Nancy Goldstone: (After the birth of the future Louis XVI) “Maria Josepha would go on to deliver three more surviving children, two boys and a girl………the brother born the year after Louis Auguste…..was the count of Provence….a second younger brother…..was referred to as the count of Artois….and the youngest, a girl, Elisabeth….was known as Madame.”
Madame Clotilde:
coming back to my tumblr just to rant about this book jeez ok so i really liked winter queen and rival queens but maybe it’s because i’m just not that familiar with their histories but with thIS NEW BOOK her tone spoon feeds the reader way more than the past books. the whole genealogy table made me immediately paused but i gave her the benefit of the doubt. i find that she’s skipping a lot that i’m sure she thinks the general marie antoinette fan is already familiar with but then also hinges too much on the spoon feeding—like ‘translating’ Madame Campan’s writing into modern phrases and bulldozing any french terms to just english. it’s definitely a choice😵💫
