if your professor tells you to memorize something, get out your flashcards right away. you do not want to be memorizing nucleotide structures last minute. know your shit.
along those lines, knowing the structure, symbols, and properties of each amino acid is incredibly useful.
draw everything out. you cannot learn the mechanism of chymotrypsin or the citric acid cycle by reading about it. draw arrows. color code. look at the bigger picture.
guide to studying biochemical pathways with flash cards and whiteboards by @hexaneandheels
talk through mechanisms and cycles. explain them to anyone who will listen.
read! your! textbook! there is a reason you have it. read the book before lectures so you don’t get lost.
biochem is very cumulative. do not fall behind. do not move on without understanding previous topics. they will come back to haunt you.
ask for help. you’ll probably need it. form a study group with your fellow struggling classmates.

I haven’t seen a single 420 joke at all this month we’re really not ok huh
IT IS VERY REAL!! ALWAYS BE AWARE.
Don’t take them off when you immediately see it. Wait until you get to a different destination bc they’re trying to distract you by getting it off then abducting you. Same thing goes if you find something on your windshield, it’s a distraction so they have time to get you.
WTF? Is this real?

If you find it on your mail box, go on the phone with somebody and move to the nearest public place with a lot of witnesses. Stay there for a while and make sure you aren’t being followed. Arrange that you either can sleep somewhere else or that somebody you trust comes to your place. They are searching for easy targets, make yourself a hard target.
Otherwhise:
Stay aware, keep things you can use to defend yourself on your person (Keys between your fingers, peper spray, taser, etc)
Keep in mind what areas to aim for in a struggel
Always use your palm, elbow or tug your tumb in while striking to prevent injuring yourself.
Be carefull and try to go places in larger groups, preferably with several male friends.
Keep in contact with people and let them know about your where abouts so that not hearing from you in a while raises suspicion.
They like to aim for college students both because of the age group and because it’s more likely that you missing will be noticed late.
If you go out a lot or are searching for a new partner, stay aware. Don’t give your number out to strangers, go clubbing with bigger groups of friends and arrange that some of you stay sober that night, do not leave if you aren’t all together, watch your drinks, you can not trust a cute person you met at a club who brought you a drink, yes that also goes for other women. Do not leave with strangers, potential one night stands are not worth the risk. Do research on the clubs security beforehand, maybe go to the more expensive one with the better reputation, sure you might not be able to go as often but you will be going more save.
Same goes for bars.
All things considered you really want a new relationship try dating within your actual social circle. People your friends have known for a while or maybe long time friends themself. People who are registered at your university and you know have been leaving a social foot print are also more likely to trust. Always aim to go out with people you know others recognize and tell people when you plan to go on a date.
You do not play around when there is human traficing going on in your town guys. Stay save guys.
Reblogging this again for all this additional self defence/safety advice here for if you live somewhere where stuff like this is going on…
Stay safe guys!Yes ALL of you no matter the gender, sexuality, relationship/friendship status etc. And if a person or a situation seems “off”, trust your instincts and nope the f*ck outa there, no matter the time.
Goodness Gracious, Stay safe! I know I haven’t posted anything in awhile, and I’m working on that, but I have to share this! Please be safe, these things are terrifying! <3
Can I offer something that I (always) add to these types of posts??
Get you some bug spray.
I’m talking like Raid, or Bengal. That shit that you spray cockroaches with. Keep a can in your car, or tbh in your purse if it will fit. Let me explain why:
Temporary blindness. The chemicals in these sprays, when sprayed into the eyes and between, can cause temporary blindness. They also stink, and can cause breathing problems.
This was recommended to us by a police officer, who is friends with my parents. My sister was too young to legally carry a gun when she started her nursing clinicals, and she couldn’t take a pocket knife into the psych hospital either. So my parents asked him for recommendations and he told us bug spray.
Most people don’t think about it, but it’s very potent, and you can spray some of them pretty far away.
