I'm blue! I like to be called by they/them. Do you think we could be friends? :O
[A little kid in a mustard-yellow cardigan sidles up to the stranger. Their hair is hiding most of their face. They're holding something.]
"Hi! Mister?... Are you a mister?"
[it shrugs.]
hi.
[They shuffle from foot to foot.]
“I found a thing. Do you want to see?!”
..yes?
[They stretch out their hands. In it is a weird ornament covered in moss.]
[it makes a curious rumbling noise, leaning down to inspect the ornament.]
[They brush some of the moss away impatiently.
It's some sort of garden gnome, but the eyes are both missing- which should not be possible, given that the entire thing is made of flat terracotta and all the details are only painted on. Nevertheless, there are two round holes where the eyes ought to be.
Blue seems unfazed by this.]
little guy.. [it makes a cheerful noise and starts coughing.]
[Blue tilts their head to one side.]
"you okay?"
mhm. [it nods.] wh.. where did you.. (huff) find that?
In my garden- buried under a whole lot of shrubs and plants and stuff. I've never seen it before.
[A little kid in a mustard-yellow cardigan sidles up to the stranger. Their hair is hiding most of their face. They're holding something.]
"Hi! Mister?... Are you a mister?"

[Blue runs after Poppy, shouting.]
Hey! Hey, hang on!
[She turns, in a huff.]
What.
[They stop running so fast, their wellington boots leave tracks in the leaf mulch.]
I'm sorry, Poppy.
...
[She doesn't say anything, but she's clearly still mad.]
[They tuck their hands into their armpits and stare at the ground.]
...Mom says I'm not always very nice to people. Sorry.
You're not.
And I'm not scared. Not of the woods.
What of, then?
I don't want ma to get angry at me.
Blue stops, then nods emphatically.
i get it.
...sorry.
It's fine.
[Blue shuffles their feet, then giggles.]
I guess I put that jar back after all, sort of, huh?
[Blue runs after Poppy, shouting.]
Hey! Hey, hang on!
[She turns, in a huff.]
What.
[They stop running so fast, their wellington boots leave tracks in the leaf mulch.]

I'm sorry, Poppy.
[Blue runs up to Poppy. They're bundled up in three or four different cardigans and sweaters, and there is a smudge of Earth on their nose.]"Hi! Poppy! Hi!"
[Poppy looks… exhausetd. She’s wearing a jacket, but it looks threadbare.]
… Hey, Blue.
[They’re holding a big jar.]
What-cha doin’?
Taking a walk. Accidentally locked myself out, also.
What do you have?
[They tip up the jar.] “Tadpoles!”
[Whatever they are, they’re not tadpoles. Especially not in December.]
You should put them back where you found them. By removing native animals you do harm to the ecosystem.
[Blue tips their head to one side.]
Huh? They were in the jar when I found them.
… Where did you find the jar?
[They jerk a thumb towards the woods.]
Under a rock in the woods.
You should REALLY put it back if it came from the woods and doesn’t belong to you.
[They huff.]
Oh, don’t be a spoil-sport. …Fine. I’ll put them back. You want to come with?
Sure.
[Blue nods, grins, and wanders off towards the woods, the jar tucked under one arm.]
[Poppy follows, expression dull.]
[Blue is unnerved by her silence, and decides to try to make conversation.]
So. What d’you like to do? For fun?
Usually I walk around by myself. I like finding hiding places.
People don’t usually talk to me, so…
[Blue jumps over a large rock, for no good reason other than for the fun of it.]
I like exploring. Obviously. ‘Specially the forest.
Ma doesn’t like it when I go into them. Especially alone.
[Blue shrugs.]
My mom doesn’t either. But I’ll be okay, so I do it anyway.
Don’t you get in trouble?
[Blue stops for a second.]
…Yeah. Sometimes.
And you keep doing it anyways?
I mean, yeah. I want to. She’s never told me why I can’t, just. “I’m your mother! Mother knows best! Blah-blah-blah.” [Blue imitates.]
… Weird.
Ma’s told me why I shouldn’t go, but… she said not to tell anyone.
[Blue looks hard at Poppy. Well. They’re probably looking hard at Poppy. Under all the hair, it’s hard to tell.]
I won’t tell if you tell me.
Ma says something in there is the reason why she only has one eye now. And that something happened to Mom in there, and that’s why…
I can’t say more than that. But bad things happen in those woods.
[Blue tilts their head to one side.]
You could say more than that.
I can’t tell you more. It’s not safe.
[Blue tilts their head to the other side.]
You could tell me more. If I wanted you to.
[They reach a hand up- for the first time Poppy’s ever seen them do so- and just touch their fringe. Just slightly. As if they’re thinking about sweeping it out of their eyes.]
You could tell me more. [They repeat.]
… If you don’t stop that I’m leaving.
[They tilt their head back the other way. Tick-tock, like a clock. They’re beginning to sound funny.]
…Want to see something cool?
Blue, what the hell are you doing.
[Blue giggles, a little nervously, bringing their hand halfway down to their side again.]
You said a cuss word.
…
You’re kind of scary.
[They nod enthusiastically, hair bouncing.]
Spike says that.
cuz it’s true.
… I should go.
[Blue frowns.]
Aw. I’m sorry. Please don’t go.
I’m cold. And I don’t want to go into the woods.
The woods aren’t scary, silly! …Not when I’m around, anyway.
But.. I don’t want you to be cold… so.
I’m not SCARED.
[She grits her teeth and glares, hard.]
[Blue grins.]
Yeah you are. You’re scared. Chicken.
[They put the jar down between their feet to free up their hands.]
Chicken! Bawk-bawk-bawk!
[Blue runs up to Poppy. They're bundled up in three or four different cardigans and sweaters, and there is a smudge of Earth on their nose.]"Hi! Poppy! Hi!"
