Alive once more Una Tayuun must learn what it is like be bound to a person who she wasn't expecting to be a literal goddess.
Ree: "Alive once more Una Tayuun must learn what it is like be bound to a person who she wasn't expecting to be a literal, foreign goddess. "
Notes:
Una Tayuun:
Her Encyclopedia Eorzea entry:
"Formerly of the ~~Circle of Knowing~~[Path of the Twelve, actually, yeah], Una was once part of a crew that included the pugilist Percevains and the archer Satzfloh. Following the Calamity, the Seeker of the Sun and Keeper of the Moon (hybrid) briefly lost her memory, but was quick to recover. Alas, she was struck down at the age of twenty-eight in the Garlean raid on the Waking Sands."
“I think Una Tayuun might've been one of the few Echo users in her party of surviving adventurers, but she suffers from some degree of memory loss as well, too. She has a strong inclination that she was a Scion, but they weren't called the Scions during back then, way before the Calamity itself had happened.”
Her close friends: Percevains Lothaire and Satzfloh
Her 1.0 dialogues:
Best keep yer nose out of trouble, lad/lass. That's my speciality. Heh heh heh heh.
It looks as if they did a little more than scouting, I would say.
Her 2.0 dialogues:
Why don't any o' these blokes know who I am? I swear I was one o' them Scions o' the Seventh Dawn! Only we didn't have such a fancy name back then, an' the headquarters was in a far more convenient location. At least, I think it was... Or is me mind playin' tricks on me? Gods, what's wrong with me? Why can't I remember it more clearly?
It won't be long before everybody sees us for the heroes we is!I'm startin' to wonder if it's worth the hassle to prove who we was.
The Waking Sands sure is busy these days. Fresh-faced 'dventurers eager t' make their mark, famous folk like you, Kalea, runnin' off t' face the bleedin' Lord o' Crags...
Maybe it's time for me an' the boys to retire. 'Venturin's a dangerous callin', after all—be a little slow, be a little late, just once, an' that's that.
I finally remember... Who I am... …
Her Our Unending Journey fan comic dialogues:
Wassat? Yer lookin' for a healer, are ya? Well, G'luck, I got me own party t' worry about, so g' ask anyone else!
Her dialogues I have made up:
I… I was once a part o'... Oh….
An' since me mind's still sortin' it all outs after all. Just… Being this… Now a 'Watcher' as she had called it, 'though temporary as it is. This newly be-gifted role an' titled position I hold, much like he does.
—
Sometime after dying in Waking Sands raid (and being freed from PotD for her soul's entirety), Una wakes up in Central Coerthas with no memory of what happened after that, barely dressed, and with a pouch over filled of gil/ a ring on her right hand, and it's around her waist she now looks confused and her only hint is the object inside the pouch that was once Kalea's now left in her possession, as she gets up from the cold, snowy ground. Was fiddling around in some ARR New Game+ and wondered about Yda/Lyse from ARR to Stormbloood. So broke out the Crime Tools.
Especially since poor Urianger's ARR model is...well, it's interesting what sun and dust'll do to a man. Or Estinien's original default model versus his later custom face (and its lack of lips). Then there's the fact that Exarch's model is just a catboy with a perma-shadow over his eyes, while the crystallization is part of the robes.
Anyway, for our perky Pugilist, they kept her skin, hair, and eye colors all the same--though my lighting in these shots is off--but she apparently grew her hair out over the course of Heavensward. The main differences I see in the custom face model are the nose, lips, and eyes; the latter I've noticed especially for customized models is that their eyes are nothing like player-available eyes.
Otherwise they tried to keep her as close to the base model used in ARR as they could before customizing her for Stormblood forward. They tried to keep close to the general shapes, just giving her a unique look when it comes to the details. Which works, really, as if I give my Midlander OC Lyse's hairstyle, Aeryn looks a little too much like a palette-swap of the character.
Also--if one could in the character model options--put a traditional Highlander tattoo on the ARR model's face (per Fordola's pre-Endwalker short story), and we have a good base image for Actual Yda Hext as she may have appeared in said short story, and/or at Lyse's age (as the timing of her being able to fight the Mad King's forces, and Gundobald being confused as to why "Yda" looks so young still in HW, plus the pre-EW "Tales from the Twilight" story, indicates Yda was at least 10 years older than Lyse, putting her at mid-to-late 30s had she lived).
