The Rio Grande winds a 107-mile course around the Chisos Mountains on its way through the Chihuahuan Desert to the Gulf of Mexico. Through the hardest days of the Depression and WWII, the people and state of Texas worked together to create a National Park. From kindergartners to cattle barons, Texans contributed what they could to a fund to purchase land in one of the most remote but spectacularly scenic regions of their state. The deed to Big Bend was presented as Texas’ gift to the nation on June 6, 1944
