About Translating
Anything I’ve translated on my blog may not be 100% accurate.
I studied Japanese while in school for about four years and have self studied on and off since then through dictionaries, and other online resources. I picked up translating to motivate myself to learn again (and because I found myself down bad for Ring lol). I won’t be posting too much of it because I’m self-conscious about my work but I hope I can share a bit of what I'm interested with everyone else and have a fun time.

I lost my memories, and Ring lied to me saying he was my lover.
But all of that was part of a plan to shock my memories back into me.
Whether it was thanks to that or not— I was able to recover my memories.
…
Ring: Even so, I panicked when I thought you completely believed my lie.
Ring really liked the meatloaf we ordered, and was scarfing it down as he spoke.
Ring: And then I couldn't handle pretending to be your lover any longer, so I confessed everything, but…
Ring: It turns out you were more clever and already one step ahead.
Kate: I was only able to recover my memories because of you. It’s not about who was more clever… or anything like that.
Kate: Thank you again, Ring.
Ring: … I’m glad it helped then.
Ring smiled in satisfaction as he brought another bite of meatloaf to his mouth.
Ring: … Can I ask you another question?
Kate: What is it?
Ring: Are the things you did… how you’d normally act with a lover?
Kate: Things like what?
Ring: Like… linking arms and being very close when walking… and feeding me…
Kate: N-no! I was just trying to throw you off by acting bold…
Ring: I-I see. I’ve never been in a relationship, so I thought that was normal… I was mistaken.
Ring: You smell nice when you’re close, you’re so gentle, your voice is cute too, and seeing you smile makes my chest hurt…
Ring: I was shocked, thinking how all the couples in the world could go through that and still stay together.
Ring: But it's a relief to know that’s not normal.
(Ring isn’t used to being around women, so that might be what’s making him all the more self-conscious around me…)
He probably only thought I smell nice or my voice sounds cute and stuff like that because he doesn't have much experience with women.
I made him embarrassed countless times, to the point his face would turn bright red.
When I recalled how he hugged me at the train station while almost at his limit, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt, like I had unintentionally made fun of his pure intentions.
Kate: Even though it was to find out your true intentions, I’m sorry for acting that way.
Ring: No, it’s okay. I was the one who lied first.
Ring: Besides… it was kind of fun to hang out with you.
Giving Ring a soft smile, I felt my mood lighten up a little.
…
On our way back, we happened to see the lights from the train station from across the street.
Kate: Ring, why did you choose Paddington Station as our “special place”?
(Does he have memories of that place with someone else? But he said earlier on that he’s never been in a relationship…)
Ring: Y-you look at people so earnestly even when they're not your lover, huh.
Kate: I-I’m sorry, I wasn’t doing it on purpose.
I blushed, and Ring awkwardly cleared his throat.
Ring: When you asked if we had any places special to us, I couldn't think of anything at first.
Ring: But then I suddenly remembered something.
Ring: I was so amazed by the steam locomotive I travelled in with Dari and Nica when we came to London.
(So that means…)
Kate: You took me to a place that's special to you.
Ring: Honestly, I haven’t made many memories in London.
Ring: So that really was the only place I could think of taking you to.
Ring put it so bluntly.
But—
Kate: We have real memories together too, don’t we?
Ring: Huh?
Kate: We spent all day together, walking around the city, right?
Kate: From the palace to Hyde Park, and to the train station. Then we went to that restaurant with the delicious meatloaf, and—
Kate: Ah, look over there, Ring. That building is Harrods.
Ring: Harrods?
Kate: It’s a department store that has everything, and it also doubles as a museum.
Light spilled from the shop windows, casting silhouettes of gentlemen with canes and ladies in elegant hats, like shadow puppets in a play.
While I was captivated by the sight, Ring softly gasped too, and was completely taken in.
Standing next to each other, we gazed at the building that resembled a jewel box, and all the memories from today came rushing back into my heart.
Kate: That’s not all.
Kate: We’ve been on all kinds of missions. I think those count as memories too.
Kate: Even though they were missions, we still went to those places together.
Ring: … You’re right.
Under the glittering street lamps, a smile formed on Ring’s face.
Ring: Will we still continue making more memories together from now on?
Kate: Of course.
Bathed in a light that shimmered like a sky scattered with stars, Ring and I exchanged smiles, as if time itself had stopped just for us.

Kate was such a good person, it was laughable.
“There's no night that never ends, and despair never lasts.”
Her mouth only ever spoke beautiful words.
(The environment she grew up in must've been one that allowed her to say such things.)
She and I were nothing alike.
Despite being with Crown, a den of villains, and has most definitely witnessed injustice, irrationality, and gruesome violence, she remained the virtuous woman she was.
She was honest to the point of foolishness, and always wore a smile that made her look like she had never witnessed corruption.
Sometimes…
— That smile was so blindingly bright, I found it unbearable to look at.
…
Kate’s eyes stared straight at me.
(I said too much.)
I let go of her restrained hands and picked up the bouquet that had fallen to the floor.
The ribbon came undone, the flowers were scattered everywhere, and Kate only watched in silence as I picked them up one by one.
Nica: Thanks. For this.
I plastered on a friendly smile and thanked her.
While clearly startled, Kate blurted out something incomprehensible.
Kate: A-ah-res, gu-teh, sum, geh-fu-ah-ta-kuh!
Nica: Huh?
Kate: Wait, hang on, umm… ah-res…
Her clumsy pronunciation reminded me of a certain phrase.
Nica: Are you trying to say Alles Gute zum Geburtstag?
Kate: Yes, that's it!
Her eyes lit up and she gave a sheepish, relieved smile.
Kate: I wanted to say happy birthday in German while giving you the flowers, but…
Kate: The words were too difficult to pronounce, so I couldn't say it very well.
