Beautiful piece of subtle acting

I’m reviewing some of the Steven Universe Movie’s scenes and I notice something in the way that they have Steven behave. One of the most jarring things for me about the movie, which I honestly adored, was the fact that he was willing to go on the offensive. To fight back, at last, not just defend. The animators, however, make it very clear it isn’t something Steven likes doing.

When he is winding up to slice Spinel, he’s determined. Angry for what she’s just done to him, his family, and the threat she made to his planet. Steven has deemed her a threat and that she needs to be knocked down a peg and bubbled.

Then, right as he really gets into the swing of his ‘killing blow’… his expression changes.

He’s saddened by what he has to do, bothered by it.

That expression only intensifies as he pushes himself, and exerts himself in his current state, to fight back with Spinel’s own weapon. Steven isn’t, however, letting himself be a doormat. He isn’t letting this gem, stranger or not, hurt by his mother or not, remain as large a threat as she clearly has become.

As he swings the rejuvenator, which at the time he didn’t realize was such, he closes his eyes.

He looks away.

Just because something has to be done violently, doesn’t mean he has to like it.

My how beautifully this boy has grown up.

writing advice: never italicize words to show emphasis! if you’re writing well then the reader will know and you don’t need them!

It’s especially funny how every single one of those sentences has a completely different meaning. Besides, one shouldn’t make such generalized, idiotic statements as “never use italics,” especially not to writers. A unique style is one of the most crucial elements of writing, and use of italics is a good way to differentiate your writing from others’.
