the spell that killed Springbok was literally “I wish you would just shut up” in the midst of an argument. The shard of broken ceramic she was holding took that as an instruction. As I’ve mentioned here, my animus worldbuilding dictates that some magic follows emotions rather than precise instructions - Fennec didn’t want to kill Springbok, but she was angry at him, questioning their friendship, and desperately wanted him to be quiet. So her magic made that happen!

Astral didn’t really have a sect, she wasn’t part of the Tri-Moon Acolytes. The reason she survived the Seer/Mindreader Massacre is cuz 1) she wasn’t in town when most of it happened and 2) it’s a bit harder to spot her teardrop scales against her white ones