For some reason, the image of her awkwardly scratching her cheek and looking defeated burned itself into my mind.
(Seriously, she’s just so pure or whatever it’s called.)
Reluctantly, I grabbed her arm and pulled her into the drawing room.
…
Not really knowing why I brought her here, I seated Kate on the sofa and sat next to her.
Kate: Um, Nica…
Nica: Okay, Spatzi. Watch my lips carefully and try to imitate me.
Kate tilted her head in confusion when I pointed to my lips.
Nica: Alles.
She was startled for a second, before speaking with a serious expression.
Kate: A-Alles.
Nica: Gute.
Kate: Gute…
Nica: zum
Kate: zum!
Nica: Geburtstag
Kate: Geburtstag
Nica: Alright, now try saying them together.
Kate: Uhh, A-Alles zuu…
She tripped over the words right from the start, and her face turned bright red in embarrassment as she covered her mouth.
I found that amusing to see and reached to grab her wrist.
Nica: You’re so cute, young lady, turning this red over a little slip-up.
Kate: G-geez! I’m taking this seriously, you know!?
(Look at how she gets huffy over such a minor matter.)
(I mean, it's not like she’s someone scary.)
Even though I was still holding onto her wrist, she didn't attempt to push me away.
She took a deep breath and made another attempt at speaking in German.
But it seemed that the pronunciation was too difficult for her, she kept stumbling over the words and frowning in frustration before trying again.
Entertained by the sight of her trying so hard, I leaned back against the sofa and continued watching her struggle.
Kate: I can say each word on its own, but it suddenly gets hard to say when I put them together…
Nica: Want me to give you lessons on German?
Kate: Honestly, I’d love that.
(But she doesn't need to learn to speak German.)
I scoffed internally at her efforts, seeing her serious facial expression.
(She doesn't have any use for the language.)
We weren't going to stay in England forever, and her time as Fairytale Keeper was limited as well.
Nica: Why are you so determined to learn German?
(You could just wish me happy birthday in your own language.)
(It's not as if you need to speak in my language for me to understand you.)
Besides, my birthday is just another day to me.
Kate: That’s because I want to say it in your language.
She said it so naturally and unhesitatingly that my thoughts froze.
(What?)
In my entire life, I had never met anyone like her.
That was the first time anyone said something like that to me.
Nica: Alles Gute zum Geburtstag.
Kate: Huh…?
Nice: Come on, repeat after me. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag.
Kate: A-Alles Gute zum Geburtstag…
When those words reached my ears, I realised that I instinctively smiled.
(Ahh, I seriously can’t deal with this.)
Nica: Well done.
Kate’s face lit up with joy.
Kate: Nica, Alles Gute zum Geburtstag.
Kate: I hope happiness finds you this year.
(How can you say something like that when you barely know me?)
Kate: Well then, I should get going…
Seemingly satisfied, Kate was about to stand up from her seat, but I rested my chin on her shoulder before she could.
Kate: Nica…?
In that moment, I thought I could hear the sound of her heart beating.
Nica: You should really have more sense of danger, Kate.
Nica: Who knows what could happen if you said such adorable things while alone in a room with a man.
Kate: Huh—
I lifted my chin off her shoulder and leaned in just enough to stop right before our lips touched, then I made a kissing sound.
I smirked, amused by her reaction to the sound.
Nica: See? It's dangerous, isn’t it?
Kate instantly turned as red as an apple and pouted.
Kate: — Ugh! If you’ll excuse me!
She stomped toward the door, puffing out her cheeks.
Nica: What kind of exit was that? So cute.
I hated that the thought even crossed my mind.
Leaning back against the sofa, I stared up at the ceiling.
Just then, the door opened again and Ring came inside.
Ring: I just passed by Kate. She looked upset, but I’m not sure why.
Nica: Hey, she’s cute, isn’t she?
Ring: … Did you make her angry?
Ring’s gaze landed on the bouquet in my hands.
Ring: Are you giving that to someone?
Nica: Nope, it was given to me.
He gave me a look of surprise, which was a rare facial expression coming from him.
Nica: Got a vase?
Ring: Yeah, but it’s rare for you to keep something like that.
Ring: You used to throw everything people gave you, because you never know what might be inside.
Nica: Yeah, but this one doesn’t seem to have anything hidden in it.
Ring didn't look very convinced, but he left the room to fetch a vase for the flowers.
Alone once again, I adjusted my hold on the bouquet.
Sunlight was streaming in through the window.
(Yeah, there’s nothing hidden inside this bouquet.)
Nica: But if I had to, I’d say it contains a straightforward and almost foolish kind of hope.
The flowers whose name I didn’t know of, basking in the sunlight, shined so brilliantly.
Nica and Ring: They would be given different amounts of food and be observed by the “adults.” Sometimes decent portions, sometimes tiny or none at all.
Nica would often try to share his food. Ring says that Nica was very strong and kind, and would pat his head to comfort him. The twins are older than Ellis apparently.
It seems Ring has a lot of self-esteem issues. It’s been hinted at previously, but he feels extremely inadequate and incapable of successfully carrying out things.
Darius: Seems to cash in on that feeling. I’m not going to bash Dari, because I don’t know what he’s been through. But when he asks Ring why he thinks Ellis turned down Vogel, Ring says it’s because he failed at convincing him. Darius neither confirms nor denies, but basic manipulates the situation for Ring to go out and handle tasks for him in order to “make it up” to him. Darius also seems to hold the “you can make Nica smile again” shtick to get him to do his bidding.
It’s interesting that Nica isn’t present when he and Dari have this conversation. So, does Nica know about how Darius speaks to Ring….or rather, doesn’t speak at and let’s Ring’s lack of confidence consume him?
Of course, we don’t have all the facts. It’s just what happened and what I noticed in the exchange between them.

