bio
Beatrice isn’t a bad person. She’s just not always a nice person. (And nowadays, she’s not even always a person.)
Her whole life turned on the axis of one choice, one mistake, one bad day - the fateful day she threw a rock at a bluebird and earned herself and her entire family a curse. Maybe that should’ve taught her restraint and calm and propriety. But, nowadays, Beatrice can’t help being angry. Furious, even. Elias isn’t built for bluebirds and it burns in her stomach every time she’s given crumbs as payment or has to spend her precious few hours as an actual human being tracking down paperwork for the dispatcher on the other end of the phone who refuses to pay her what she's due.
The anger twists and dances in her stomach, fueling and fueled by the guilt she’s been carrying around since she first threw that rock. It’s a burden she can never forget, not even when she’s human. It lingers and flickers in the corner of her eye just like her curse does. The half-formed state of it - of herself - feels like mockery. She hasn’t fixed it yet. She still carries that duty, even in another world. And now, she might not ever see its fruition.
Her family loved her. It didn’t help. She needed to fix it before she could face them, or that’s what she told herself, and now she’s getting pretty certain she’ll never see them again. Her loyalty is a sharp thing, liable to cut those who get in the way. (Or herself. She has too many regrets.)
Her tongue is sharp too. She doesn’t try very hard to be pleasant. Wirt and Greg ended up liking her anyway. She ended up liking them too, more than she ever planned. The world is a cruel, uncaring, terrible place, but they made her laugh. They stuck by her and she stuck by them. She wanted to help them because she liked them, not just because of her curse.
So, she isn’t always nice. She isn’t always thoughtful, either. She has plenty of cleverness and common sense, but there’s a burning inside her that overwhelms it sometimes. Maybe it’s love. Maybe it’s anger. Maybe it’s both, and more besides. All this to say: it was impulsive when she threw the rock. And it was impulsive when she dove in after Wirt and Greg. That’s who Beatrice is. Fire-hearted in her best and worst moments.
Fire for a heart and a stone of guilt sitting sharp and heavy in her stomach. Impulsive, abrasive, stubborn. A cruel little girl who’d throw a rock at a bird. A thoughtless little girl who doomed her family. A brave woman, maybe, who tried to save her friends and suffered the consequences. Who’s still trying to save them, and her family, and herself, despite it all. Hope is the thing with feathers, and, like her feathers, she just can’t escape it.