Like I'm convinced that the hairstyle seen in ARR is Yda's that Lyse mimics because from old screenshots or videos from 1.0 I've seen (perhaps from an Echo flash back or something) set sometime before she died (depending on the year of the story or something in those, and if it's Echo flash back it definitely varies for sure when looking into tha, still) in the lore that it is her hair style from then, just reused on her, when mimicking her sister at the time. Or at least that's how I'm interpreting it all. I really hope one day they just decide to show off what she actually look like because that would be super cool.

The War of the Magi
The Fifth Astral Era: “Age of Enlightenment”
Encyclopedia Eorzea - Seeds of Magic: “At the dawn of the Fifth Astral Era, as Eorzea was huddling in the bitter cold of the Endless Frost, the people of the realm once more beseeched the Twelve for warmth. It was during this time that a magnificent cathedral was built on the edge of the Black Shroud, a sanctuary where people would fervently pray to the gods and harness the power of their blessings through the use of magic. These rituals rose in prominence as a way for the survivors of the Fifth Calamity to cope with the era’s bleak prospects, and served as a driving force in the realm’s revitalization.”
Raya-O-Senna: “The tale begins some three millennia ago, in the Fifth Astral Era. It was the time of the Endless Frost, when a barren wasteland of snow and rime stretched as far as the eye could see. Food was scarce, and warmth scarcer. The histories hold many a grim tale of those who died in their beds, starving and benumbed. So did our ancestors discover magic, born out of the most fundamental instinct─survival. In time, the winter thawed, and magic was no longer essential for survival. But once awakened to its conveniences, there was no returning to how things once were. Ere long, the people discovered all the myriad ways in which magic could be employed, and civilization flourished.”
Raya-O-Senna: “But tell me, are you versed in the histories? I take from your silence that you are not. No matter, it shall be my pleasure to educate you. The Fifth Astral Era is said to have begun approximately three millennia ago. The ice age that ushered in the Fifth Umbral Era made the land a barren and merciless place, and man was pushed to the limits of his resourcefulness in the struggle to survive. Yet survive he did, through the discovery of magic as we know it─an event which marked the dawning of the Fifth Astral Era.
At first, man was well pleased just to have the means to keep the cold at bay and compete with the other races. But man is nothing if not an ambitious beast. It was not long before he began to seek mightier magicks, hoping to win greater glory. It was this desire that brought forth black magic, the arcane art of destruction, into the world. In order that this force of chaos be kept in check and balance preserved, at roughly the same point in history, white magic, the arcane art of succor, came into existence.”
Encyclopedia Eorzea - The Age of Enlightenment: “The first Sanctum of the Twelve is believed to have been erected around the dawn of the Fifth Astral Era. After years of disuse, the original structure fell into ruin, overgrown by the thick brush of the Black Shroud and lying forgotten until after the Seventh Umbral Calamity when it was unearthed and restored to its former glory. In the modern age, it also serves as a hall wherein the gods bear witness to the declaration of eternal bonds between lovers.”
Encyclopedia Eorzea - The Sanctum of the Twelve: “Ths skyscraping ivory cathedral was built following the Age of Endless Frost - a dark period in which the realm was overrun with famine and disease - to serve as a place of refuge and respite for all who sought succor. Soon after, however, it fell into ruin and was all but forgotten… until the advent of the Seventh Umbral Era saw need for its use once again.”
Encyclopedia Eorzea - Seeds of Magic: “As the harsh climes subsided, the people once again set out across the realm. Small settlements grew into towns, then cities, each with their own unique culture. The universal worship of the Twelve splintered as the denizens of these communities sought to assert their newfound sense of identity by choosing patron deities to protect them. These widening differences in culture, religion, and approaches to the arcane arts would lead to intense contests for supremacy between nations.”
Encyclopedia Eorzea - Lalafell: “Originally an agrarian people hailing from the southern islands, the Lalafell gradually migrated to Eorzea over the years in pursuit of trade. In the Fifth Astral Era, they played a key role in the foundation of the city of Nym on Vylbrand, as well as the mystic city of Mhach in the lowlands of Yafaem. When both civilizations fell to the Sixth Umbral Calamity, the Lalafell were forced to seek new homes. The Nymian Lalafells employed their seafaring talents and returned to the south sea isles, while the survivors of Mhach wandered the lands before eventually settling in the wastes of Thanalan.”
