Concrete handles heavy downward pressure well, but it is much less effective when a structure is pulled, stretched, or shifted. Rebar fills that gap by adding tensile strength inside the concrete, helping foundations, walls, slabs, footings, and other structural elements resist cracking and movement. The amount and placement of reinforcing steel can vary widely depending on the job. Smaller residential projects may use relatively simple reinforcement, while larger structures require carefully engineered layouts based on expected loads and structural drawings.