Nica: Found you, Spatzi.
Kate: Whoa… geez, please don’t scare me like that.
At around dusk, Nica suddenly appeared behind me without a sound, making me stop in my tracks.
Nica: Sorry, sorry. I just can’t help teasing you whenever I see you.
Wearing his usual mischievous grin, he started speaking with a lighthearted tone.
Nica: Good morning, you’re looking lovely today too.
Kate: Good morning? It’s already evening.
Nica: I'm not a morning person, so I just woke up a while ago.
He continued, stifling a yawn.
Nica: You free right now?
Kate: I don't have any plans for the day, so…
Nica: I’m free. Hey, Spatzi, tell me something interesting.
Kate: Huh??
As he slowly closed the distance between us, an unreasonable request came out of that ever so chatty mouth.
Nica: Come on, do it. 3, 2, 1—
Kate: W-wait a second!
He had me backed against the wall, and I felt like my head was about to burst under the pressure of Nica’s expectant gaze, and then—
Nica: Pfft.
Kate: What.
I blinked, feeling puzzled when he burst out laughing.
Nica: Did that get you flustered? Cutie.
Nica hooked his fingers under the corners of my lips and lifted them into a forced smile.
(He’s teasing me again!)
I swatted his hand away, turned my back to him, and started walking off.
Nica: Oh no, are you angry?
Kate: I’m done.
Nica: Okay, okay, I’m sorry. Come on, cheer up.
Just then, Darius appeared at the end of the corridor—
Darius: Found you. Happy birthday, Nica.
Kate: Huh?
Nica: Ohh, right. It’s today.
Unable to keep up, I stared alternately between the two men in confusion.
Darius then turned to me with a kind smile.
Darius: It’s Nica and Ring’s birthday today.
Kate: It is!?
Darius pulled a cheque out of his pocket and handed it to Nica.
Darius: Here’s your present. It’s what you wanted, right?
Nica: Nice. Thanks, Dari.
(That cheque had an insane number of zeros written on it…)
My gaze reflexively shifted toward the cheque Nica waved in front of my face with a smirk.
They continued their conversation while I stood there frozen in shock.
Darius: Are you having a party this year?
Nica: Hmm, nope. Because it looks like Spatzi is celebrating with me instead.
I looked up in surprise, only to see Nica’s smirk widen.
Darius: I see. Then I shall leave Nica in your care, Miss Fairytale Keeper.
Darius gave me a big smile before turning and walking away.
While I was still standing there dumbfounded, Nica suddenly grabbed my chin and forced me to directly meet his gaze.
That smug grin on his face looked like he was up to something—
Nica: Well then. You keep me company for my birthday, Spatzi.
And just like that, it was decided I’d be dragged around by him until the day was over.
…
Kate: Is it really your birthday today?
Nica: Yeah, pretty much.
(“Pretty much”?)
I tilted my head, unable to comprehend his choice of words,
Nica: If it’s my birthday, that means it’s Ring’s too.
Nica: He’s probably been caught by Dari and thrown into some party by now.
Nica gazed out the window while humming a tune, seemingly in an exceptionally good mood.
(This must be the effect of Dari’s cheque.)
His mood visibly improved ever since receiving that cheque with an absurd number of zeros.
Kate: Do you not want to go to a party, Nica?
Nica: What’s fun about a party full of men?
He stuck his tongue out then scrunched his face as if he ate something bitter.
Nica: It’s more fun being with you.
He scoffed, his expression changing almost instantly.
(That aside, I wonder where we’re headed to…)
I felt slightly uneasy about riding in a carriage with the destination unknown to me, and that emotion must've shown on my face.
Nica’s grin grew wider when he noticed.
Nica: Don’t worry, we’re going somewhere good.
He then flashed me a smile more charming than any of his I’ve ever seen.
…
I had my fingers tightly clenched around the strap of my bag as I took in the dazzling scene before my eyes.
All around me were aristocrats stacking chips and laughing heartily, indulging themselves in gambling.
(Coming to a casino on his birthday is just so in-character of Nica.)
I glanced to my side and saw Nica already approaching a waiter to have his chips prepared.
Nica: What’s with that look? Are you thinking “gambling on your birthday, seriously?”
Kate: I don’t deny that. But I must say, this is very “you”.
Nica: So that’s how you see me. I’m hurt.
He pulled the cheque out of his pocket and showed it to me.
Panicking, I hurriedly tried to hide it.
Nica: What are you doing?
Kate: If people find out you’re carrying around a cheque with that sum written on it, someone might try to steal it.
As I desperately tried to keep the cheque hidden,
Kate: Ah—
Nica raised his hand, holding the cheque out of my reach.
I got anxious and hopped slightly in an attempt to grab it, but Nica simply smirked and waved it above my head.
Nica: Haha, you’re just so adorable, Spatzi.
Kate: Whoa!
He got hold of my outstretched hand and effortlessly spun me around like in a dance.
Kate: Hey, Nica…!
Nica: The lovely little Spatzi looks the cutest when she’s dancing in the palm of my hand.
(Geez!)
Nica looked disappointed when I pulled my hand away, but his facial expression quickly returned to normal.
Nica: You don’t have to worry about that. The amount on this cheque is nothing more than mere pocket change to the people here.
I glanced around the casino and saw that it was as he said, the aristocrats were too absorbed in gambling to pay us any mind.
Nica: Anyway, Spatzi, you’re going to be gambling in my place.
Kate: ME!?
Nica placed the cheque in my hand.
Nica: Alright, today we’re going to more than double this money.
Kate: What if we lose?
Nica: What are you talking about?
Kate: Huh?
He flashed me a wicked smile and declared,
Nica: Losing isn’t an option.
(He’s being serious…)
He pulled me by my arm and seated me at an empty spot.
The table was set up for a game of poker.
