ASK AWAY
βokay, see, that actually makes me feel better because i was fully convinced i was about to accidentally do the most embarrassing thing possible,β mavis laughed, glancing over the setup again with obvious curiosity. she nudged his arm lightly. βand thank the gods this is your first time too, because i was about two seconds away from pretending i suddenly had somewhere else to be. we can mess up together.. or i can just blame you now." she teased.
βoh, donβt get me wrong, we could still end up embarrassing ourselves in front of everyone but youβre right, at least we wonβt be doing it alone.β thereβs a slight shyness to miloβs laugh despite his words, and he follows her look toward the setup, taking everything in. βwhat made you want to come, though? i didnβt take you for a dungeons and dragons kind of person β which is on me, but i figured youβd be into the more dark and mysterious night market activities.β
closed starter for @thelostthakkar location: the grotto
mandy was thankful to hand off her shift tonight in order to enjoy the event at gloam market, the longer she stuck around. the way they managed to highlight all these businesses from different corners of the city was not lost on her, much less anyone else. even mandy couldn't resist good food, good music, and a giant jewelry drawer marked at 70% off.
that was where she was now, standing in front of this drawer of rings sitting on a box in the middle of the grotto. she sifted through the gold side, sticking anything that fit on her fingers and tossing anything that didn't aside. the blonde was normally the type to wear stacks of rings, so this is what she did now - curated a stack, held out her hands, and observed.
but she needed a second set of eyes, obviously. she and mavis had parted ways after their tattoo excursion and now she stood alone, scanning the room for a random opinion. the closest person to her would do, honesty.
"hey," she said, still holding out her hands - making eye contact with the guy next to her before guiding his attention with her gaze. "any chance you have an opinion?"
milo hadnβt ever been much of a jewellery man, but he did like crystals. his childhood bedroom had shelves and shelves of different geodes and crystals that he had collected on trips with his grandfather, all organised and coded based on colour and variation type. he hadnβt realised how much heβd found comfort in them, especially those that came alive in the darkness, until heβd wandered past a few of them earlier and begun to feel homesick.
he was stood just slightly to the side of mandy, scanning the tables for something he might be able to begin his new collection with, when his opinion was asked for.
milo looks both ways to the side of him, assuming the question was for someone who might actually stand a chance of answering it. βyouβre asking me? i mean, i can try and help but i should warn you that no oneβs ever asked my advice in jewellery before, and probably with good reason.β
βwell, whatβs the worst that can happen?β he shrugs and leans down slightly to look closer. βwhat exactly are you looking for? is it for a special occasion?β
nimona had planned on spending their afternoon sketching in the botanical gardens - the weather was perfect for it, sunny and warm with the slightest breeze. they'd tossed their sketchbook into their messenger bag with a handful of various art supplies - pens, markers, pencils of different colors - and set out after lunch. unfortunately things don't always go to plan and after an hour and change of mostly erasing things, they'd given up their own artistic endeavors in favor of observing the artistic endeavors of others... which is how they found themself here, at the art museum.
they stood facing one of the paintings, their eyes flitting from object to person to landscape. a soft hum left their lips and they leaned sideways a little - just enough to sliiiightly invade the personal space of the person standing closest to them; enough to catch their attention without touching them. "do you ever wonder what they're thinking?" nimona asked, eyes still focused on the painting in front of them. "the people in the paintings, i mean."
milo gives nimona a sideways glance as he senses them moving closer, a small chuckle leaving his lips at their question. originally he had planned to have a quiet afternoon at the art museum, attempting to find some kind of way to switch off his brain. but honestly? this kind of question was a much more interesting way to spend his time.
thereβs a short, thoughtful hum from milo before he moves his eyes back toward the painting, hand moving up so his chin could rest on it. βi havenβt ever thought about it, but now i canβt help but hope they donβt, yβknow? theyβre stuck there, right? so iβm pretty sure if they could think, it wouldnβt be good for them.β he pauses. βwhat do you think these guys are thinking?β

βI had a feelinβ you could use some comfort food today, so I made your favorite.β Tiana slid the pan between them with a small smile. βAnd yes, before you fuss about it, I swapped the walnuts out. Used smoky praline pecans this time.β
βLittle fresh thyme on top, too,β she said proudly. βItβll taste real good with the peas, gravy, and roast from yesterday.β
milo looked between tiana and the dish with appreciative disbelief as he attempted to process his luck. living on his own usually meant that food like this only ever occurred by accident; his kitchen counters currently overrun with packs of microwaveable noodles and the occasional yogurt pot if he was lucky.
he wasnβt proud of it, but it was much better than any attempt heβd actually made of cooking when he was left unsupervised. this, however, reminded him of how much he missed having a real meal that wasnβt thrown together in thirty seconds.
