So my roommate and I got these Rudolph Christmas coloring books a couple of weeks back. Since it’s finals week, I wanted to ease my mind into studying by coloring. First time opening the book and I saw this picture..
And I thought to myself

The Man (I didn’t want to turn this into a DC/Marvel thing, but that’s where the words and brain took me)
I have been reading comics for almost two decades. I have *nothing* on my shelf written by Stan himself, as near as I can determine (although my Marvel Unlimited subscription belies that slightly). And yet....
He did more than just usher in a more successful era for a pulp publisher, he brought us all into a world filled with heroes less super. Peter Parker never needed a spider-bite to be compassionate. Steve Rogers sans serum would always have done his best to fight fascism. The Fantastic Four were Family ‘fore the “cosmic rays”, Thor was worthy, always, with or without a warhammer. Superman was perfect. An outsider, with infinite strength and wisdom, fighting for perfect justice and always prevailaing. Batman was perfect. The peak of physical human condition, the peak of man’s ability to observe and understand. Wonder Woman was perfect, ideally compassionate and wise and unstoppable. Bruce Banner is...not. The Hulk is incredibly defined by his flaws and failures. Trapped in a green skin of guilt and anger, Bruce can never be content with himself. But not a word of that means that he can’t be a hero, too. Tony Stark is....not. He envisions a future and is eternally frustrated with a world that can’t keep up (never mind how impossible a task that is). He is defined by his anxiety, his fears, his self-pity....and he still puts on a suit of invincible armor to protect us all. The X-Men are...not. Trapped in a world that, for story reasons, cannot and will not accept them, they try to remind us that the ideal of cooperation and coexistence is important even as it seems inaccessible. Their uncanny ability to remind us that tolerance is of tremendous importance inspires far more than the original intended audience. It’s easy to look at the Flash or Green Lantern and want to be them. It’s harder to look at sad sack Peter Parker and realize that he’s just as good. And that difficulty makes the difference. And always, Stan allowed us along for the ride. Invited, nay, begged us to come. How do I know this? Because the last two decades of comics on my shelf tell me so. Because Bendis’s Ultimate Spider-Man is almost entirely an homage to Lee and Ditko. Because The Ever-changing Avengers keep fighting the foes that no one hero could withstand. Because Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Ms. Marvel follow exactly in the tradition that so many prior comics have themselves followed. As Runaways did. As Nova did. As many comics before and since did. And if that isn’t a legacy worthy of a legend like Stan, I don’t know what is. Excelsior. May your memory be a blessing.

We get a lot of big “world-cities” in sci-fi. Trantor in Asimov’s Foundation. Capitol in Card*’s Worthing. The City of a Thousand Planets. Coruscant in Star Wars. But we always see them near the height of “civilization”.
Civilizations don’t collapse the way we think, with barbarians storming the gates, slaughtering everyone and looting everything and leaving only smoldering ashes behind (indeed, only states do that, as Rome did to Carthage). Civilizations fall much more “softly” than that.
But RPGs are about stories. So what happens when Trantor falls to rubble, leaving only ruined corridors, little to no agriculture, commerce is effectively dead, etc?
What happens when a corpse is left out in the wilderness? The carrion eaters arrive. Enter our....heroes?
There’s quintillions of credits to be made from sacking the former galactic capital after all. Those ruined corridors have wiring and signage and art and plating and if nothing else, refined metals. Conduits. Piping. The raw materials are worth something when we destroy a modern building- what’s a modern planet’s worth? Enough to draw competing freelance demolition crews.
And if it’s been a few hundred/thousand/million years because space travel is slow, and if some mutagenic compound has leaked out of the life support system....you’ve got a planet-sized dungeon, more treasure than Han Solo can imagine, and every reason to send your blue-collar interstellar party there. *Fuck that asshole, but it’s something I’ve read.

I finally have a dedicated writing device. It’s a shitty acer Chromebook with no frills whatsoever. But I’m not logging in to FB or installing lots of games or what not, and it’s got a grown-up keyboard and everything! So yay, I finally have the right tool to write with. Now to fucking do it.

No but the history behind this picture is really interesting
The reason that everyone always looked miserable in old photos wasn’t that they took too long to take. Once photography became widespread it took only seconds to take a picture.
It was because getting your photo taken was treated the same as getting your portrait painted. A very serious occasion meant so thst your descendants would know that ypu existed and what you looked like.
But one time some British dudes went to china to go on an anthropological expedition, and they met some rural Chinese farmers and decided to take their pictures. Now, these people weren’t exposed to the weird culture of the time around getting your photo taken, so this guy just flashed a big grin during the photo because he was told to strike a pose and that’s the pose he wanted to strike.
I think painted portraits and old photos give us the idea that in general people were just really unhappy because those are the visuals we have. This is so refreshing.

But I had an English instructor for AP Eng in High School who, I think, was the best of normal white men - smart, aware, tried to grow everyone rather than just impart knowledge. It was a great introduction to what learning COULD be like before I hit college. 25. I’ve done a LOT of ‘puff things, but just today, I stayed up late to finish laundry and reinstall Windows 10, despite having hard a long day at work. The laundry was mostly my partner’s, and the laptop is her daughter’s. There’s been worse ways to spend an evening.
