Social Media

Parents tell us it's a waste of time and we should be doing other things.

They don't understand its value because they didn't grow up with it.

To me social media, once I got one, is a way for me to cope with the outside world.

It is how I understand the world as it is a large, scary, absolutely terrifying place.

Social media such as Pinterest got me through my first two years of high school and I learned quite a lot about me as a person and me as a friend.

I learned about friendship, loyalty, who the real friends are from the fake.

It's taught me lessons in how the world works more than the world and my parents have taught me.

It helps me keep in touch with friends from other states and now friends in other countries thanks to Tumblr being universal.

When parents are acting up, gen z heads to the phone, tablet, laptop to find solace in others who have gone through or are going through the exact same thing.

Yes there are predators out there, but parents, this is what the block and report buttons are for.

I have been smart when getting social media.

I waited to get Instagram until I was sixteen and that was only six months after my birthday because of summer camp.

Teenagers can be dumb, but most of the time, we are smart (unless they are a teenage boy, then they can be less smart).

Please stop saying we are obsessed with social media and try to understand it's because of circumstances out of everyone's control.

We want to be in control of something in this out of control world.

My American School System

Whelp... I've made it. I've made it after thirteen years in the American public school system. Four states. Four school districts. Seven schools. Preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, sixth grade, eighth grade, and ninth grade.

I'm over the moon I've made it this far without going over the edge. Many a person has succumbed to the death that is the school system. I used to love it then the year I turned thirteen changed everything. I started to realize things I never had before. I realized many a dream I had about the world was shattered. We may be "open minded" here, but it's only certain people.

I have friends who are terrified to express who they really are because of what we all hear in the hallways of our republican public school. The people who are cis and straight have no problems whatsoever. It's the noncis, community members that are in trouble. I don't believe there is a GSA club at my high school at all and that breaks my heart. We say the Pledge of Allegiance.

When I grew up in California, we didn't say the Pledge. My sister has to learn it and she thought it was the strangest thing ever. Diversity was a thing of beauty. We had an International Fair we all loved at my elementary school. We lived outside all year round.

My sixth and seventh grades were the worst and best years of my life respectively. I was bullied and manipulated in sixth grade. Seventh grade gave me the best friends I've ever had and I still keep in touch with them. I learned so much in seventh grade about the goodness of the human heart. I love everyone I've met in that year; thank you for restoring my faith in the human race.

And now in the middle of the US, it's the total opposite. Politics are a hot topic. Race is a foreign concept to many in this vastly white community. Ignorance in the adults is so real it pains me. The kids are more knowledgeable than the adults everywhere.

Some adults know what's up, but in republican states it's best I've learned to just be quiet. I've had to learn to be quiet and not talk about politics. Politics are taboo everywhere because controversial topics in America are taboo. We are scared to speak out, but in California, my friends are politically vocal and I wish my friends here could do that if we all were not absolutely terrified of what will happen. We are terrified of other things as well.

Mental health reform doesn't exist as far as aim concerned. When I was bullied in California, the teachers just sat by and watched my own classmates poke, prod, and emotionally abuse me to the point where my anxiety is now through the roof and I trigger at anything. I still am extremely traumatized from that experience. I look back and wonder why the teachers did not attempt to stop them. But I worked on it these last few years and am slowly realizing not everything is a trigger.

Some teachers care about mental health and others do not. If you get the ones who care you're experience goes up by about a million. What's worse is if you get a teacher you think cares about you, but really doesn't. I've been honored to get the teachers who seem to care. My friends haven't been so lucky and it makes me sad.

They try to quell the bullying, but that doesn't stop boys from bullying me all the time. I'm so done with being their new "victim". There are only four guys I trust with my life right now. That's how bad guys have traumatized me. Did they do anything about it?

They did not which is the whole reason why the political ideals going on behind the scenes need to stop. Pay offs shouldn't be a thing yet they are. Politics are not allowed in a public school by law, but look behind the scenes and it's a thing. Friends tell me kids who are awful start on their sports teams because of who their parents are. PUBLIC SCHOOL IN AMERICA EVERYONE!!!!! Please make it stop.

Public school needs reform and it need it badly! I can't sit back while bribery is happening. I can't sit back whilst others are bullied to the point of suicide. I can't sit back and watch people fall apart because of mental instability. MAKE A CHANGE!!!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh as you can see my experience isn't the best. Share your experiences with your school district if you want! Now that's not all my experience, but that's the gist.