Aristocrat With A Load of Chips: What, is this kid my next opponent?
Woman Hiding Her Expression With a Fan: My, my, are you sure you're not at the wrong place?
Five players, including myself, sat around the table. Each of the other players possessed an overwhelming amount of chips.
Irritated Aristocrat: And who’s that man behind the young lady?
Standing behind me, Nica raised both his hands and smiled.
Nica: This girl looks like she’s never played poker. I was worried about her, so I just thought I’d teach her.
The chips that the cheque from Darius were exchanged for were brought to us.
(What… is this all we have!?)
I stared in shock at the ten chips before turning to look at the other players’ stacks.
They all had at least a hundred chips each, and that was when I realised the true meaning of what Nica said to me earlier.
(Our sense of money is worlds apart…)
The game began with me filling up with fear.
With trembling hands, I played the cards I was dealt—.
…
Dealer: A two-pair of Jacks and Aces. Lady Kate wins.
Aristocrat With A Load of Chips:That girl won again!?
I had somehow accumulated an impressive stack of chips in front of me without losing a single round.
(I have no idea what’s going on, but I keep winning…)
Irritated Aristocrat: You’re not cheating, are you!?
Kate: I’m not.
Woman Hiding Her Expression With a Fan: Now, now, ever heard of beginner’s luck?
Everyone cast suspicious looks at Nica, but all he did was stand far enough from the table such that there was no way he interfered with the cards.
Another round started and the dealer handed out new cards.
The five cards I received were utterly worthless.
(I should fold.)
Just as I reached out to choose which cards to exchange,
Kate: !
I felt something tracing letters onto my back, causing me to flinch at the sudden sensation.
It was definitely Nica’s doing.
(Do I listen to him? But that would be cheating.)
(Then again, the cards I have in hand are worthless. There’s no guarantee I’ll win, even if I follow his instructions.)
Dealer: Lady Kate, will you be exchanging any of your cards?
(... This is NOT going to be funny if I lose and end up in debt!)
Kate: I’ll exchange four cards!
Following Nica’s instructions, I exchanged four cards and only kept one.
I nearly let out an audible gasp when I looked down at my new hand of cards, and a soft chuckle from Nica reached my ears.
Aristocrat With A Load of Chips: I can’t keep losing to this girl. I’m going all-in.
Woman Hiding Her Expression With A Fan: I’ll go all-in too.
Everyone looked like they had a strong hand of cards as they pushed all their chips to the center of the table.
Nica: She’s going all-in too.
Nica spoke for me while resting his chin on my shoulder.
Dealer: Then please reveal your cards.
The players revealed their cards, starting with the one who bet the most chips.
A three-of-a-kind with Kings, a two-pair with Queens, a two-pair with Jacks, and a three-of-a-kind with Tens.
And then, it was my turn—
Dealer: A four-of-a-kind with Aces. Lady Kate wins!
Aristocrat With A Load of Chips: Damn it! I can’t believe this!
I sat there dumbfounded as all the chips on the table were now placed right in front of me.
Nica: See? I told you there’s no way you’d lose.
Nica whispered in my ear, as though he had known from the start how the game would turn out.
Irritated Aristocrat: This is cheating! Give me my money back!
Nica: Let’s leave before we get roped into trouble.
After muttering something to the dealer, Nica grabbed my arm and whisked me out of the casino.
…
Nica: Ahh, that was the best. You’re such a lucky star, Spatzi.
(That was a whirlwind of events, but you secretly accepted the bet money, didn't you?)
A little while after we left the casino, the dealer who had been running after us caught up and handed Nica a cheque before heading back.
It appeared to be the cash prize exchanged from the chips we won—
(I might pass out if I see any more large sums like this.)
The cheque Darius gave Nica earlier was already a terrifying amount of money, and the thought of that sum multiplying scared me more than it made me happy.
Nica: We won, all thanks to you. I’ll treat you to something.
Kate: It was originally your money, so you don’t have to.
Nica: But you were the one who worked hard to win. Be right back.
I watched as Nica made his way toward a food wagon, and sat down on a nearby bench.
(Did Nica really not pull any strings?)
He gave me the final instruction in a game where I was winning consecutively by what seemed like beginner’s luck.
(I was the one deciding whether to bet or fold based on the cards I had in hand, but…)
It might not have been my imagination that I felt like I was being controlled to dance in the palm of his hand.
(To be honest, I only doubt Nica because of the way he usually behaves…!)
He was always so carefree and elusive, a perfect example of a pure villain who manipulated the hearts of others.
Every single time we met, I felt like he was toying with me.
Nica: Your facial expressions are changing so fast.
Kate: Wah!
Before I knew it, Nica returned and handed me a pie from a paper bag.
Nica: Here you go.
Kate: Thank you.
He sat down next to me and we started eating pie together.
Our eyes met while I was staring at him.
Nica: What, mesmerised by me?
Kate: Not that. I just didn’t expect you to eat something like this.
Given how he loved expensive food, it was rather surprising to see him eating pie from a food wagon—
Nica: … Ah, I usually don’t. Only when I’m really starving.
Kate: Only if you’re really starving?
Nica: Yeah, or perhaps I just felt like eating something cheap on a day like this.
Even though he was sitting right next to me, his side profile as he stared off into the distance gave of an impression that he wasn't really there.
Kate: It’s getting late, so allow me to celebrate your birthday again tomorrow.
Kate: I’ll be sure to prepare something you like.
Without realising it, I was grabbing onto his sleeve.
Nica noticed and chuckled,
Nica: I don’t need a cake or birthday song. Those don't mean anything to me.
He placed his hand over mine that was still holding his sleeve.
(Sometimes, Nica looks at me with such cold eyes.)
I wanted to know why, and for some reason, I couldn't take my eyes off him.
Nica: Anyway, this area is so lively and bright even at night.