Encyclopedia Eorzea - A Precursor to War: “Fledgling cities emerged around the three-hundredth year of the Fifth Astral Era, and for the next two and a half centuries, the number of city-states would grow to twelve - each paying tribute to a unique god or goddess of the Eorzean pantheon. These city-states, however, lacked the stability of their modern-day counterparts, and the onset of the Age of Enlightenment was rife with turmoil, with territorial borders endlessly redrawn as smaller domains found themselves ravaged, divided, or integrated into larger populations.
By the thousandth year of the Fifth Astral Era, the realm’s sovereign nations numbered six, the most prominent among them Mhach, located in the western basin of Yafaem; Amdapor, situated on the plains of central Aldenard (or what is now the South Shroud); and Nym, spanning the western coast of the Isle of Vylbrand. In the latter half of the era, the city-states which had heretofore weathered centuries of intermittent upheaval would find themselves embroiled in a feud of an entirely different scale.”
Encyclopedia Eorzea - War on the Horizon: “The peoples of Eorzea flourished in the peace brought about by the impasse between the black and white schools of sorcery. Following in the footsteps of Mhach and Amdapor, other city-states began developing their own forms of spellcraft in attempts to further their societies. This approach to the achievement of prosperity was vastly different from that taken by the Allagans of the Third Astral Era, eschewing technological growth for advancement of a more arcane nature. However, progress would come with a hefty price, as man would soon become drunk on the might that arcane puissance would bring him. Societies built upon foundations of magic were forced to sacrifice their natural surroundings as vast amounts of aether were drawn from the land in order to maintain the cities’ magnificence. The realm’s enlightenment had become a double-edged sword; each mage city maintained the facade of an edifying heritage while secretly honing their offensive magicks.
One need not be an oracle to see that this interlude of peace would soon draw to an end. The mages of Mhach silently turned their eyes to the dark, seeking to slake their expansionist ambitions by amassing an army of voidsent thralls. Amdapor kept their outward appearance as a rich bastion of arts and culture, but daunting sculptures of its ‘guardians’ soon appeared in every corner of the city. While the actual catalyst for the war remains lost to time, it is known that the frequency of political and military posturing between the two nations increased in dramatic fashion as the realm approached the mid thirteenth century, and ere long the entirety of Eorzea became entangled in an inescapable web of strife. The War of the Magi had begun.”
Nenekko Neko: “The fifth Astral Era was an age of untold wonders, when the arcane arts burgeoned and the great civilizations that commanded such powers flourished. Alas, this age of enlightenment would not last. The War of the Magi brought the great floods of the Sixth Umbral Calamity, which swallowed once-proud nations and left naught but a battered wasteland in its wake.”
Encyclopedia Eorzea - The Age of Enlightenment: “Concerning the rise and fall of the early civilizations of the Fifth Astral Era, historians believe there is still much to be gleaned from yet-undiscovered relics that remain hidden within the shattered ruins of the fallen cities. The rush to salvage these priceless artifacts, however, has pit Eorzean scholars in pursuit of knowledge against the avarice of ruthless treasure hunters.”
Fifth Astral Era Timeline
Year 1 5AE (c.3000y/a) - Through prayer and devotion to the Twelve do the survivors of the Age of Endless Frost discover magic and with it survive until the ice recedes.
c. Year 300 5AE - By this time nomadic tribes have formed small settlements across Eorzea and the first fledgling cities are born. Amdapor the first and greatest of these in central Aldenard. For the next 250 or so years, the number of cities would grow to twelve.
c. Year 500 5AE - Lalafell from the south seas settled on Vylbrand’s western coast, establishing the maritime city-state of Nym. The city-state of Mhach is also settled around this time in the lowlands of Yafaem.
c. Year 800 5AE - In the city-state of Mhach, a sorceress by the name of Shatotto Shato is born. This gifted young mage goes on to secure her legacy in history by discovering the means of using ambient aether to fuel powerful black magicks. Mhach uses this newfound power to rise above the constant squabbles of neighboring city-states, and reduces its enemies to rubble.
