“Are you an idiot? All animals have the capacity to be dangerous. Hyorin’s really no different…”

He wasn’t dumb, he certainly knew what his pet hyena was capable of, but she hadn’t killed him yet… and the day she tried would probably be the day Kaito let her go into the wild, or something, but for now, they were buddies. He made friends with people who tried to kill him, why not animals?

“Just ‘cause she’s got giant teeth and murders things for fun doesn’t mean she’s a bad kid, she’s just grown up thinking that’s how you do things? Look.” Pulling a very large bone from seemingly nowhere, as per magician skills, Kaito tossed it across the livingroom.

Hyorin wasted no time in viciously flying over the coffee table, knocking over a cup, and catching the bone in her mouth with a blood-curling crack.

“She even plays fetch.”

“There’s a difference between having the capacity to be aggressive and the capacity to be dangerous. A sparrow can chirp and beak and scratch you, but it can’t kill you. A Yorkshire can bite your hand or scratch you or pee on your things, but it can’t kill you. A hyena can kill you while playing or kill you by meaning to do it, that’s dangerous, Kaito-”

And yet, he found himself speechless, flinching back and his grasp on Ren tightening as Kaito just casually threw a bone across the room - sending the large hyena flying through the space after it. A cup crashed on the floor, the dull, raspy sound of its claws on the coffee table and the floor making him tense before its teeth closed on the bone, cracking it with a sharp sound.

“...”

「Your blood pressure has increased.」 Ren helpfully noted. 「And your body is tense. The situation indicates you are ready for a fight or flight response.」

“... Thanks, Ren.”

Oh great, he should have saw this coming!

… And he did. Kaito stared blankly at Aoba, his wonderful speech about health and safety and moving going in one ear and out the other. Because he was nice, he waited until he finished talking, before he spoke up.

“Nah.” Waving a hand, he had to watch out for Hyorin’s head suddenly flicking up in the air and a tingle of drool dripping down. One look at the pillow ensured Kaito of its fate, and he reckoned that he was going to have to find another cushion of its calibre.

Damnit, that was the third one this month.

“Hyorin’s a normal pet, Seragaki. Puppies chew things too, it’s just that Hyorin’s a pretty aggressive kind of dog.” Even though hyenas were predominantly feline.  “Besides, she likes the couch. She even sleeps on it at night.”

Nah. Kaito saw this hyena maul a pillow in seconds, and his answer was ‘nah’ about sending it somewhere more appropriate. How could he think this thing was anything close to being a ‘puppy’?

He was seriously starting to worry about Kaito’s well being, physically and mentally.

“Kaito, the only way that’s a puppy is if you hit your head,” he remarked bluntly as Ren looked between them. “Hyenas are dangerous. You can’t think that this is safe, right?”

“Yeah.” Sitting down on the couch, Kaito scooted – carefully – towards the creature, keeping some odd distance from the female which seemed to satiate her. “Amel gave me her as a present for… something. It was kind of weird, but I’m not gonna say no to a tamed hyena.”

Logically speaking, having a pet hyena was actually only common in areas where they were raised in… Hyorin just sort of showed up. But, alas, she felt spiritually appropriate! Hyena were known as robbers, stealing prey, livestock, and occasionally the souls of adults and children in folklore.

Anyway.

“Ain’t she cool?” He grinned proudly to his pet, who was currently taking a plentiful bite of their pillow. “….. Thanks.” Kaito groaned. “I’m gonna get yelled at for that.”

Even if Kaito spoke highly of his ‘pet,’ he still showed some caution, keeping some distance from it. It was at least... mildly comforting? He wasn’t reckless enough to go around hugging it or something, so that was something.

“Kaito... This is a wild animal. Tamed or not, it’s still dangerous, you know-” And, as if to prove it, the hyena went on to bite the pillow. Well. That seemed friendly. “You should consider... sending it somewhere more appropriate? Maybe a zoo, or a...”

Was there such a thing as a rescue that took in hyenas?

“Um, a rehabilitation center to try to release it in the wild eventually?”

“Okay, so I think we oughta settle the score here.” Kaito gestured to Hyorin, the hyena sitting royally on the couch like a queen. He commended her bold attitude – it reminded him of himself.

So proud.

“Hyorin, this is Ren, Seragaki’s pet Allmate.” Waving an arm towards the tiny blue puffball, he introduced the two animals. Animal and robot. Whatever it was. Hyorin made no inclination that she cared. “Ren, this is Hyorin, my pet hyena.”

This... had to be a dream, right? At least, he hoped it was.

But as he stared at the canid sitting on the couch, there didn’t seem like there was any sign of him waking up anytime soon, his grip on Ren steady as he took in the sharp fangs peeking from its muzzle as the animal let its tongue roll out.

“Kaito... This is a real... Hyena, isn’t it...” It was more of a statement than anything - and, as Ren scanned the creature, the Allmate nodded.

「Yes. It is a hyena.」 Ren agreed, looking at it with his ears pressed back.  「There are records of some being kept as pets, but not many.」

That wasn’t very comforting.

“I’m curious, sir. Where did you and your friend-,” A vague gesture at the dog, who she knows in’t alive, “Come from?”

“Huh?” He blinked at the stranger, his head cocking to the side. Right. Different universes. In the time he’d been sick, he mostly stayed in his room with Ren, and hearing this sort of question still seemed almost odd. “We come from a small island in Japan, called Midorijima. It’s really small, though. Why?”

“Well, there’s always a few of them. The people who are afraid of them, others who don’t believe in ghosts, and the idiots who go and try to find them.”

“I don’t have a problem against them, but.. it’s more as if AIs will replace the companions of real humans and people, y’know? They can’t truly feel emotions like we do, only respond like we programmed them to. Like playing an illusion on yourself.”