βwait, are you sure youβre sure? can i give you something for it? this looks way too good for me to just take and it mustβve taken ages, right?β
open event starter location: the βscat cat recordsβ pop-up time: 8pm
ariel had worked in every version of a community market the greater area had to offer, but the gloam market always had a very prominent piece of her heart. to find home here full time and to be able to host an event that celebrated her neighbors at the same time - it was a dream come true for the mermaid. organizing this event introduced her to businesses she had never stepped in before - beautiful shops and restaurants that helped breathe culture through the cities. she had a feeling that this would be a great marketing opportunity for everyone showcased this evening, not just the grotto.
with the shop left in capable hands, ariel was making a lap around the rest of the market, where traditionally empty spaces had been filled by stalls that normally didnβt see this side of the bridge. whispers of the event seemed to be mixed, for some didnβt necessarily agree with ariel that the underland could be welcoming if it so chose, but still she ran around with a grin on her face. twirling in her dress. basking in the fanfare.
one of the events she was looking most forward to was the line up of DJs and bands that would soon get ready to play into the night. with the help of mister oβmalley and the rest of the crew at scat cat, they managed to get a robust spread of entertainment. she watched as the next act set up, excitement bubbling up as instruments started to tune. she looked to the person next to her and grinned. βjust to warn you - if you stay next to me, iβm eventually going to ask you to dance.β
milo had always enjoyed the anonymity of a crowd and this evening had been no different; being a part of something like this while also being just an observer had felt like the good medium he was in need of after long nights alone in his study. he wasnβt all that knowledgable when it came to music, but he still loved it.
making sure he had a good enough space to enjoy the music without being shoved in like a school of fish, milo waited with anticipation for the next act to begin.
he was mid-drink when he notices it was, in fact, him being spoken to and after an awkward rushed swallow, milo shakes his head with a laugh. βoh, i really donβt think thatβs a good idea for you. iβm all limb, iβve been told. and my grandfather never got me dance lessons, i donβt think he ever considered it an important skill.β he shrugs nonchalantly before catching himself and straightening his back. βsorry β he was wrong, probably, about that. iβm sure dancing is great if youβre good at it? iβm more of a β¦ swayer, i think.β

option a: hey! don't touch that.
βhey! i wouldnβt do that if i were you.β ericβs voice cut in quick, a hand shooting out to grab someoneβs wrist before they could pick up one of the stranger-looking items sitting on a nearby vendorβs table. whatever it was, it pulsed faintly, like it had a heartbeat of its own. he let go just as fast, stepping back like he didnβt want to be any closer to it than necessary. he ran a hand through his hair, glancing between them and the object with a frown. βdo you have any idea what that thing is?β
option b: cat therapy? yes, please.
eric hadnβt expected the underland to includeβ¦ this. tucked between darker stalls sat the lucky cat cafΓ© pop-up, warm light spilling out as a handful of cats wandered lazily between patrons like they owned the place. he crouched down, one already climbing into his lap like it had chosen him specifically, and let out a quiet laugh under his breath. βyeah, alright,β he muttered, scratching behind its ears like this was the most normal thing in the world. then he glanced up at someone nearby, a grin breaking through. βdonβt tell anyone, but i think this might be the best part of the night.β he paused, eyeing another cat weaving between ankles. βyou thinking about adopting one, or just here for the cuddles?β

milo simply blinks at eric in response, eyes shifting between him and the object in his hand, slightly startled at the sudden interruption. admittedly, no, he had no idea what was in his hands. βuh β i thought it was just a shell. do you think it could be cursed? do shells get cursed? feels a little harsh to curse a shell when just anybody could pick it up. especially when iβm that anybody.β
the worry fades for a moment when milo sees him backing up, a small smirk curling his lips. βyouβre really worried about this thing, huh? how many times have you been cursed by a shell?β milo bites back a laugh when he realises just how strong a possibility that could be. βwait, have you been cursed by a shell before?β
#πΌπ½π²π»πππΊπππΎπ βΊβΊΒ ft. semra gonen location:Β gloam market status:Β 0/4
Semra was certain the event would end in disaster. in fact, she was hoping for it. a little entertainment never hurt anyone, and she was all for free entertainment. if she didn't have a hand in it, even better, sometimes a girl didn't want to have to do all the work. she wanted things to come to her freely. someone must have been listening to her because a fight broke out between an underland vendor and merchant. their bickering was loud enough that a crowd was starting to form. someone beside her looked like they were about to play hero when semra put a hand in front of them to stop them "don't try anything," she warned. "i want to see who wins."