c. Year 1000 5AE - Eorzea’s city-states now only number six, of these only Mhach, Amdapor, Nym, and Skalla are known. In order to combat the advance of the Mhachi, Amdaporian magi develop the art of white magic. At an impasse, the six remaining city-states each begin developing and expanding their own mystical arts for the coming war.
c. Year 1250 5AE - Centuries worth of political tension boils over and the War of the Magi erupts across Eorzea. For nearly 300 years the war rages on without signs of abating. Skalla eventually falls to the might of Mhach. Nym, despite its size, succeeds in repelling Mhach and Amdapor’s forces.
c. Year 1500 5AE - Nymian traders arrive in Nym after being thought lost in a terrible storm at sea. The traders are carrying a plague that soon spreads throughout Nym. Fear grips the nation and those afflicted are entombed within the Wanderer’s Palace.
Year 1510 5AE - Mhach summons the voidking Diabolos to lead a final, crushing assault against Amdapor. The white mages of Amdapor manage to repel the invasion, but at a terrible cost. More terrible than the lives lost, the cost of the War of the Magi exacts a devastating toll on the world’s aether, causing a severe imbalance in the planet’s elemental aspect.
c. Year 1510 5AE - Twelve Archons warn of the coming Calamity and urge the three nations to set aside their differences. The original Grand Companies are formed and assist in the mass evacuation of each city’s populace to higher ground. Many of Mhach’s citizenry are loaded onto the doomed Void Ark, an airship powered by 1,000 voidsent thralls and the Shadow Queen.
Sixth Umbral Calamity (1577y/a) - For 60 days and nights, torrential rains pummel the evacuees as they flee from rising seas and tidal waves that washed away the sins of the Fifth Astral Era.

Sphene and Wuk Lamat: A Theory
So... There's something that's been on my mind since I first played Dawntrail. And tbh, I'm surprised that I don't think I've seen anyone else come to the same conclusion, because it was really obvious to me.
Yeah uh... ever since like 10 minutes into meeting Sphene, I've suspected that her and Wuk Lamat are each others shards/reflections.
My initial suspicion was largely based on personality, the way that they immediately clicked and seemed to have a lot in common. And then I was like "wait a fucking second, they have almost exactly the same eye color, if not a perfect match," which pretty much cinched it for me.
(Note: technically - since, as far as we know, the Sphene we met was a recreation without a soul - it would have been the original, living Sphene who was Wuk Lamat's shard.)
It's pretty undeniable that they're set up as narrative foils from a character perspective, but I think it goes beyond that. This line in particular grabbed my attention:
That's... pretty direct.
And that's also the big difference between them: Wuk Lamat is someone who is physically strong and was raised as a warrior; Sphene is neither of these things.
The other thing that's standing out to me is that this whole situation between them, where they have mutually conflicting goals? Where one invades the other's world, even, putting it into peril, for the sake of saving their own?
We've seen it before.
Even including the fact that the main character's reflection is already dead.
And after patch 7.1, I'm only more convinced... because guess what?
I daresay we've seen this before too.
And beyond just the interesting narrative parallels between Sphene & Wuk Lamat and the WoL & Ardbert, the fact that Sphene's story clearly isn't over is making me think that this is going to be relevant.
I’ve noticed that quite a few Tokyo Mew Mew posts have put down the wrong ages for the characters, specifically those for the English dub. So, to keep fans from getting confused, here are picture files that 4Kids themselves had made, showing the ages they’ve chose for the characters when making the show into English. Note: The Aliens’ ages were never revealed officially by 4Kids or the original creators. So their official ages are unknown.