The thing about blindness is true btw. I accidentally sprayed myself in the eye with Raid when I was like 12 and couldn’t see out of that eye for a solid 3 hours.
Get some bug spray. People are crazy.
Also, remember where the major arteries are just in case you have to stab someone with keys/knife/anything. Femoral is in the leg/groin area, jugular is in the neck. I’m not saying you should kill someone, but people tend to get very much protective of their major blood supply ways so use that to your advantage.
Not sure who needs to see this, but if a Service Dog starts backing into you, pushing you away from their handler, or they sit down at a leash distance from their handler
You Should Move Away.
They are performing a task known as "spacing" or "blocking" that helps reduce or prevent anxiety in their handler.
They are NOT "asking for pets" or being disobedient or asking to be spoken to. All you have to do is stay back from the dog and handler.
This is not a capslock PSA because I'm not sure how many people that don't have a SD actually know this is a trained task.
I did NOT know and this is both very cool that SDs can be trained for this, and very important that we all know how to respect it.

THIS IS SO IMPORTANT
Reblogging because I care about you guys
Important
Rohypnol has an INCREDIBLY salty taste to it. It’s disgusting. And it also isn’t a drug that acts immediately! The minute you notice the salty taste, you have about 5-10 minutes to get somewhere safe or call an ambulance, and it CAN be fought if you’re aware of it. It will make you woozy, it will make you so dizzy you can’t stand upright, it will certainly make you unable to walk properly, but if you struggle to remain conscious you can get about 20 extra minutes of consciousness from the drug before it will knock you out completely. If you’re in a public place, and the person who drugged you is trying to take you somewhere private, start. a. fight. Insist as LOUDLY and as VIOLENTLY as you can that you refuse to go anywhere with them. Odds are they’re trying to make as little of a scene as possible as they drag you away, and if you’re putting up a fight and very clearly ‘drunk’, eyes will turn on them and they’ll either need to let you go, or cause a serious scene, which they don’t want. Don’t just act like you’re just protesting being taken home, though. Fight like your life depends on it even if they aren’t assaulting you. Cause. A. Scene. That’s the last thing they want.
Everyone should reblog this!
Very useful.
To that last one that shit is NO JOKE
Boasting the FUCK out of this
tl;dr my country is literally on fire and the politicians refuse to help
I know there’s a lot going on in the world, but you probably haven’t heard about what’s happening in Australia.
we’re on fire.
approximately ¼ of australia’s population is in catastrophic fire danger. A catastrophic fire level means your only chance of surviving is leaving before it’s too late.
it’s Spring in Australia, and rainforests aren’t meant to be dry enough to burn, yet at the time of writing this (11/11/19) there are 71 active fires in NSW (43 out of control), and 51 active fires in Queensland - not including those that have already burned before now, and there are more in other states. Sydney is already rated “catastrophic”, the first time this rating has ever been used there since its creation in 2009. That’s right, we had to add yet another level of destructiveness, because “high”, “very high”, “severe”, and “extreme” were no longer adequate. To quote the Fire Danger Ratings, “for your survival, leaving early is the only option”. conditions tomorrow will be the worst they have been, and people are evacuating as we speak. the fire fighters are preparing as best they can.
This isn’t just about people losing their homes; people have died and will die, countless animals have already lost their lives and many more will still perish. our land, our lives, and our hope is up in flames and will soon be nothing but ash. the annual fire season has not even begun yet. this is only the beginning. my native land is burning, and there is nothing i can do to stop it.
the government refuses to acknowledge that we are in a climate crisis. the fires have never been this bad. we have been in severe drought for more than a year which has only contributed to the force of these fires. the Prime Minister Scott Morrison has done nothing but send his “thoughts and prayers”. He will not accept aid from other countries because he is too egotistical to admit that we need it. All the while the people of this land are suffering. Climate change needs radical human change to be combated. we are already seeing the results of years of indifference, and this is barely the beginning of something that will only get worse the longer government’s and big companies refuse to act to counteract climate change.
