Museum Deep Dive 1: Snakes
Hey everyone! I’m an artist and historian who enjoys digging deep into the digital collections of museums. I do this fairly often, and a lot of the time I’m not really doing anything with what I find. Pair that with wanting to connect with others on topics I’m knowledgeable about, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for this post.
What exactly am I doing here? Well, I’m here to share historical art based on a unifying concept or theme. For today’s post, I’m going to be sharing art that features or otherwise includes snakes. I’ll be focusing on the Smithsonian’s open access collection for now, but I hope to include more museums in future posts.
This fun little sketch is actually an earring design from 1940 with no artist listed. It’s also marked under the catalogue status as “research in progress”, which is super cool. Who knows? Maybe there will be more information on it in the near future!
I might be cheating a little with this drawing as these are technically dragons, but I just couldn’t leave them out! This piece is from sometime between 1560 and 1600. I’m personally really fond of the faces the artist gave them.
Last but certainly not least, we have an embroidery from the mid 17th century! It’s made of silk and metal embroidery, and I can’t imagine how much time it took. I know this post is about snakes, but the other animals are here are equally as captivating.
Do you have a favorite? Know something about the movement or time period any of the pieces that I didn’t mention? I tried to keep things brief, but I’d love to get deeper into things in the comments!
Wow it's been a while
I've really neglected my tumblr for a while, but I'm hoping to come back now. I've been doing a lot of blogging on my website and substack, and I'll definitely be sharing some of it here!
the artist's job is to communicate the noncommunicable
one of my teachers told me that but i had forgotten. like anything i've forgotten only to find again somewhere unexpected, it made me think. mostly about how perfectionism affects how i make art and. something clicked for the first time.?
there's no perfection. i cannot and will not reach perfection, my work will never be perfect and so i'm asking myself like. what's the point right? what's the point
but- hear me out for a minute okay- what if the point is to make it anyway? to look at perfection, to know it is impossible to achieve and to make it anyway? to attempt to communicate something that happened only once and will never happen again?
that's the point, i think. to try. that's the point.
Goat Appreciation Post
pansy power!!!!
mom went to therapy to grieve the loss of her daughter but it turns out i just tucked her away inside my chest and folded my ribs around her small body, skinny little arms. do you think she died? no, no- shes right here. i carry her with me every day.
i just think i could benefit from a healthier transgender life actually. no more talking pain and suffering and death all the time. lets talk about what being comfortable with who you are brings instead. catharsis is healthy but so is having fun and healing and remembering and being lightness etc etc i could go on and on but for brevity's sake being transgender saved my life!!!! if i did not accept that part of myself i would not be here anymore. here i am!!! it was hard!! here i am!!!
and i love my gender because "i asked god to send me a swordsman and he said look at your hands" etc etc look this is not the post for heroics or half remembered quotes whose author name i will later find and paste here: (Melissa Broder) but what it is about is gender euphoria. don't let anyone tell you being transgender is the end of your life, to me it felt like the beginning, like i'd freaking woke up for the first time and noticed how sunbeams fell through the open window, cool fresh air. a beautiful new day just beginning to bloom before my very eyes.
In addition to the five Ice Cream Demons, we are adding two bonus goats!
The weather was gorgeous outside today, so we took a stroll through the park with this colorful demon and took some glamorous shots in the sunshine and petals. 🌸
The two extra demons will be $800 each plush shipping to summon and will go up at the same time tomorrow (3/31) as the ice creams at 5 pm pst! ✨

🥹 they’re delightful
the markings should end up kind of streaky and a little more brown, but who knows how it’ll actually look once it’s glazed
so today i learned that there’s a piece of graffiti written on the wall of a brothel in Pompeii that reads, “Weep, you girls. My penis has given you up. Now it penetrates men’s behinds. Goodbye, wondrous femininity!”
this lead me down a rabbit hole of Pompeii graffiti, in which i found the following:
From Herculaneum (a bar/inn joined to the maritime baths): "Two friends were here. While they were, they had bad service in every way from a guy named Epaphroditus. They threw him out and spent 105 and half sestertii most agreeably on whores."
From just outside the Vesuvius gate: "Defecator, may everything turn out okay so that you can leave this place."
From the peristyle of the Tavern of Verecundus: "Restitutus says: 'Restituta, take off your tunic, please, and show us your hairy privates.'"
From Herculaneum (a bar/inn joined to the maritime baths): "Apelles the chamberlain with Dexter, a slave of Caesar, ate here most agreeably and had a screw at the same time."
From the basilica: "O walls, you have held up so much tedious graffiti that I am amazed that you have not already collapsed in ruin."
that lead me down a rabbit hole of obscene ancient Roman graffiti such as the following:
Floronius, privileged soldier of the 7th legion, was here. The women did not know of his presence. Only six women came to know, too few for such a stallion.
Chie, I hope your hemorrhoids rub together so much that they hurt worse than when they ever have before!
Theophilus, don’t perform oral sex on girls against the city wall like a dog
Apollinaris, the doctor of the emperor Titus, defecated well here
Restituta, take off your tunic, please, and show us your hairy privates
I was fucking with the bartender
Secundus likes to screw boys
Phileros is a eunuch!
Cruel Lalagus, why do you not love me?
I made bread on April 19th
Gaius Sabinus says a fond hello to Statius. Traveler, you eat bread in Pompeii but you go to Nuceria to drink. At Nuceria, the drinking is better
Anyone who wants to defecate in this place is advised to move along. If you act contrary to this warning, you will have to pay a penalty. Children must pay [number missing] silver coins. Slaves will be beaten on their behinds.
Epaphra doesn’t play football well
You can ride your maid whenever you want. It’s your right
Pyrrhus to his colleague Chius: I grieve because I hear you have died; and so farewell
O walls, you have held up so much tedious graffiti that I am amazed that you have not already collapsed in ruin
My lusty son, with how many women have you had sexual relations?
If anyone sits here, let him read this first of all: if anyone wants a screw, he should look for Attice; she costs 4 sestertii.
Samius to Cornelius: go hang yourself!
If anyone does not believe in Venus, they should gaze at my girl friend
To the one defecating here. Beware of the curse. If you look down on this curse, may you have an angry Jupiter for an enemy
We have wet the bed, host. I confess we have done wrong. If you want to know why, there was no chamber pot
What a lot of tricks you use to deceive, innkeeper. You sell water but drink unmixed wine
The finance officer of the emperor Nero says the food here is poison
Gaius was here – the oldest graffiti, dated 78 BCE; found in Pompeii.
Vote for Isidorus for aedile, he licks cunts the best
i fucking love human beings.
grasshopper nymphs make me want to cry. baby you are so small?
you're so small and also you're little?
