“It’s midnight, where the hell were you?!”

“Stop keeping your phone in silent, you got me worried!”

“Blood? Are you bleeding?”

“I don’t like the idea of you walking down the streets all alone.”

“I thought I would never see you again…”

“We should get you to hospital.”

“Where did all those bruises came from?”

“I have the right to be worried!”

“Have you been drinking? You look terrible.”

“Sleep at my place tonight.”

“I don’t feel safe letting you be alone when you’re in that shape.”

“Please talk to me about it.”

“Let me take care of you.”

“You need to rest now. Don’t move.”

“How many times have I told you to not go there?”

“You could’ve died, you know…”

“I don’t care if you don’t want my help, I’ll do it anyways.”

“You really need to stop drinking. I’m serious.”

“This time you got yourself into a hospital. I think that’s a sign.”

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“You need to stop doing stupid shit like that or you will get yourself killed.”

“I’m your friend, of course I care!”

“You know I’m always here for you, right?”

“You’re not okay.”

“I’m just trying to help you.”

he nodded in affirmation after all while not having been here for a long duration the trust he felt for the people here , easily 100 times more than any other individuals he’d met. 

huh ? 

it shouldn’t have surprised him really , thinking back to his first days even if his joining was voluntary  “  i’m not going anywhere   ”  hand tightening again to reinforce his words. “  we’ll be sharing the same room and besides i don’t want you to get lost , it’s pretty big.   ” the latter a slight joke but a bit hard to catch given his serious tone.

Sabo heaved a relieved breath, only belatedly trying to mask it by pursing his lips and breathing out extremely slowly -hopefully the motion wouldn’t catch the older boys eye. After finally letting go of his breath he speaks again.

“We’ll be in the same room?” sabo echoed back. Another wash of relief taking over him. Sharing with someone else felt right, it felt much better than the idea that he’d be on his own in the darkness. Not quite picking up the joke he blinks at the other and frowns very lightly “I wouldn’t get lost...”

it was not the question he expected but given the circumstances it was a valid one , one part of him wanted to tell the blunt truth another that weighed heavier in the face of the clear fear and uneasiness on the youngers features “    i’ve been here long enough to know  - ” a slight attempt of a reassuring smile was given.

“  that they are people we can trust  ”

His grip on the other boy tightened before the answer to the question rang out in the hallway. He wanted desperately to believe it, the words were definitely more reassuring coming from someone a little closer to his age. The adults who’d spoken to him before handing him over to this other boy had said similar words...but it felt less trustworthy and he didn’t know why.

“ If you’re sure... ” His mind felt so incredibly lonely, with no memories to inform him of what to feel. So he latched onto the closest safe thing he could see. “ You’ll be around right? You’re not... going somewhere else? ”

he hadn’t expected another child to be brought here , it was always far in between as these kids came here not all of them stayed here some ran away once they woke up. though this one seemed stunned , like a blank page almost aside from the hat he refused to let go of nonetheless he was tasked with the tour of the place.

“   this way is the storage rooms …   ”  his words came to a halt at the sudden out reach but didn’t reject it , memories of his twin lingering in his mind he knew that look too well. 

hand turned firm , perhaps to reassure further that what his words could  “  you are safe here , i promise   ”

Sabo wasn’t even quite sure why he’d reached out like he had. To not be instantly rebuffed was comforting however, the grip on his fingers strong -the feeling of this sort of reassurance was familiar but very distantly so. 

His chin tilted up as the tone of the other shifted from that of a tour guide to something else. 

“ How- ” he cut off the question he truly wanted to ask and changed his mind with a sharp intake of air “ -long have you been here? ”
