obviously,” you laughed. “you were sooo amazing, megs. you all did so well.”
isagi laughed breathlessly at bachira’s excitement before flashing you a grin.
“you three were amazing!” nanase buzzed excitedly while hiori nodded along, joining the conversation. as isagi, bachira, nanase, and hiori chatted, another teammate suddenly called for isagi, sending him scrambling away toward what looked like an interview. rin stepped forward to fill his place.
“rinnie, oh my god, you were amazing! two out of the three goals? i’m so proud of you,” you gushed, trying to pull him into a hug. unfortunately, the railing still separated you from him on the field. “gosh, i can’t even reach you from here.”
“jump,” rin murmured.
you nodded immediately, following his command. without another word, he lifted you over the railing and onto the field as you giggled. wrapping your arms around him, you immediately grimaced.
“ewww, you’re all sweaty,” you teased, trying to pull away, but he only held you tighter with a smirk.
“womp womp. cry about it.”
rin’s eyes wandered before landing on sae, who had approached the railing and was now staring at the two of you. rin finally let go before turning toward his brother.
“well done,” sae congratulated monotonously, his stoic expression unchanged.
“i—”
“rinrin! ego said for everyone to meet up in the locker room!” bachira yelled, interrupting him before he could finish. “he said something about dinner plans! free dinner!”
“wait, weren’t we supposed to have a sleepover tonight?” hiori cut in, clearly confused by the sudden change of plans. “y’know, movie marathons, microwave popcorn, y/n painting everyone’s nails. the usual.”
“sooo… slight problem…” bachira said sheepishly, looking guilty. “we have a celebratory team dinner tonight. ego apparently already booked everything, and since we won, we can’t skip it. i’m really, really sorry.”
“nono, megs, it’s totally fine! you guys should go enjoy your food. you all deserve it, especially after that win,” you reassured quickly, trying to hide your disappointment.
rin looked irritated, giving you the obvious do i have to go? look. you glared back and nodded firmly. before anyone could say anything else, nanase’s phone buzzed loudly in his hand. a huge grin spread across his face.
you laughed as rin and bachira congratulated him before hiori suddenly paused.
“wait, nanase. we literally have an early morning shift tomorrow since it’s the weekend,” hiori sighed in realization. “boss said your first training shift starts at seven.”
absolute silence. the excitement deflated instantly.
“so,” you said carefully, “the sleepover plans are… dead?”
“unfortunately… yeah…”
disappointment surged through your body, though you quickly covered it up with reassurance. “that’s totally fine! we can definitely reschedule!”
“alright! hiori and i have to leave now, if that’s okay. i really want a good night’s sleep before tomorrow,” nanase smiled before looking at hiori for approval.
“y/n, d’ya want a ride home? it’s pretty late,” hiori offered, giving you a worried look.
“i’m totes fine! now go! i’ll come visit you two tomorrow morning at the café, okay?” you reassured them. as much as you would’ve liked a ride home, your flat was in the complete opposite direction from theirs, and you hated the idea of inconveniencing them further. “alright. we’ll see you tomorrow!”
you all waved goodbye as the two departed, leaving you alone with rin and sae. bachira was nowhere to be found— presumably already back in the locker room.
“how’re you getting home tonight?” rin asked, breaking the silence.
“i’ll probably just walk home. i don’t live far, remember?”
“it’s expected to rain in ten minutes.”
well, fuck. maybe you really should’ve taken that ride offer. you could totally call your boyfriend to pick you up— no, wait. he was out drinking with his friends right now. the last thing you wanted was for him to get into an accident driving under the influence.
rin noticed your hesitation immediately— the slightly furrowed brows, the way you bit the inside of your cheek, the unconscious tilt of your head whenever you were deep in thought.
he glanced at you, then at his brother, then back at you again.
“sae will drive you home,” rin sighed, giving your shoulder a quick pat.

“did you hear that (name) has a financé now?” wow. what a way to start his week. now come to think of it, shishiba hadn’t heard that name in a while. “really now? she got engaged?” he mused as osaragi nodded.
“yes. i saw her ring. it looked very expensive,” the ravenette said, holding up her phone. a picture of a sapphire ring on your ring finger, tagging your new fiancé (soon to be husband).
happiness. pride. he felt a strange, tight, aching feeling that he really didn’t want to name. all shishiba could do was let out a bitter chuckle. ‘good for her. really. good for her,’ he thought; however, that ache didn’t move.
none of this should have meant anything, but something inside him clicked. now seeing your name, your face, an older version of the girl he once knew. and suddenly, he felt a slow realization that made his heart beat a little too fast. ‘fuck. i liked her. not just back then. not just as a friend.’ it was something he never let himself understand until now. the realization hit harder because it was too late to do anything about it; you two hadn’t spoken in years.
now that he’s thought about it— it’s been quite some time since he last saw you; life pulled you two onto different roads. you retired as an assassin, left the order shortly after osaragi joined, moved back to kyoto, and created a new version of yourself. eventually, you both started drifting apart. not from any sort of big fight, just silence that kept stretching and stretching until it became normal.
the universe really had its own timing.
two days later, you were out for an errand run and rushed into a small convenience store— sakamoto's store. “hi there! is taro sakamoto here?” you asked, walking into the store, being greeted by a blonde young man. “he’s um, currently out at the moment?” the boy replied hesitantly. you squinted and read his name tag ‘shin’.
“alright, that’s no problem, shin! if you could tell him that (name) dropped by when he comes back, that would be great!” you smiled and turned for the door. before you could reach the handle, the door was opened by two men. yoichi nagumo and … shishiba? your stomach drops.
“shishiba…?” you stammered. your voice hadn’t changed. for him, it still felt like coming home.
for a second, you two just stared at each other— surprised, awkward, stunned that the past had suddenly resurfaced. before he could say anything, nagumo jumped onto you, pulling you into a tight, warm hug.
“well, if it isn’t our dear (name)!” he beamed, patting your back, then walking into the shop, leaving you at the entrance with shishiba. his gaze was warm, familiar, and overwhelming. suddenly, the world stops for a second. all the memories start resurfacing— the past.
memories of when the two of you met through family friends at the age of six, and how both of you attended kansai region assassin institute. memories of when he started skipping classes and eventually dropped out. memories of when he was taken under the wing of yotsumura, yet you both stayed in touch, remaining as close friends. memories of when he joined the order around the same time as you (after you graduated). the precious memories of the boy who used to walk you home after school, who knew your favourite snacks, who once held your hand at a festival without realizing how deeply it burned.
“heard you got engaged. osaragi told me.” shishiba managed to say, trying to keep his tone steady.
“yeah,” you replied softly, eyes searching for his. “it all happened pretty fast.”
there was something behind the way you said it— it was with uncertainty; a question. a moment passed that felt too long and meaningful for two people who were supposed to be moving on.
“‘was beginning to think you joined witness protection.” he hummed quietly with a small smirk creeping upon his face. your mouth curved into a smile and the ache in your chest shifted, except it wasn’t pain. it was something waking up again. truthfully, you had the fattest crush on shishiba for the longest of time. you decided to give up on that fantasy after you moved to kyoto; however, this meeting changed everything. fuck. fuck this. you shouldn’t be feeling this way. not when you have a soon-to-be husband waiting for you in your cozy apato.
“i’ve missed you too,” you said, then paused for a bit. you knew it was wrong to ask but you did anyways. “do you wanna get drinks tonight and maybe catch up…?”