milo wasnβt sure what had compelled him to want to intervene in the altercation; something in his gut, maybe, or just that heβd end up feeling guilty if he simply stood there and watched. secretly he was grateful for the hand stopping him from ending up getting his ass beat by strangers, but his brows furrow as he gives semra a confused look.
βyou donβt think we should do something? someone could get hurt, or more people could jump in and then even more people get hurt?β he pauses, eying her. βare you enjoying this? do you know them?β
open starter. location: streets of the underland
clover is not particularly ditzy, not unless on purpose to claim the attention she so fiercely believes belongs to her, but she is focused when needed be and that leads to accidents sometimes. she has been on a mission of surveiling the underland, making sure there is no trouble to be found, at least not out in the open. and her eyes scanning the shops fail to notice the people right in front of her, causing her to walk into someone in full force.
"oh my, geez, i'm so so so so sorry, ouch."
milo had an old map in both hands, head down and taking it all in despite being in a not-so-convenient space to do so. he figured it was too busy for anyone to be moving at any real speed, though he was promptly proven wrong the second clover crashed into him. he panicked for a moment, a short gasp as he gave the map a once-over β no real damage, just slight crumples where his fist had closed from bracing for impact.
once he knew the map was safe, an easy laugh left his mouth and he shook his head. βiβll take the blame for that one, iβm sorry. i have a habit of not being very visible, socially. that and i shouldβve been looking where i was going. are you alright? are you late or lost?β

option a: dungeons, dragons, and a vampire?
she hovered just outside the setup for the midnight dungeons and dragons one shot, arms crossed as she watched people gather around like it was some kind of ritual. mavis didnβt look like she belonged there... a bit too guarded, too shy, but she hadnβt walked away either. βsoβ¦ weβre all just gonna sit around and pretend weβre pirates or something?β she asked, glancing at someone nearby with a faint smirk. her tone wasnβt mocking just curious, edged with something almost playful. βbecause i could be convinced.β a beat. βbut if iβm doing this, iβm not playing anything lame.β
option b: a tattoo, maybe?
she stood just outside starlight tattoo + piercing, staring at the celestial flash sheet like she was trying to talk herself out of something sheβd already decided on. the designs glimmered under soft light... stars, constellations, something that almost looked like it moved if you stared too long. mavis huffed a quiet breath, glancing sideways at whoever had stopped nearby. βdonβt look at me like that,β she muttered, already defensive. βitβs just a tattoo.β her eyes flicked back to the sheet, lingering. βbesidesβ¦ could be worse decisions iβve made down here tonight.β

option a
milo gives mavis an excited grin when he notices her presence, notebook tucked in his crossed arms as he looked between her and the set up. βyou wanna know what the beauty of it is? there are no lame options, unless you make lame choices. which means the world is your oyster and nothing can go wrong β well, a lot can go wrong but i guarantee itβll be cool when it does.β the enthusiasm is clear as he speaks, the grin still not leaving his face.
βsome people actually dress up as their characters, too, which means you and i are aggressively underdressed. have you got any plans for what direction you wanna go in? this is actually my first time doing something like this, so we at least have each other if it all goes terribly.β
open event starter (0/4) location: gaston's tavern pop-up beer tent
dash often found himself jumping into situations in order to get what he wanted, in lieu if choosing a more casual option. for example - eyes scanned the beer tent as he passed through (again) for (another) refill, landing on the only open stool at the end of the bar. now, dash was fast - you know? he could have sped over, slipped through the crowd, sat down without anyone noticing until he was there, and waited patiently for the bartender like a normal fucking dude.
that is not what happened.
