how’s katabasis going :0 ive been wanting to read it but waiting for its paperback release!
oooh im excited for u! gonna preface this with a wall of text warning because i can go ON. also i’m only about a third of the way through! absolutely spoiler free though:)
i am enjoying it, i do love a story inspired by the classics and kuang’s allusions and intertextuality is masterful. her prose is smooth and easy to follow and get lost in, and i am super intrigued by the plot which is keeping me turning the pages.
i call katabasis a “day read” because it is not a book i could wind down with, while her prose isn’t complicated it can be dense at times (due to the aforementioned intertextuality), especially as kuang is doing her best to explain it simply as the book goes on.
at the moment, i find the chemistry between the main characters dull (eek!) they have a clear history, but i haven’t decided whether this dullness is an intentional framing of a relationship between two diligent, married-to-their-work students, or if the main character is unlikeable to the extent where she is difficult to read. i may update this post when i finish it because i think i need more information to make my decision on this ! it could be that i have yet to witness their character arcs and the final state of their relationship will be unrecognisable to how it is now. i think that katabasis is actually much less character driven than her other work, but this could very well be intentional as it is her representation of hell — location and space is the major device she is utilising, perhaps suggested by ‘katabasis’ being the word for the hero’s descent into the underworld, with the focus being on this literal journey.
often when i read kuang’s work, i find it quite handholdy (e.g babel), which is completely understandable from a publisher’s perspective as they edit and publish for their majority/target audience (when researching one of my essays at uni, i found a report that was published that said the publisher’s core reader is “susan”, a hypothetical, middle-class, older white woman [ref: rethinking diversity in publishing, saha, anamik and van lente, sandra]), however i think katabasis actually does quite well in not over explaining itself and trusting the audience more than before.
those are my main thoughts so far; overall i think it’s definitely worth the read, whether you adore it or if just to examine how kuang has executed her vision of this genre! she is extremely flexible as a writer and is firmly one of my favourite authors i have ever read :) i am determined to finish this book asap so i can have a decisive opinion on it!!

Hi! Just out of curiosity, why do a lot of people say not to spam likes or reblogs? Sometimes I block people because I find it annoying but is there more to it?
yeah, there is more to it than just “it’s annoying,” even though that part is valid too lol.
the big reason people warn against spam-liking (especially without reblogging) is how tumblr’s algorithm reads engagement.
basically:
tumblr doesn’t treat likes the same way it treats reblogs.
reblogs = actual distribution. they push the post onto dashboards, tags, and new audiences.
likes are passive. they’re more like bookmarks or “i saw this” signals.
when someone goes through an account and mass-likes dozens of posts without reblogging anything, tumblr can interpret that as low-quality or bot-like engagement. when that happens repeatedly:
your posts may stop being pushed in tags
your reach drops
your account can get soft shadowbanned (you won’t get notified, things just… stop performing like they used to)
so it’s not that liking is bad — it’s that only liking, especially in rapid bursts, doesn’t help circulation and can actually hurt visibility over time.
on a social level, some creators also find it frustrating because:
it feels like “consuming” content without helping it spread
reblogs are how creators grow, not likes
spam-likes can feel impersonal or botty, especially if there’s zero interaction otherwise
so blocking people who do that isn’t dramatic or weird — a lot of users do it to protect their reach and keep their space comfortable.
tldr:
likes are nice, reblogs matter, spam-liking can mess with reach and bcs tumblr’s system is weird and unforgiving about it.
omg z what about jason and foreign literature! does he gravitate towards a certain writer/country, what does he think about translations! or any other thoughts u may have :)
im going to try very hard not to project onto him here because global lit and works in translation are literally my areas of research but considering that he is well read across time periods, it's not impossible to assume he's equally well-read in terms of global reach! i specifically think he would enjoy latin american lit for the use of magical realism and sociopolitical theming, with some of his favorites being isabel allende's eva luna and juan rolfo's pedro páramo. i think he would also really enjoy russian and italian lit for philosophical sociopolitical examinations, books like dostoevsky's crime and punishment and machiavelli's the prince (canon)
but largely i don't think jason is all too interested in modern or contemporary lit, he definitely leans much more into the classics as we see in the comics. this ofc isn't to say he wouldn't read works by jack london, pearl s. buck, or even the more modernist writing of latin america's literary canon, etc. but i think his reading habits and personal interests (i.e. his weapon collection) largely place him in medieval / middle ages / renaissance literature!
