I really enjoy how Kohane’s dad is set up as a foil for Harumichi in Period of Nocturne, despite not getting a character model.

The event opens with Harumich and Kohane’s dad trying to keep their respective children away from Street Music. Kohane’s parents are worried for her safety. Their concern was never with the music itself, it was with the live houses. They never wanted to take their daughter away from her newfound passion. Meanwhile, just before this Harumichi is introduced in this event doing just that. He calls street music “childish”, refers to Toya’s training as “playing around”, and demands that his mini-me stop with the childish excuses and return to his “responsibilities” and play classical music. His son’s desires and passions aren’t what’s important. What Harumichi values is Toya falling in line and continuing the Aoyagi family business.

It takes only one episode for Kohane’s parents to come around. Her father agrees to watch their live show and talk to An. He makes the effort to understand his daughter and meets her halfway. After all, he was only concerned with her safety and she wanted to show him that she would be safe. In contrast, Harumichi never did the same for Toya. Whenever Toya attempted to explain his passion for street music and his friends, he was told to grow up before his childish decisions could ruin his life. Toya was the one who had to meet Harumichi halfway, struggling the entire event to find the words his dad would be open to hearing.

This all culminates in the battle in episode 7. The group easily spots Kohane’s dad, holding a big camera to take photos and cheering his daughter on. He even tells some of his fellow audience members proudly that his daughter was part of the group that impressed them so much. Meanwhile, while Harumichi did go to the event, Toya couldn't see him. He didn't cheer Toya on or show his pride. Heck, Toya even thought that Harumichi didn't go until he got home.

All this to say, I've been trying to do An research for my FOW fic, but I keep walking away with tidbits that make me love Kohane even more

It's never done that before so I looked it up and turns out Roku TVs have added all sorts of creepy things in the privacy section since I last checked.

One of which being they take screenshots from what you're watching and send them to third parties to identify it.

PSA - Do not buy an LG smart TV. They just added a line to their terms of use that it's the user's responsibility to inform any guests in their house that by entering they consent to be recorded, in order to comply with wiretapping laws. That thing is literally recording you.

You can find tutorials online telling you how to open that thing up and physically remove the mic and wifi module. Frankly I don't trust anything less.

one argument you often see about fanfiction is that it's like 'training wheels' writing? like 'oh it's fine to do that while you're still learning, it's easier than coming up with your own ideas'. and I have to say I have just never agreed with that.

in my experience it's actually pretty common for newbie fanfiction writers to gravitate towards coming up with OCs rather than writing about the canon characters (hence the infamous Mary Sue); this suggests that many people find that 'easier' than attempting to write about pre-existing characters.

I would say that recreating the characterisation, mood and general vibes of an existing work of fiction is in fact a skill in and of itself that's acquired via practice. A common compliment delivered to fanfiction writers is how well they have captured the spirit of the original work. Inexperienced fanfiction writers fail to do this.

When creating an original character you can, ultimately, say anything about them and now it's canon bcos you created them and you said so. conversely, well, if you are covering a well known song and start playing the wrong notes people will notice immediately.

In addition: a lot of fanfiction, IMO, is in actuality a form of metafictional literary analysis. a story where two characters sit down and talk about their feelings about a canonical event? literary analysis, which is of course a skill. Sometimes fanfiction is bad bcos the writer is not good at interpreting texts.

finally I have made this point before but you never really see anyone suggesting that fictional works based on existing public domain texts are on 'easy mode'. is it 'easier' to write something based on a copyrighted work than a public domain work? Of course it isn't.

A major strength of the transformative work is its ability to create dramatic irony. If a fanfiction's emotional resonance is dependent on being familiar with the source material that's not necessarily a bad thing. sometimes it's a sign that the author has done a really skillful job of engaging with said source material.
