I was going to make gifs but got sidetracked because I forgot about this scene and these kids are literally insane about each other and they've only just met

"I can't leave you"?????????? This poor boy only learned what Jedi were like 20 minutes ago and already he wants to throw himself into harm's way for her. Also again it's important to note that while Devon has an actual weapon with which to defend Rylee he still keeps trying to return the favor long before he finally gets a blaster. His self-preservation instinct completely flies out the window the minute she's in danger

She also has no self-preservation instinct when he's in danger

Then after Rylee does get a blaster he turns into a sharpshooter while trying to protect Devon (it's definitely getting set to kill mode by the end of season 2 because of some situation where he likely can't protect her with stun only)

Anyone calling this kid useless can sit down. This isn't "girlboss protects dumb boy" it's both of them constantly trying to protect each other and I think we've only scratched the surface of how unhinged they're going to be later on. Also for the people saying Devon doesn't care about Rylee anymore at the end because she's too angry and she doesn't comfort him while he's crying - psychology is a complex thing and anger/hatred towards one person/group of people can and often do coexist with empathy towards another person/group of people in the same person at the same time. Oftentimes they coexist because the person is angry at the person/group of people who hurt the person they empathize with (which seems to be the case with Devon - the Empire hurt Rylee too so she's angry on his behalf as much as she is for her own sake). She doesn't need to hug Rylee or show a stereotypical display of comfort or affection to care about him. The brief look they share at the end is enough and honestly the subtlety of the nonverbal storytelling here is FAR more powerful than if she did hug him

I've seen people speculating like "okay what if we see Ventress and Lyco again" "Lyco will probably try flirting with Devon and there might be a teen love triangle arc" no no no let me do you one better. Here's my pitch:

The Year on the Run 2: Trauma Buddies Boogaloo Trio have to set aside their differences and team up with Ventress and Lyco for a common mission. Lyco does, in fact, take an immediate liking to the cool new Twi'lek girl in spite of (or more likely because of) the fact that she's dabbling in the Dark Side and kind of scary. But Devon is having NONE of it and keeps rebuffing him. She thinks he's annoying. Despite Ventress spending the whole arc telling Lyco to drop it, the girl clearly isn't interested, he does the exact opposite and keeps bothering her with horrible attempts to make conversation. "So is that Rylee guy your boyfriend" "Why do YOU care" etc.

Rylee, however, is happy to meet another kid his age because he's lonely and misses having friends. So he and Lyco actually hit it off. Which then makes Devon mad because "why are you talking to him he's a nuisance" "he's not so bad" "UGH BOYS" but really it turns out that she's the one now on the verge of a jealous rampage because exCUSE ME THAT'S MY NEW FRIEND NOT YOURS and also she's just extremely overprotective and completely unaware that hmmm maybe this obsessive streak means that she has Feelings™. That's totally not what's happening here. Also this Lyco kid is insane and teaching Rylee how to make bombs or something now. He could die!!!!!!!!! How DARE this moron put Rylee in danger!!!!!!!!! She starts getting snippy with Rylee because of this and he's totally helpless because "I thought we were good why is she mad at me???? I DON'T UNDERSTAND GIRLS" but now she doesn't want to talk to him

Meanwhile Lyco is still annoyingly trying to flirt with her, she refuses to let Ventress play mom for a bit and have a girl talk about the situation (she suspects the Feelings™ because nothing about this girl's behavior pattern is subtle), and Maul is completely out of his depth and losing his mind because they have an anti-Imperial mission to complete WHY ARE THESE CHILDREN NOT FOCUSING!!!!! No amount of scary Ex-Sith Dad shenanigans are enough to knock sense into any of them. Ventress has a slightly better grasp of adolescent psychology and tries to tell him to cool it, they'll get over themselves eventually, but he refuses to accept this and keeps getting more frustrated. Now Devon is mad at him too and has decided to give him the silent treatment

Eventually this escalates to the point where all three of the kids are in a full-on irrational Amazon Prime Video Original Series high school drama disaster zone where Devon is feeling absolutely betrayed that Rylee's New Best Friend is her Sworn Archnemesis as of 48 Hours Ago™, Lyco still isn't discouraged and is now asking Rylee for advice on how to ask her out, and Rylee is trying not to have a mental breakdown over being stuck in the middle of a chaotic friendship triangle he didn't ask for and also having an emotional crisis over the fact that he doesn't actually want to help his new friend ask Devon out but it's not because he has a crush on her or anything, and the dynamic is just this

The only character who emerges from this crossover inexplicably unscathed is Two-Boots

As a former unhinged teenage girl myself, the more I think about it the more I'm realizing that Devon might be one of the most accurate portrayals of unhinged teenage girl logic I've ever seen

*Meets some random kid she's not sure about

*2 hours later he is somehow her entire personality complete with not one but TWO "no DAD I am not leaving him behind just because you want me to" crashouts. Has decided to adopt a HE ASKED FOR NO PICKLES mentality, is ride or die for him actually, and would probably literally die for him even though that's way too dramatic of a sentiment for this time frame. Also there is reckless driving

okay this will NEVER happen but ive been seeing so much mediocre-to-shitty girldad maul content and it’s been on my mind… but ngl id really appreciate at least an implication/reference to devon menstruating in the next season of m:sl. i feel like a lot of the sw writers are probably terrified of acknowledging that periods are a thing that exists, but there is a theme of this show in dealing with pain and how it affects people so i think it could be appropriate.

novel pronunciations: a maul: shadow lord mini-comic

based on a true story of my dad (a brazilian man) asking a fellow volunteer at church for a "lid" (though he pronounced it with the long e [ee] sound instead of the short i [ih]). the guy was confused but he understood him after he pointed at the object. while my dad was retelling me and my mom about this vignette, i came up with little story! this was made in good fun and i asked my papai if i could share this (he obliged ofc) anyway viva brasil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷!!!!