(more under the cut because this very clearly got away from me + a lil imagine of him and gn! reader on his reading habits at the end!)
i can see him absolutely in love with the classic medieval english texts like sir gawain and the green knight, beowulf, or chaucer's the cantebury tales, especially for the themes and narratives of heroism, fate, and chivalric romances (because we know he's a lover boy! this is probably his favorite literary genre of this time period) placed onto the back drop of large quests full of questions on devotion, loyalty, mortality, and identity; but beyond arthurian lit i think he would truly love global medieval literature, mostly from italy because of the philosophical and political underpinings of the time. i think jason would really love dante's the divine comedy for very obvious reasons (something about traversing the circles of hell probably has him thinking about gotham as its own circle of hell some nights) and boccaccio's the decameron (stories of those fleeing the black death, examination of the human condition at a time of great suffering + explores moral complexities)
and i say this because while he would deeply enjoy the magical realism found in latin american lit (and the adjacent global writing of the time period) i think he would find himself much more entranced by the simplicity of language and the affective narrative experiences in medieval and renaissance lit. the language (even translated) is very matter of fact; for example, la damigella di scalot is written in verse but its story is very much a then b and then c in terms of narrative unfolding aka it's very simple to follow along and doesn't get overtaken by the form all too much as during the time of publication this was a new form of writing and a new way of using language
because of this preference for texts of the middle ages, i think he may tend to read like a historian in that sense, and not a poet: jason is much more focused on the events as they untangle not the lyrical happenings of their unfolding. ofc most medieval, early modern, and literature of the middle ages are all written in poetic forms (except like biblical and philosophical pamphlets) but i can see jason more interested in the narrative of the epics more so than the particular poetic structuring and language of these texts. and we see a bit of this in his strategy, where he deeply contemplates the next moves and the successive events that should take place if all goes according to plan, but not all too much in the poetics of his plotting. dramatics doesn't equal poetics here btw, because he will add the drama, but the poetry of his actions come about because of his emotional attachments to who he is enacting these plans upon. this mostly happens in under the hood where the poetry of his confrontation with bruce—even the way him and bruce fall into this practiced routine of fighting alongside one another before this final confrontation—is because jason was facing and plotting against his emotional boulder, the very presence and idea and thing that made him feel unloved and discarded upon his resurrection in both the moral framework of bruce's mission and the familial admiration of bruce's acceptance.
but when these emotional attachments aren't directly involved in the strategic planning? you get things red hood as a crime lord, where he is incredibly direct and action-oriented about his business i.e. the beheading of the lieutenants for the major eight (iirc!) drug lords in gotham (which imo is very sir gawain and the green knight coded!!!! and probably where he got the idea from). in how he gains control of the gotham crime world and drug trade is quite literally action action action, the moves are strategic and intentional to push his larger plot forward, and the drama is there to ensure it goes in the direction and speed in which he planned it to but it's not inherently poetic if any of that is making sense. and because what you read impacts how you think, and while the lit from the middle ages were written in verse, jason being much more locked in on the actions presented in the text (the beheading games of the green knight for example) very clearly shows up in how he plans and strategizes imo
and in thinking about his love for medieval and arthurian lit, i've always imagined him just rambling incessantly about the inaccuracies in anything that is sold as medieval or of the middle ages. on those slower nights where you both only have the capacity to mindlessly watch a movie while in each others arms on the couch in his apartment, he would suddenly find the energy to start critiquing medieval combat practices, jousting rituals, chivalric courting, costuming, etc.