Kate: It’s lively indeed, but it doesn't look that bright to me…
The night view of London stretched out ahead of us, but the brightness felt the same as usual.
(Come to think of it, he did wake up at around evening time today…)
Kate: Are you sensitive to light, Nica?
Nica: I’m just not used to it, especially in the morning.
Nica: It’s way too bright for me.
His profile as he watched the bustling streets looked lonely in some way.
Nica: When your eyes have grown accustomed to the darkness where you can’t see a single ray of hope, the brightness of mornings becomes too harsh to handle.
His hand, resting atop of mine, tightened its grip.
(I wonder why he doesn’t want his birthday to be celebrated.)
Once again, another part of my mind was now occupied by him.
By the time we finished our pies, it was already late into the night.
Nica: Shall we head back?
Standing there was the usual Nica.
…
The next day, I went to see Nica with a bouquet of flowers.
(I decided to get him a present since I couldn't give him anything yesterday…)
He said he didn't want cake, and I didn't know what else he would like apart from cash, so I ended up choosing the safe option of getting him a bouquet.
(Oh…!)
Kate: Nica!
Nica: Morning, Spatzi. You’re in high spirits today too.
I shoved the bouquet into Nica’s arms as he stifled a yawn like he did yesterday.
Nica: Whoa,
Kate: Happy birthday again.
His eyes were opened so wide they looked like they were going to pop out of their sockets.
Kate: “It’s always darkest before the dawn”.
Nica: Huh?
Kate: “Even in the darkest of nights when despair is overwhelming, that time will not last forever, and the morning sun of hope will inevitably shine through”.
Kate: It’s a quote from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and one of my favourite sayings.
I haven't been able to forget the words Nica said last night.
Something told me I just had to share that quote with him.
Kate: No matter what kind of nights you go through, there will be dawn and hope will always shine through the darkness.
Kate: I hope the morning sunshine you see then isn’t blinding, but rather warm and gentle.
Kate: That was embarrassing to say, but…
Even so, I also couldn't forget the loneliness I saw in his profile last night.
Feeling flustered, I shoved the bouquet at him, and he muttered something under his breath.
Nica: … You really are such a kind person.
Kate: Huh?
I felt an impact on my back and before I could realise what happened, I was pressed up against the wall.
The bouquet slipped from my hands and fell.
Nica: Then why don’t you stay by my side and show this “hopeful morning sun” of yours to someone like me, who's trapped in the darkness?
Both my wrists were pinned down by him, his face was mere inches away from mine, and the scent of ylang ylang wafted between us.
Nica: Ah, but the darkness might consume that morning sun first, you know?
Nica: No matter how much I mess with you,
Nica: You can't take your eyes off me, now can you?
I get angry when he teases me, and sigh when he messes with me.
And yet, when he shows me a certain expression from time to time,

Kate: Wow… this tea is delicious! The rich aroma lingers in my mouth with every sip.
William: Word has it that these tea leaves are the best batch ever grown in years.
— It was a quiet morning on a day off with no plans for the day, and I was enjoying the tea William had prepared.
As I relaxed in the peaceful atmosphere, the sound of two pairs of hurried footsteps broke it.
Liam: Kate, since when did you start dating Ring!?
Alfons: You’re so cruel, Miss Kate… was I no more than a one-time fling to you!?
The words spoken by the two men who burst into the dining hall had me completely bewildered.
Kate: I don't remember dating Ring, nor do I remember ever having a fling with Alfons…
William: Fufu, I wonder what amusing misunderstanding could've let to this?
Liam: Ring came all the way here to Crown’s castle and he’s asking to see Kate.
Liam: He said he has some secret business with her that he can’t tell anyone else about.
Alfons: The ever so innocent Ring personally requesting to meet you, and for it to be in regards to some secret business, no less…
Alfons: Isn’t it obvious that the two of you share a very special relationship?
Kate: It’s not… you should tone down your curiosity, Liam.
Kate: And Alfons, please stop making up nonsensical things just because you’re finding this funny.
Alfons: Alriiighttt.
Liam: Okaaay.
The pair, who were always drawn to anything even remotely entertaining, replied in unison.
Finishing my tea, I stood from my seat.
Kate: Thank you for the tea, William.
William: Where to next?
Kate: Considering he came all this way specifically to see me… I should talk to Ring first.
…
Right outside Crown’s castle, I spotted Ring being ambushed by Harrison and Roger.
Kate: Ring, I heard you wanted to see me…
Ring: Oh! You actually came, Robin…!
The moment he saw me, Ring’s eyes lit up like a lost child who had found his parents.
Roger: So… how do you intend to ask the lil’ lady out on a date?
Ring: T-that's not it! I’ve already told you, didn't I? I’m not here to ask Robin out on a date…
Harrison: Doesn’t look like he’s lying.
Roger: Oh? Then what business do you have with her, if not a date? Depending on your answer… we might not let you have Kate.
Roger and Harrison stepped forward and stood protectively between Ring and I…
It looked like they were protecting me, but…!
One glance at their faces made it clear that they were just having fun with the situation.
(First there was Liam and Alfons, and now even these two…?)
(... I guess Ring’s just too good to tease.)
I suddenly felt bad for Ring once I realised how that must have felt.
Ring: I wanted to keep it a secret so the information wouldn’t leak, but… I guess I have no choice but to reveal it now.
Ring: Actually… I came to ask for your help with choosing a birthday present.
Kate: A birthday present?
Ring: Tomorrow is Nica’s birthday. I don’t have a sense for such things and don’t know much about them, so I’m struggling to pick a present.
Ring: I asked for Dari’s help at first, but—
…
Darius: I’m busy, so I can’t help. Why don’t you ask someone from Crown to help you instead?
