There's something very odd about Asgore's flowers.

Not just the fact that, aside from the conspicuous golden flower, they match the human souls in Undertale.

(right down to the lack of a red soul)

But Asgore apparently talks to them as though they were sentient.

He talks to the ones in the jars specifically.

And when Sans brings up the similarity to "that movie", Asgore, a little troubled, agrees.

The movie is likely "Beauty and the Beast", since Rudy also brings it up in Chapter 1 with regards to Asgore.

In the movie, the flower in glass represents a curse, to be broken only by love.

While this can't mean Asgore being a monster is the curse, as they had happily had the flowers (and been monsters) on his wedding day...

...and monsters and humans have been together for quite some time...

...there may be some other dire need to keep the flowers alive.

Apparently this is difficult for Asgore, as the flowers are not from Hometown's climate area.

And the way he keeps them alive...

...is by keeping them in complete darkness.