well, he sped - but his precision after a few beers was nowhere near as good as it was on a normal day. he bumped into someone, maybe two or maybe three, before escaping the cluster of people, hopping on the stool, and looking over at the person next to him. no one saw shit - it was fine. "hey," he said, willing to make conversation with a wall at this point and without much effort. "what are you drinking? next is on me."
milo had found himself at the beer tent when the hustle and bustle had gotten a little too much for him; he enjoyed the fact that it felt like they were all a part of something bigger and that this time it wasnβt due to any disappearances (or worse). it was simply peopleβs sense of community and curiosity that had brought them together, well, at least for the most part. he knew there would at least be a small percentage here just for the money they could earn, but hey. after his second beer he figured it wasnβt worth dwelling on; a win was a win.
milo jumped slightly when he finally realised dash was sitting next to him, coughing in surprise before he could get any words out. βwait, were you here the whole time?β he takes his glasses off for a moment and hums. βmaybe i should look into getting my prescription checked.β thereβs a beat of silence as he considers the question, picking up his cup and looking at its almost empty contents. βa beer, or at least itβs what theyβre calling it. but iβd feel a little guilty asking for a drink when i havenβt introduced myself. iβm milo, and you are?β
ah, yes. a human who took chessβ questions as seriously as they did β it was a rare response, but thatβs what made it welcome. chess absorbed every word. no direct answer? well, that checked out. people were not great at being direct, the cat had learned over time. joe shmoe and all that. it was true, though- how could they claim their hours were the same when one could spend scrolling in a telephone, one could spend drawing a master, and one could spend it watching it all happen? would all three of those hours hold the same value? how could they describe them as the same? then there were schedules. maps and throughlines. then the question was thrown back to the cat β how did chess understand time? well, they didnβt β not really. only now did they start to understand a humanβs understanding of time. βwhen itβs dark, things turn off. people turn off. the world breathes, but it goes somewhere else. when the sun wakes up, so does earth. thatβs what I know.β a simple observation, in the grand scheme of things β but it felt profound to a being that didnβt sleep. didnβt sleep, gaining so much more time than the average person β and yet he spent it watching. waiting. βwhat do you do in your free time?β
"unless you're a night owl, that is. or just have a bad sleep-pattern, sometimes i think i prefer everything when it's night time. like you say, everything's off, it's like a breath of fresh air and i don't have to think of everything all at once. do you know what i mean? or are you more of a morning/daytime person?" milo laughs softly at chess' question, though there's a tint of embarrassment in his cheeks. "i wish i had free time to do something with, honestly. i mean, it's my own fault really, i've never had a great work-life balance when my work's always been my life, you know? it was my grandfather's life, and then it was mine, and here i am without any real hobbies." there's a short pause before he scrunches his face up at himself. "that was probably a little more information than you meant to get by your question, i'm sorry. i read, i guess. yeah, i read in my spare time. what do you do?"
#πΌπ½π²π»πππΊπππΎπ βΊβΊΒ ft. jasper skellington location: Go Figure Skating Rink status:Β 0/5
βββ A sense of calm never lingered long in the city of Elias. Any moment of peace was stripped away as quickly as it came on. Since taking a position on the council, Jasperβs life had been non-stop. It seemed like no matter how hard the council tried, Hades was always two steps ahead of them. Being who he was, Jasper had thrown himself into work. He wouldnβt stop until a solution was found. His tunnel vision had come to a halt due to the recent news about Orion. For the first time in a very long time, Jasper felt like he could breathe. Of course, he didnβt want to get his hopes up. He relished the good feeling but remained realistic, though his optimism dared to break through. To escape his mind, Jasper decided the best place to do that was the Ice-skating rink. The last time he had skated was when he had visited Christmas Town. He wasnβt the greatest skater, but he wasnβt terrible by any means. He wasnβt embarrassing himself, so that was a small win. βAre you needing help?β the skeleton asked. He was on his second lap around the rink when he noticed someone struggling on the ice.
milo wasnβt entirely sure what had compelled him to go skating when he woke up this morning; maybe the lack of sleep had finally gotten to him, or maybe he needed something unfamiliar to give himself a break from the continuous overthinking. but regardless of whatever reason sounded good this morning, he was beginning to regret his impulsivity now he was actually on the ice. jasper's voice snaps his attention away from where it was focussed on a rather intense grip on the side of the rink, and milo gives him an unsure smile. "i appreciate the offer, i really do. but i think the safest thing for both of us is you leaving me here and saving yourself, i don't think i'd look too good if i gave a counsellor a black eye, even if it is accidental."