“Sounds like an odd thing to be so common, huh...” He wondered out loud, looking down at Ren. “Back where we come from, I don’t think there are many people who give it much thought.”

“Ah-? No, that doesn’t happen at all.” Aoba quickly protested, holding Ren close to himself - the Allmate tilting his head. “Where I come from, Allmates help connect people. Both because they form relationships of their own between each other, but they make some tasks easier, and there’s even something of a game that uses them, called Rhyme. Besides- Ren might have his personality programmed and his emotions too, but he feels almost real. And it’s really nice to have someone like him to talk to, at times.”

yo, i’m back, sort of! i’m still feeling kinda ill but my hiatus is over so here i am.

I have three unanswered threads to reply to that i’ll get back to - at least that I know of. If there’s any I don’t know, or haven’t noticed, let me know - feel free to nudge me if you think I missed your thread, so i can get to it.

I’ll probably work on replies through the week, and get to liking some rp ads through it to start some new threads, so yes! good to be back!

「You are mostly recovered, at least. Keep taking the medication and the symptoms should disappear soon.」

ESPRESSO’S BLACK-TIE GALA

You receive a pink envelope in your mailbox along with the other mail (advertisements, catalogs, etc.) Curious, you open up the envelope up first. It appears to be an invitation!

The invitation is to a formal party at the Koi Art Gallery, hosted by Espresso Beans, next Friday (September 18th, 2015.) The purpose of the event seems to be promoting rising artists. Reading further into the invitation tells you that you can contact the hostess to provide services (of course you’ll be paid), and/or talk to her if you have any questions. You flip the invitation over, and it says in large text, “PLEASE RVSP BY SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2015 IF YOU WISH ON ATTENDING.” You make note of it.

You know you’ll consider going to the party. You’ll finally be able to wear that fancy outfit of your’s!

“Well, I’m with you, aren’t I?” Cain retorted, an easy grin on his face. “But suit yourself; I’m sure you’re plenty fun sober, as it is.” He turned to face the other completely, rather than just turning his head towards him.

“Oh, Little Blue, didn’t you know I’m always trouble? If it’s a talk you want, it’s a talk you’ll get, but I can’t promise I know how to behave.” He winked, finishing the statement with an oddly graceful toss of his drink down his throat.

"I'm sure you can behave, if you want to." he remarked, giving him a flat expression. Honestly, it was more amusing than anything right now - but since he was here just to make small talk, that sort of thing wasn't quite what he was looking for. Given enough time, it would probably get tiring.

Keeping his gaze away from the stage, Aoba took another drink of his soda, making sure to keep the can on his hands. “I haven’t been in a place like this in a while. You-... work here, then?” It was impossible to miss. “It must be an interesting job.”

“I’m quite proud of the fact that I scared some snooping ghost hunters in those places though.” The things she do when you interrupt a perfect nap.

“Believe me, it’s hard to accept he’s just an AI. They’re probably still debating about how AIs might end up being too independent and all that. Guess they’re afraid of blurring that line between humans and technology.” She gave Ren a pat on his head, admiring the work.

“Ghost hunters?” Was something like that for real? The idea of someone wasting their time looking for ghosts was comical, but-- then again, that was just in his world. “Is that a normal thing where you’re from?”

“Blurring the lines... that seems like such an unnecessary thing to worry about. Ren’s an AI but he’s my best friend. It doesn’t matter if he’s a robot.” He ruffled the dog’s fur and, wagging his tail, Ren licked his hand.

「It is my pleasure.」

“Why worry if the lines blur? They are individuals just like us.”

Aoba was a kind person. He couldn’t ignore someone hurt, and he definitely couldn’t walk away from a situation where it looked like they could use his help. In this case... it was no different.

She was a petite girl, looking delicate and almost frail. He had wandered into the area for a delivery, and the sight of her standing there, with blood on her hands and face, immediately left him on alarm as he rushed to her, Ren following after him with his small paws hitting the floor with a light sound of nails against the stone.

“Hey-!” Stopping in front of her, Aoba carefully cupped her face in his hands, wiping the blood on her face - carefully to try not to press against her wound. “Are you okay? What happened-!” Maybe he shouldn’t be so invasive, but seeing a teen girl covered in blood like this-

It made his blood run cold. It felt like something really bad had happened, and he couldn’t stop himself from being concerned as he looked down at his Allmate, frowning a bit before looking back at her. “Ren, where’s a hospital- hey, it’s going to be alright. Where did you get hurt? Did someone do this?”

The girl’s touch was gentle, surprising him and making him look up at her with his head tilted a bit, until he noticed the blood on her hand. Oh- he had noticed the coppery taste in his mouth, but he hadn’t given it much thought other than that.

“Hm... thanks...” He murmured, feeling almost awkward as he raised his own hand to the spot - wincing a bit at the pain. His lip was busted and he would have a pretty bad bruise here afterwards, he could tell that. Oh, well. Not the first time this happened. “I’m alright, it’s just some bruises.”

While he had blood on his face, he hadn’t been lying - some of the brawl had been a blur, but in the end, he had gotten away with what he imagined were some bruises, this one cut on his lip and really... not much else? The worst pain was on his head, though. It felt like it was going to split in half, making him wince a bit as he gave the girl a small smile. In such a peaceful city, he didn’t think he’d have an attempted robbery - but, at the same time, he hadn’t been surprised when it happened anyway, just responding to it like he would back in the Old Resident District.

It was just a gang of kids. He could handle them, right?

The fact that he hadn’t lost anything said yes. The fact that he also came out with some wounds that he couldn’t quite place past the splitting pain on his head was not. But, the girl who noticed him - and came to help him - at least helped him focus on something other than this pain.

“I just need to rest a bit, I guess, and go home to treat these. It should be fine.”