And, for comparison, here are the original ages of the characters. These ages came from the official TMM Playstation Game Guide:
Ichigo Momomiya/Mew Ichigo (Mew Strawberry) - 12-13 (7th Grade)
Minto Aizawa/Mew Mint - 12-13 (7th Grade)
Retasu Midorikawa/Mew Lettuce - 13-14 (8th Grade)
Bu-Ling Huang “Purin Fon”/Mew Pudding - 10-11 (6th Grade)
Zakuro Fujiwara/Mew Zakuro (Mew Pomegranate) - 14-15 (9th Grade)
Masaya Aoyama - 13 (7th Grade)
Ryou Shirogane - 15 (Graduated from an American college)
Keiichiro Akasaka - 21
Although, I blame most of the confusion due to the fact that other dubs tend to change their ages as well. So official information, according to other dubs, gets mixed up on the net. For example, in the Serbian dub, due to them dubbing from both versions (1st half from MMP and the 2nd half from TMM) they kept Ichigo’s/Zoey’s original Japanese age of 13 but changed the others around, making her the the 2nd youngest of the group. (Official ages in the Serbian dub: Zoey - 13, Corina - 14, Bridget - 14, Kikki - 11 and Renee - 17.)
Well, I hope that clears that up… or did I just make fans more confused? XD

Mermaid Melody has a super unreleased dub that needs to stream on Netflix yesterday. I mean, can you imagine the Anime Community going bonkers if the old trailer dropped again but for real?
I actually did just read that there was indeed a Mermaid Melody English dub that was never released! It must be caught in licensing hell (either that or because the creators figured the interest is gone now), which is a damn shame. I would love for Mermaid Melody to get a resurgence in popularity! I also think it would be a great anime dub to show to kids.
FF14 Battle Portrait Tutorial
For the past few weeks I was trying to find a way to recreate the battle portrait from FF14 as there was a few characters that I want to see in that style but don't officially have one yet. I think I got it down more or less (see image below) so I thought it's a good time to share what I did.
First of all, I made a few files that would help make life a little easier. They can be grabbed here .
Note: I did use Reshade to do a bit of work at the screenshot stage to help speed up the process but the same effect can be recreated in Photoshop with a vanilla screenshot. There are a lot of tutorials on how to do comic/cartoon effect in photoshop and those would make good bases to work off of.
Step 1: Take the screenshot with the PortraitBase Shader on. I usually take two screenshots. One with "Comic" on and one with it turned off. This is so that I have more to work with if needed.
Step 2: Drag all the screenshots into photoshop and remove the background. In photoshop, arrange the layer so that the screenshot with the Comic lines visible is on top of the one with the effect off.
Step 3: Duplicate the the layer with the "comic" effect and apply Blur->Gaussian blur (radius 0.5)
Step 4: Take a look at the hair. In Eric's case, It still doesn't look blur enough to me so I used the blur tool and blurred it a bit more
Step 5: Create a new layer above the layer in the previous step and use the brush tool to start outlining the edges. Where to outline is up to you but the idea is to make edges defined so that it looks more like a drawing.
Step 6: Duplicate the outline layer and then hide that layer. Step 7: Merge everything under the outline layer. Step 8: Drag and drop the "Texture.png" into the project and Clip it to your character layer. Set the blending of the texture to "soft light". Step 9: Drag and drop the "stroke Texture.png" into the project and Clip it to your character layer. Adjust the size till you are happy then set the blending to "overlay". Step 10: Adjust the opacity settings of both texture layers until it looks good to you.
Step 11: Click on your character layer and go to image->Adjustments->Hue/Saturation (note: you will see I dragged in the official Hades portrait as a point of reference to work off of). Adjust the saturation till you are happy.
Step 12: Go to image->Adjustments->Color Balance and adjust the color till you are happy. In this example, since Eric is also wearing the Sophist robe, I tried to match that color to Hades' Sophist robe color.
Step 13: Once you are happy, drag the "Template.png" into the project and scale that to the size you want. Make sure it is completely covering the character. If it's not, you can just use paint more of it with the brush tool to extend it till it covers everything.
Step 14: Hide the "template.png" layer and select your character layer. Use the magic wand tool to select the outside of the character.
Step 15: With the selection still selected, click on the "Template.png" layer and press delete on your keyboard. You should now be left with a blank in the shape of your character.
Step 16: Drag the"Template.png" layer to be below your character layer. Then click on your character layer and clip it.
Step 17: Click on the "Template.png" layer and add a 2px stroke and shadow to it.
Step 18: Drag "Back_Deco.png" into the project and place it behind your character. Scale it till you are happy with it.
And that's it! Now you can recreate portraits for any NPCs that you want (in theory). A lot of it is also fine tuning to what you want but this should at least give you a decent base to work off of :)