Darius: That way, you get to find out more about them and pick a present for Nica at the same time. Killing two birds with one stone, right?
…
Ring: … That’s what he said, so I figured I’d ask you for help since you seem to have a good sense for getting gifts.
(“Seem to have good sense”... this is the first time I’m getting this compliment, it feels kind of good to hear.)
Feeling pleased by the compliment, I decided to go with the flow and accept his request.
Kate: Alright. If you’re okay with me helping you, I’d be happy to.
Ring: R-really? You’ll be a huge help…!
Ring’s smile made me think that… if he were a dog, his tail would be wagging like crazy right now.
Kate: It’s just… I’m not exactly an expert on knowing what men like to receive as gifts, so I think it might help to get some opinions from others.
Kate: Harrison, Roger, what would you be happy to receive as a gift?
I decided to ask them right away, since they were just there, but—
Roger: Alcohol. Or something that goes well with it.
Harrison: I’d like something sweet.
Their instant responses were exactly as I expected.
Ring: Food, huh… Nica has refined taste buds, so I’m not sure I can find something that meets his standards…
Kate: Boxing gear would be a good gift for Roger, and a novel for Harrison…
Kate: Don't you think it'd be nice to receive something related to your hobbies?
Roger: Hmm… I already have gear I’m used to, so I don’t really need anyone to buy me more.
Harrison: I wouldn't know how to react if the novel isn’t to my liking or it's one I’ve already read.
Ring: … Choosing from a category the other person is especially familiar with is a double-edged sword.
Kate: You’re right. … It’s troublesome indeed, so shall we ask others for their opinions too? Let’s go, Ring!
Ring: Ah, yeah! I’ll be counting on you.
— And so, we started our search for Nica’s birthday present.
…
Ring and I went around gathering opinions to help us decide on a present for Nica.
William: Something I’d want? Let me think… what do you think I’d want?
Ring: … That’s what we came to ask.
Kate: Off to the next person!
…
Liam: Something I’d want… I don’t really want anything in particular.
Liam: Right now, all I want is the smiles of the audience who come to see my performances!
Ring: As expected of Sparkly Pink… even your words sparkle…!
…
Elbert: I want… the most beautiful thing in this world.
Ring: That’s hard. We’d have to compare every single thing in the world to find out what the most beautiful thing is…
Alfons: I want to spend a sweeeeet, passionate night with Miss Kate.
Ring: Y-you can’t!
Alfons: Why do you get to decide? This is between me and Miss Kate.
Alfons: Ahh, could it be that you've already reserved a night with her yourself?
Ring: Wha—!? A-absolutely NOT. Don’t say anything weird!!
Kate: Please don't poke fun at Ring, Alfons. Let’s move on!
…
Jude: … Somethin’ I want? “Money” or “submissive labour”.
Ellis: I don’t want anything. But if I had to choose… I suppose I’d want something that would make you happy.
…
Victor: Something I’d want for my birthday…? Don’t tell me, are you planning for my birthday celebration next year!?
Victor: First of all, I want everyone from Crown and Vogel to sing me a birthday song. And then—
…
After gathering opinions from everyone in Crown… Ring and I headed off to buy a present.
Kate: Hmm… some of their opinions were helpful, whereas some… not quite.
Ring: … Maybe I should just give him cash instead.
Ring: That might be better than ending up picking something weird and disappointing Nica…
Kate: You can’t let Jude influence you! The process of choosing the present is important too, you know?
Ring: Is that how it works…?
Kate: Absolutely! In that case, let’s change our approach.
Kate: Instead of thinking about what Nica wants, let’s think about what you want to give him.
Ring: What I want to give him…?
Kate: For example, we could consider getting him something he can use at work or help him relax…
Kate: Try imagining how Nica would use a present you give him. That might give you some ideas.
Ring: I…
Ring’s eyes, usually bright like the reflection of the clear blue sky on a water’s surface, suddenly darkened as though a drop of ink had fallen into them.
He seemed to be lost in his memories of the past, and for a moment, I thought I saw my image disappear from his eyes.
It felt like he had wandered off somewhere far away, leaving me feeling uneasy all of a sudden.
Ring: I… want to give Nica a present that will make him smile again.
Kate: Make him smile again…?
(From what I’ve seen, Nica always seems to be smiling…)
(... What does Ring mean by “again”?)
I wasn't very familiar with anything that had happened to the two.
But… I could tell that Ring’s words came from his heart.
(A present that will make Nica smile… I wonder what that could be.)
Ring: At this point, I should just buy this.
With a look of exasperation on his face, Ring picked up a book titled “100 Jokes Guaranteed To Have Everyone Rolling With Laughter!”
A mental image of Nica cracking one of those witty jokes flashed through my mind and vanished as quickly as a shooting star.
Kate: L-let’s give it another thought! We still have plenty of time!
Ring: But…
Kate: I’ll help you search for a present you’re satisfied with! Don’t give up!
Ring: … Thanks, Robin. You’re very kind.
Just as we started walking toward another store, something caught my eye.
Kate: What do you think of this, Ring?
…
While searching for a present with Ring, my eyes landed on an advertisement for a “coffee cup painting experience”.
Since the members of Vogel lived in the palace, they most likely didn’t have much personal tableware… which made a personalised coffee cup a practical gift.
Moreover, I was sure Nica would be pleased to receive a one-of-a-kind coffee cup hand painted by Ring himself.
Ring: … They said they can process it quickly at the shop, so it’ll be ready for pick up tomorrow at noon.
Kate: I can’t wait to give it to Nica.
Ring: Yeah.
Ring and I left the store chatting after painting the coffee cup.
Just then, my vision turned orange.
Kate: Huh? Are these…
Ring: They’re osmanthus flowers.
Kate: But osmanthus flowers usually only bloom in autumn, right? Wouldn't that make this an off-season bloom?