like imagine watching a knight's tale (2001), which prominently features a character named chaucer, with jason! you were both feeling exhausted and tired, but still wanting to spend time together in a very low-stakes kind of way, you just threw this movie on forgetting that jason would get worked up about the historical inaccuracies of his favorite literary time period. so the moment queen starts playing in the background, he would tense and start saying things like "that's not how jousting works," or "the costumes are so wrong and impractical" as the movie's runtime plays on. there would be a point where he would migrate from his place on the couch to fully standing in front of the television, watching it with his arms behind his back or with one crossed over his front and the other to his lips as he bit the corner of his thumb in deep contemplation, worry very clearly marking his features.
somehow this low-stakes movie night turned into him pausing it every 5 minutes to explain in great detail, with demonstrations of course, how it would actually work in reality. i can see him so clearly pulling his antique weapons off the walls and urging you off your place on the couch to re-enact proper jousting etiquette, of course with the proper safety precautions! he would have to teach you the practices in handling these weapons too to make it accurate to how jousting would've worked, with jason coming around to fix your stance, adjust your footing, fix your grip on the blade, etc. (forced proximity!!!) before having you charge at him from across the space of his apartment. somehow you both would end up on the floor of his living room, pillows and blankets cushioning the floor as a result of your impromptu jousting tournament, as he continued rambling on about tales of knights and kings and these great battles and even greater romances (and maybe its the lighting but as you laid in his arms, eyes trained on his expressions as he spoke animatedly about these things you knew very little about, on knights courting beautiful princesses, but you swore there was a tinge of pink crossing his cheeks)
and on the topic of chivalric romances, i really do think jason would be such a lover boy over the genre—it's something that he would've loved as a child and grew an even stronger appreciation for as a young adult. jason is such a yearner, and i think it's primarily an offset of his trauma and the whole idea of coming back from the dead in that it tends to leave his mind wandering about potentials he would feel himself unworthy of. but he can't help himself imagine love as this beautiful courting, this presence of want in the face of valor and strength, of seeing your lover as through all the clashing of blades and wanting to return to their arms while traversing unknown terrains. i think he would continue this thinking of courting as this ritual of actions in which he would perform something chivalrous and virtuous in order to gain your attention and affection.
so in a relationship, i can see him bringing the ideas and images of the genre into how he interacts with you, where he would see himself as this forsaken knight returning from unsightly quests to your welcoming noble arms that will love him virtuous all until you both are greeted by the dawn. he would perform these courtly rituals where he would do all these random tasks for you, anything you wanted or dreamed of simply because he craved your approval, acceptance, and praise. he would buy you flowers everyday if it meant that upon seeing the colorful display of petals neatly ready on your counter would mean you would come up to him as he sat on the couch reading and rake your fingers through his hair before planting a kiss to his forehead and whispering "i love them, jason" (because yes, the act of naming him in this love would remind him that he is alive and loved and entirely present)
although, as much as he loves the genre, i think he would favor don quixote as it is a parody of the chivalric romance that leaves the hero unsuccessful in the genre's expectations. and we already know jason would sooo project onto that, seeing himself as unworthy of your love, of valor, of recognition—seeing these failures as something inherent to his fate—but the way you place the softest kisses along his knuckles or onto the palm of his hand when you take his into yours as he was getting ready to clean his guns on your coffee table makes him feel that perhaps he could still exist in this genre, even if fate would have him tricked into otherwise
eek sorry it took so long for me to read this i wanted to absorb every single detail!!
YOUR MIND!!!! every single time your thoughts are just so spot on, this is so beautifully thought through and i especially loved ur point about don quixote! he absolutely would be a historical nerd and u reflecting that through how he reads and what he reads (+ pointing out historical inaccuracies) is so so perfect i loved reading every word of this post.
actually screaming at the forced proximity scene my GOODNESS !!! i am absolutely in love with that idea
the romance about his reading was so wonderful to consider; jason, who has experienced such unique pain and anger, gravitating towards themes of love and morality because this pain has not reshaped him. despite everything, his heart hasn’t hardened