#πΌπ½π²π»πππΊπππΎπ βΊβΊΒ ft. leonardo hamato location: sugar rush sweet shop status:Β 0/5
βββ βI donβt know how to feel about these.β The two best times of the year, in Leo's humble opinion, were Halloween, Valentineβs Day, and Easter, solely for the candy. Perhaps it was nostalgia that tainted his vision; the days of his youth with his brothers always colored how he viewed things now. It seemed in this day and age, many places were getting experimental with their food flavors. He had seen endless TikTokβs involving food atrocities. His palette was adventurous, but there was a limit. The KFC-flavored jellybeans staring at him seemed like a perfect example of that limit. βJust because we can .. doesnβt mean we should.β His attention turned to the Dr. Pepper-flavored peeps. He quickly grabbed them. βAt least these seem more reasonable.β He paused. βI promise Dr. Pepper isnβt my entire personality.β
"hey, no defence needed here. i think there are a lot of worse personalities to have than dr. pepper. i'm more of a coke man myself, but there's no judgement." milo puts up his hands in mock defence, a small chuckle following. having his own sweet tooth and the downfall off his own curiosity, milo had tried every weird flavour under the sun within his first month here. "what do you think is the worse flavour you've ever tried? or, the one that seemed the worst but honestly wasn't so bad?"
sylvie liked to take home whatever was left over at the bakery home with her at the end of the night. usually she was good at being able to tell how much she'd need to end up baking for the day, but somehow she ended up with far too much for the day. having to feed seven mouths aside from her own was more troubling than she thought it would be, yet she was always up for the challenge. "oh, no. if i left them, they'd be thrown out in the morning. i have a ton of roommates and even they can't get through all of this." she thought they probably wouldn't have that terrible of a time, but she was trying to get them to eat healthier. "thank you for offer. maybe your company? i've already finished cleaning for the day." at least as far as the shop went. home was a different matter.
she felt like she was sometimes a bit of an inconvenience when she asked someone to pick her up. she looked at him. "do you happen to drive?" there was something in the air that was... well, sinister and sylvie didn't want to be alone. "i live a bit away from here and was going to ask one of my roommates to come pick me up. If not, I'd appreciate the company."
milo frowned lightly at the mention of needing a ride and, with an apologetic look, he lifts up and waves his bicyle helmet in her direction. "unless you want to sit on the handle bars, i'm a little useless when it comes to a lift home, i'm sorry. but company i can definitely do, and would love to." shifting his helmet under his arm, milo offers up his hands for any baked goods or bags she might need a hand with. "i think there's a bench over there, if that works for you? i'm pretty sure it didn't rain today so i'll take that win." he gives sylvie a short smile before nodding in the direction of the bench. "your roommates must be pretty grateful for all the stuff you bring home at the end of the day, right? i'm beginning to think i might've made a mistake in opting to live alone, i can't believe i never considered the baked goods side of it all after all this time."
#πΌπ½π²π»πππΊπππΎπ βΊβΊΒ ft. luz noceda location: Aurora Art Center status:Β 0/5
βββ βI think Iβm doing this wrong.β Luz was staring at the painting before her. The Aurora Art Center was holding another one of their paint and sip classes. The art for this month was a bunny. Luz of course, believed she had great artistic abilities until this very moment. She had been staring at the painting for so long she couldn't quite pinpoint what was off about it. βDid I make its head shape weird? Is it the flowers? Somewhere β¦ I went wrong, I donβt know how.β She sighed, dramatically. βYours looks amazing! I love the color you chose for the eggs.β
luz's voice breaks the concentration milo was holding by a thread, and he was actually grateful for it. he'd been staring at his palette for the last three minutes hoping that something creative would come out of it; he was good at drawing technically, and he loved shapes and design, but he always felt that something was lacking when it came to the spontaneous creativity other artists seem to naturally have. looking over at luz's work, his lips immediately widen into a grin. "that's the coolest looking bunny i've ever seen -- if anything, i'd say make the head even weirder." there's a laugh, but it's nothing but genuine. "it's very you, it's great. you think? i tried to go more abstract with it but i have a feeling it isn't translating. go figure."