Ring: … Or it might be a specially cultivated variety that blooms in all four seasons.
Kate: A specially cultivated variety…?
Ring: I'm not too sure of the details… but there’s a technique where different plants are crossbred to create new varieties with specific characteristics.
Ring: For example, some flowers are cultivated to have more vibrant colours, larger flowers… or a stronger resistance to disease.
Kate: Wow…! I never knew such techniques existed!
Listening to Ring’s explanation, I looked up at the osmanthus tree again.
Kate: I don't know if that was how this tree was created, but…
Kate: … If it was, then it means this tree was grown¹ carrying the hopes of the people who cultivated it.
¹ The word originally used here was “born”. But trees don't give birth… now do they?
I was so captivated by the sweet scent of osmanthus flowers and the sight of delicate orange petals fluttering down that I didn't notice—
Ring: “Born carrying hopes”... huh.
Ring: I, too,—
Ring muttered something while looking pained, but I didn't catch what he said.
Kate: … Ah, sorry, Ring! I got too distracted admiring the flowers.
Ring: No, it’s fine. Such seasonal anomalies are a rare sight and the flowers smell nice, so I understand why you stopped to appreciate them.
While Ring was talking, a strong gust of wind blew and sent a rain of osmanthus flowers coming down on us.
Ring: This is incredible. They just keep falling…
Kate: You’re right. It’s almost like a flower shower.
Ring: Flower shower…? That sounds interesting. Is it some sort of ritual where you bathe in flowers?
Kate: During a wedding ceremony, people scatter flower petals over the bride and groom as a way to give the newlyweds their blessings.
Ring: W-wedding…? B-b-bride and groom…!?
Ring: D-does that mean… standing in this rain of flower petals right now… we look like we’re getting married…!?
Kate: Huh? No, that’s not what I…
Ring: Unacceptable!
Ring panicked and hurriedly removed his jacket to hold over his head like a makeshift shelter from the “rain”, before pulling me closer to his side under it, holding me by the waist.
Ring: … Thank goodness. We’re safe now.
My nose was filled with the smell of the osmanthus flowers mixed with Ring’s deep woody scent.
My heart was hammering against my chest, and the warmth due to our lack of physical distance made me all the more nervous, but—
More than that, there was something else on my mind.
Kate: Umm… I’m sorry, Ring.
Ring: What for?
Kate: I didn’t realize you’d hate the idea so much… I shouldn't have compared this to a flower shower.
Ring: … No, it’s not you that I hate.
Ring: One day, we might become enemies, and as a member of Vogel, I can’t get too close to you…
Ring: That aside, you’re kind and an overall good person.
Ring: When Harrison and Roger had me surrounded in front of the castle today, it made me happy to hear you calling out to me from afar.
Ring: There’s nothing in it for you, and yet you sincerely helped me to pick a present for Nica.
Ring: You also stopped me when I was about to give up and buy something weird… all of it makes me happy.
Ring: If you were my fiancée, I feel like we’d make a wonderful family… I can easily picture it.
Kate: …
I could feel my face heating up at the praise I had never heard before.
Ring: That’s exactly why… it just feels wrong for someone like me to be seen as your fiancé.
Ring: So just bear with it a little longer, until the petals stop falling.
(“Someone like me”...)
Those words made the warmth I felt from being complimented fade away almost instantly.
I think Ring’s a wonderful person…
The way he spoke so lowly of himself was heartbreaking to witness.
Kate: You’re a wonderful person too, Ring. No matter what anyone says, I know you are.
I looked up at him, genuinely wanting him to hear the words coming from the bottom of my heart.
Kate: You’re wary of Crown because we might one day become Vogel’s enemy.
Kate: Despite that… you went all the way to Crown’s castle just to seek help with picking out a birthday present.
Kate: You wanted to find something special for Nica, even if it meant putting your suspicions aside. I think that’s wonderful.
Ring: …
Kate: Someone who cherishes the family he has now will surely… cherish the family they create in the future too.
Kate: So there’s nothing bad or strange about you being my fiancé at all…!
Ring: Um.
Kate: Ah.
Kate: Uhh… sorry. I was just babbling away…!
Ring: I-I see…
An awkward moment of silence fell between us as we stared at each other, unable to say another word.
Ring: Robin…
Right as Ring was about to say something, the wind suddenly stopped.
Ring: … G-good. The rain of petals is over.
Ring put his jacket back on and stepped away from me.
His warmth was now gone, and somehow I felt a little lonely.
…
Our day of picking out a present smoothly came to an end…
The next morning, I went to visit Ring at the palace.
Ring: Did you need something from me…? Did you perhaps forget to tell me something yesterday—...
Kate: Nope, I didn't forget anything. I came to tell you something I can only say today.
Ring: …?
Kate: Happy birthday, Ring!
I held out a small package to him.
Ring: Huh…? Wha—...!?
Kate: Since it’s Nica’s birthday today and you two are twins, I figured it must be your birthday too… am I wrong?
Ring: You’re not… but I didn't expect to receive a present from you.
Ring: Th…tha…thanks… Can I open it now?
Kate: Go ahead! … But it’s nothing fancy, so please don’t expect too much.
Ring opened the package to reveal a small glass jar filled with colourful candies.
Ring: Wow…! The jar is beautiful, and the candies sparkle like jewels…
Ring: It’s fun to look at, like looking at treasure.
He lifted the jar up to the sunlight, admiring the way the candies sparkled.
Kate: Fufu… I’m glad you like it. I picked it out while thinking of you.
Ring: Thinking of me…?
Kate: You told me yesterday that you had no sense for gifts and didn’t know enough about them to pick a good one, right?
Ring: Oh, yeah… I did say that.
Kate: I think that’s how everyone starts out.
