Hi all!

I'm Florence; I make interactive fiction, poetry games, and other miscellaneous bits of writing. If there is a more widespread audience for my work, I reckon there's good odds it's on tumblr. So here I am! (Not for the first time - I've been using this hellsite since I was like 14, but we're not gonna talk about that.)

Over the next couple weeks, I'll make some posts about my various little projects. I'm pretty proud of them, I think they're pretty neat, maybe you will too? Let's see how this goes!

The internet has removed all barriers between any given person and the formal economy, giving us the ability to enter the market without even leaving our homes. Someone who has written a novel can (theoretically) begin selling it more or less immediately. This means that there is an opportunity pressure that has never existed before. If you are giving your art away for free, you are — to a far greater extent than ever — actively choosing to not try to make money off of it. Participating in the formal economy has become, if anything, the default mindset towards making art that the internet pushes on us — the assumption that we are here to make money is built into the structure of the platforms we live within. A cursory search will reveal entire ecosystems of people discussing tricks and strategies to play off the various online systems that exist in order to make money off of any kind of art imaginable.

I just love that this very video is an accumulation of thousands of years worth of art made by people who have never met each other. The concept of this video was so completely unfathomable to every single artist who made the sculptures and yet they’ve all put something toward the creation of it.

At some point you realise: the things that were supposed to work do not. You were told how it works, when you were young, and you believed what you were told. You look around and see people who have gone on believing it. Maybe, for some of them, it is true. The feeling catches you, sometimes - the weight of it all, the sheer unreality. You spend a lot of time ignoring it, running from it, beating it out of your mind. Today, though, it is here. It is in the room. I feel it too. Take my hand, and together we will listen to what it has to say. I am talking about glitches.

I went and gave a talk at the Queer Data Showcase and then I came home and put the talk on Patreon and now if you're giving me money every month you can read it! Neat!

I don't think Tolkien is a good fantasy writer because he scored the highest at some objective Best Fantasy Book Test that every fantasy writer has to take, I think he's a good fantasy writer because he created a world based on things that he was interested in. I feel like a lot of fantasy writers think that they need to create a whole language for their world because Tolkien did and obviously his books are the best so they have to emulate him, but Tolkien did that because he was a linguistics nerd. I think the lesson to be learned from him is not that you have to include elves and deep history and new languages, but that you have to write endlessly about the things you are a huge nerd about and use those things to create your fantasy world
