Theory: Rantaro didn’t like Shuichi, and suspected he was the mastermind. During his FTE events with Kaede he implies that Shuichi being a detective could mean he’s hiding his true identity, and purposely tries to get Kaede to insult him. Later, when Shuichi asks him about the Ultimate Hunt, Rantaro immediately gets suspicious and starts dodging his questions. Even his initial greeting seems hostile to Shuichi and friendly to Kaede. This was likely to make Rantaro look like the mastermind. But knowing that Rantaro was not the mastermind, it seems clear that his more suspect behavior was actually out of wariness towards Shuichi. Shuichi himself theorizes that Rantaro probably didn’t trust any of them, but his attitude towards Shuichi is definitely different One of the reasons why Rantaro doesn’t trust Shuichi is because of the amount of time he spends with Kaede. Rantaro points out after Kaede manages to inspire everyone that the mastermind would be gunning for her, specifically. If this is the case, it would make sense for the mastermind to get close to her to keep an eye on her. And who is always with Kaede? Shuichi.