Kate: Just like filling a glass jar with your favourite candies, you gain new experiences and gather things you love little by little every day…
Kate: That’s how you develop your sense for things and learn more about the world.
Kate: So… I hope the days you spend in England will be like this jar, filling up with things you love.
As I spoke, Ring took another look at the jar, taking in the sight of the colourful candies inside.
Ring: I don’t know if that’s how my days will turn out. But…
Ring: At the very least… they did turn out like that yesterday and today, all thanks to you.
Ring took out two pieces of candy, one the same warm orange colour of osmanthus flowers and one a soft lavender colour like the ribbon I was wearing today.
He placed the orange candy in my palm.
Ring: … Thank you for celebrating my birthday.
Ring: If you don’t mind… can we eat these candies together?
Kate: Thank you! I’d love to.
The sweet candy melted on my tongue, and at the same time, Ring’s gentle smile filled my heart…
It felt like a tiny piece of jewel-like candy was just added to the jar in my heart.
"I want to return the favour, so if it's not too much of a hassle, umm... could you tell me your birthday?"

“Subjects 404 and 405.” A clinical, dispassionate voice called out as a wide room materialized around me. Tight restraints kept my arms and legs secured to the seat I was forced to lay down on. I flexed my wrists, trying to find a way out of them despite knowing that the people who put me here wouldn’t give me such a kindness. The room smelled like chemicals and dust and iron. My heart thudded in my chest and my breathing became shallow. Sweat beaded on my brow and neck despite the chill in the air.
Something isn’t right. Why do I keep coming back here?
We left. I know we did. Dari came and we–
“Leave him alone!”
Nica’s voice. Somewhere. It sounds warped and far away, like hearing him yell through water. I know he’s here somewhere but why can’t I see him? Why can I never see him when I come back here?
“Nica? Nica, where are you? I’m scared…” My voice left my mouth– frail and wet. Younger. When I blink, my eyelashes are wet and cold.
Expressionless faces that I know all too well and yet can’t quite remember fully begin to draw closer, their owners wearing sterile white coats. One of them holds a long syringe filled with an eerie cyan liquid. I pulled with everything I had against my restraints, eyes fixed on the needle. My breathing came out in shallow, harsh pants now.
“Nein,” I tried to yank my torso and my neck further away from the approaching drug but there was no use. Two sets of sturdy hands pressed down on me while the needle touched the skin of my neck. “Fass mich nicht an. Es tut weh.”
As soon as the needle broke my skin, I felt the liquid being plunged into my body. It stung like thousands of tiny glass shards all at once, a searing heat followed by icy numbness spreading from my neck outward. It hurts. It hurts. Why do they keep doing this to us? Why me and my brother? Why did we have to be here? I miss the sun. I miss the wind and clouds in the sky. There was never anything here but prodding and scraping and needles and new drugs. Why wasn’t Dari here yet?
“Ring?” Your voice– gentle and sweet, sounded out to me in the midst of the dark and terrifying. You weren’t supposed to be here. You’d get hurt, you’d be-
“Ring, wake up,” Your touch, soft but insistent as you shook my shoulder pulled me from the inky black cold of my memories. My eyes shot open to see you, your brow upturned, stitched together in worry as you looked down at me. Your name escaped my lips as I reached out to touch you, my fingers hesitating before grazing your jawline. You were here. You were warm and real. A shaky breath of relief left my chest as I slumped back against the mattress, feeling heavier than I had before. Another nightmare.
“You were restless and talking in your sleep. It looked like you were having a nightmare. Are you alright?”
“Ah,” I inhaled deeply, my eyes scanning the ceiling of your room. The more I saw, the more I felt at ease. I wasn’t strapped down in that horrible lab, waiting for the next cut, the next needle. My skin wasn’t yielding to medical blades and syringes for the sake of experimentation. I was here. I was home. I looked at you again, studying the contours of your face. The shine in your eyes, the shape of your lips, strands of your hair, mussed by sleep. “Better now. Much better. Thank you.”
I brushed my knuckles against the soft skin of your cheek. You leaned into the touch and I felt my heart melt a little– the warmth chasing off the cold bite of the nightmare.
“Do you want to talk about it?” You offered slowly, your eyes darting over my face.
“Maybe in the morning…it’s too much right now.”
You nodded in understanding, moving an errant strand of my hair from my face. I noticed it was damp with sweat.
“I didn’t mean to worry you, Schatz.” I felt my brow furrow. “...I’m sorry.”
Your hand gently wrapped around mine as you turned your face to place a kiss on my finger with a smile that was far too kind. “You can’t control it. There’s nothing to apologize for, Dearest.”
I allow myself to sigh in relief, some of the tension in my shoulders easing. You pressed your forehead to mine and I closed my eyes, savoring your closeness.
“You’re too good to me,” I whispered. How many times would you be there to pull me from the depths? You shouldn’t have to do it at all. I was supposed to be stronger than this. If I can’t even fight off what’s in my own head then-
“Shhh,” you wrapped your arm around my head and held me close to your chest. “None of that now. You deserve to be treated with kindness, Ring.” I wrap my arms around your torso, letting out a shuddering breath as I nuzzle my face into your chest. The scent of your soap filled my nose.
My eyelids began to feel heavy again. A faint worry of repeating the nightmare echoed in my mind but it felt dulled, your warmth around me acting as a shield against the cold and the dreaded. I felt safe. Guarded. It feels welcome and also strange, after spending so long either helpless or guarding others. I feel your lips press a kiss to my hair and my face warms.
Your fingers stroked lazily through my hair, a slow, soothing rhythm that lulled me further into the warmth of your embrace. My body, still tense from the ghosts of my dreams, finally began to yield, my breaths evening out, my grip on you loosening but not letting go entirely.
"Sleep," you murmured, your voice a quiet promise against my temple. "I've got you."
And for the first time in a long time, I believed it.