Our government has also cut funding to Fire and Rescue NSW by 35.4%, the Rural Fire Service by 75.2%, and QLD Rural Fire Service by 26.42%, resulting in closures of services; they don’t have the resources to cope. We are fighting a losing battle against the results of climate change. and this is only the beginning.
12/11/19 UPDATE
At least 6 million people today are prepared for evacuating. There are strong winds, low humidity, and high temperatures which will only exacerbate and encourage the fires. Authorities have warned that there aren’t enough fire trucks to help everyone, so unless you are prepared to the maximum, you need to leave. 600 schools and TAFE’s across NSW have been closed due to the fires, with others in Queensland closing due to air quality being virtually unbreathable due to smoke. Rural Fire Service Deputy Commisioner Rob Rogers said the state was as prepared as it could be, with military aircraft on standby to rescue people from fires if needed.
As Queensland and New South Wales deal with these unprecedented bushfires, there is a lot of talk about how to stop, or at least reduce them. David Bowman is a professor of environmental change biology at the University of Tasmania and he says the short answer is that climate change is making a bad situation worse.
But it’s also much more complex than that. Much of Australia’s natural biodiversity has evolved to withstand and even stop bushfires due to a multitude of species being in one area. Eucalyptus trees encourage fires as they help spread seeds, but other species are naturally flame retardant and help to curb the fires. The issue is that so much of the native bush has been cut down for farming and agriculture that the natural fire defence has virtually been destroyed. Australia is the leading country in mammal extinction, as well as one of the worst 7 for biodiversity loss.
There have already been significant harmful impacts to wildlife, with entire ecosystems up in smoke and individual species affected, including around 350 Koalas presumed dead – all before the fires have reached their peak.
my heart goes out to the victims of the current fires, which we know have been exacerbated by the decline of native biodiversity. Australian conservation efforts need a radical overhaul. Mitigating the intensity of these fires, mostly set by humans and their activities, can be achieved by restoring our native ecosystem engineers, such as bandicoots, bettongs and potoroos.
These species help to maintain healthy forests by continually turning over and breaking down forest leaf litter, thereby drastically reducing fuel load. In their absence, fires are more intense, often reaching the treetops, which can affect populations of species already on the brink, like the Koala.
Slow growing and ancient Australian East coast temperate forests are of global significance, as these forests have some of the highest carbon storage on the planet. Fires of this intensity threaten their very existence but managing wildlife to reduce fire intensity and protect forests is under-appreciated for its importance in reducing the release of carbon into the atmosphere.
If you wish to donate to the NSW Rural Fire Service, follow this link. I’m not sure if it works for countries outside Australia, but if you can spare some money, please try
Support your local brigade - NSW Rural Fire Service
Or you can donate to the Red Cross who have set up many shelters and are providing first aid, and are trying to fund small kits to provide families with basic necessities
Where there's disaster, an emergency, conflict or crisis, your support means Red Cross will be there.
Current fires across Australia (12 November 2019) (not to scale of area affected):
Area comparison for aid in understanding the sheer size:
Fires are not short events, many of these fires are likely to continue burning for weeks to months.
An update on the fire situation, because they’re reached Victoria down south now. We’ve started to feel the heat down south and now had a cold snap. 21st November.
This is eleven days later and still burning.
The important points:
Fire season hasn’t even officially begun yet.
It was the hottest November night in a century last night
The rainforests are dry enough to still burn
The Liberal government not only cut funding to firefighters, but continues to deny climate change and the climate crisis.
We are now also at risk of thunderstorm asthma.
Thunderstorm asthma occurs when the grasslands are super dry, and then along comes a thunderstorm which not only disturbs and picks up all the pollen, but the sudden moisture causes the pollen particles to fragment and break apart, becoming multiple smaller pollen particles, each equally capable of triggering asthma, only now there is more of them. And those particles are small enough to avoid getting trapped in the nose, and go straight to the lungs.
This overwhelms emergency services and people die.
We have always been a country of fire and flood, but not at this time of year, not this bad. The climate is changing. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
